he did a bangin' job singing these sitcom themes.

Hells, yeah! I know him mostly as the guy wrote and sang the Different Strokes theme song.  :D

Good, no more of those terrible radio commercials about reverse mortgages and life insurance.

Senator Glenn's body will lie in state in the rotunda of the Ohio Statehouse this Friday, 16 Dec.  Weather and time permitting, I hope to go to pay my respects.

I hope you made it, Duke. Today, I came across this video of Friendship 7 where the voice recording and motion cameras were recently synched, so we can see John Glenn's reentry as it happened. For those that don't know the history, the ground telemetry on John Glenn's mission had picked up a signal that implied his capsule's heat-shield was loose. As a long shot to saving his life the ground orders him to leave the retro rocket pack attached through reentry into the atmosphere as the attachments for these rockets might hold the heat-shield in place long enough to make it back. When they ordered this, he well knew he was possibly at death's door, but maintained such composure that the casual observer would knot have known there was a major problem. As it turns out the sensor was faulty, but nobody knew this for sure.

Whenever we get into a potentially deadly situation here is a role model of cool and calm to remember:
John Herschel Glenn Jr. (July 18, 1921 â€" December 8, 2016)

Ha!  I hate to admit it, but that was one of my thoughts, too.  His manner of speaking bugged me.  It sounded forced and pretentious.  I'd post it under "Things that annoy you" if he was still alive. ;)

Wow, thanks for posting. You know I was thinking why, it seems at least, that more and more people (still not a large segment of course) are believing crap like "we never went to the moon" etc conspiracies. And I'm wondering if kids growing up with really high-tech stuff as a matter of course and many (many are serving admireably but there is a disconnect) not serving or seeing wars, privation, etc. The tech-angle makes the old footage and equipment seem like some "made up" old sci-fi movie. Not to pull a Norry but it is amazing what was accomplished with such stuff and the bravery and character of these guys.

Hope Uncle made it to the viewing also.

This show was before my time but I did grow up with Commander Tom watching WKBW channel 7 (ABC). It was also the home of a great anchorman named Irv Weinstein. Both of them retired in the late 1990s but they are still alive, although Irv is on the way out. Apparently Irv's son is or was a co-owner of Ameoba.

I wasn't announcing any of their deaths. The John Glenn posts just reminded me of this show.  ;)

I know, I am just saying that I grew up with WKBW and they had produced some good stuff. Their most notable alumni are literally in the end stages of life. Apparently in 1992 they tried to revive Rocketship 7 via merging of Commander Tom which was recently cancelled after a couple of decades.

Yeah Commander Tom was my era too though my dad kinda looked like Dave Thomas back then.

P.S. I think you're from Ontario, right? Did you ever see that show back in the 80s that they showed on some multicultural channel where it was the security guard taking over the station at night on the weekends?

Yes I am in Southern Ontario, but the show is not ringing a bell right now... But sounds like the station may have been channel 47 cable 4 (CFMT). I could be wrong and it's possible that it could have been CityTV as well. Both are defunct and have since been rebranded, since that happened their histories have become flexible and their archives have been yanked when they used to be very accessible. All pride has been flushed down the fucking shitter. FUCK YOU ROGERS!!!!

This org is sometimes handy, they have a contact form:
http://www.retrontario.com

If you browse their site or maybe their YouTube channel (an excellent channel) you may find some info about that show. Or send them an email and I bet they respond quick and can give you a title or point you to one of their video clips. I have found some amazing nostalgic and forgotten stuff from the Western NY and Golden Horseshoe markets thanks to them.

They compile old 70s and 80s TV stuff produced or broadcasted in the Buffalo-Toronto radius. They rip stuff from VHS and Beta tapes, everything from call signs, jingles, promos, PR clips for shows, whatever. Old commercials for Darien Lake, Fantasy Island, Crystal Beach, and Canada's Wonderland before the park became full of dindus. They have a ton of stuff from stations like WIVB, WGRZ, WNED, CityTV, CFMT, and WUTV before Fox entered. It's very impressive.

Unfortunately, my daughter's business trip took a day longer than planned so I was on grandpa duty through Friday.  Disappointed I didn't get to go, but apparently Senator Glenn was honored by a good number of citizens who braved the cold to pay their respects.

CINCINNATI (AP) â€" The surgeon who created the life-saving Heimlich maneuver for choking victims died early Saturday in Cincinnati. Dr. Henry Heimlich was 96.

Sorry to hear that.  I saw a story earlier this year about how he had saved the life of his cohabitants in the nursing home where he lived.  RIP

Yeah, it is amazing what, now, seems like a simple procedure has saved so many lives. RIP indeed.

His brother was a chiropractor that I went to a few times in Houston. Definitely a quack in my opinion.

I'm just outside of Woodstock and we only got channel 47 if the wind was blowing the right direction, and that was on a 40 foot TV anntenna.  For UHF we got 18(TVO), 24, 28(TVO), 31(City-can see the City TV tower), 35, 40(CBC), 47, 56(CBC), 61(French CBC)

One of the first woman on TV I remember having a crush on. When I was about 4 I remember watching a rerun of Green Acres and pointing to the screen and telling my mom that I loved the woman on it. Zsa Zsa was still in her prime back then.  ;)

99 and 9 husbands later she's done. RIP, lovely lady.

Found it!  Apparently, it was only on the air for one year but then they just kept playing them on that station for years afterward. Ahead of it's time! A lot of other late night talk shows would go on to steal some of their bits. ;D
