J. Neal Schulman died!
« Reply #5319 on: August 12, 2019, 11:38:36 AM »
From mutual friend Ralph Fucetola I heard that Neal/Neil died over the weekend.  He had lost his house in Pahrump, was staying at someone's in the mountains, and had multiple health problems, but his death still seemed sudden.  It was from multiple organ failure.

Neal recently completed a manuscript for another novel, The Fractal Man, which Ralph has an electronic copy of.

I hadn't realized The Fractal Man was already in print, having known about it only via Ralph.  I didn't communicate often with Neal directly, but am in close touch with Ralph.

You'll notice in the subject line I use Neal's previous spelling of his middle name.  That's how it is on the cover of my copy of Alongside Night.  I forgot the reason he said he changed it, but I always thought he wanted to foster confusion with L. Neill Smith.

I should have added these in my above post, since they're on his YouTube channel.

I really liked her on Mythbusters when she replaced Kari for part of a season.

I'm not usually one to speak ill of the (finally) dead, but in this case I'll make an exception and say it should've happened decades ago.

Semi-hot actress Carol Lynley died on September 3, 2019.  I say 'semi' because she wasn't a Marilyn Monroe, a Jane Russell or a Jayne Mansfield, but she definitely held her own when it came down to the good looks department.  You might remember her from Kolchak: The Night Stalker or from the movie The Poseidon Adventure.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Lynley

A late friend of mine, an OU grad and newspaper man in Oklahoma City, had some amazing stories about Pickens.  The bottom line was T Boone knew what he wanted, and was more than willing to pay to get it.
Yeah friend who is an attorney at a certain oil company met him once and said he seemed "a bit slimy." I retorted "you mean an Oklahoma oil man turned corporate raider seems slimy, even to a lawyer" and he laughed.

Personally I had a conspiracy theory about him. That his wind farms and horse-protection stuff (pet charity of his former wife) was REALLY a land grab to get control of the aquifer. And/or gas reserves but I think water, considering where his buying was and the prices at the time for gas. Who knows.

A colorful character and I enjoyed his antics vis-a-vis GULF and various campaigns for "shareholder value." And I miss the days of "Big Oil" Men, rags to riches (and sometimes vice-versa) and their wild plans versus the large, sober, methodological, corporate ways of today- even if that is more efficient and does deliver "shareholder value!" And he did give away a lot of $ for various causes and schools.
