I only listened to the Open Lines part of the program, but my sense was that Ian was very edgy about something, and I'm one who admires his patience and restraint with the type of callers Coast attracts these days ... up to a point.

Lovely Bones

I didn't particularly notice any edginess from Ian Friday night, but I did pick up on a tweet exchange he had with some girl who referenced his "emeritus" status on Coast.  She then corrected herself and said she hoped he wasn't actually retired, only on sabbatical.

He replied that "emeritus" was more accurate and said he had actually resigned from Coast but that they'd asked him to stick around to do the once-a-month gig.

Wow.  Like us, he probably knows Coast is Toast.  He's just too professional/polite to say so.

That's very interesting. And to be an "emeritus" at what, 51 years old? It just confirms that Ian's abandoning C2C is indeed due to ill health...he's as sick of the show as we are. He definitely must sense the impending doom/winds of change at C2C, especially in light of the show being dropped in a another major market(Chicago)...

I can just picture Ian puffing out his flabby chest when someone refers to him as 'emeritus'.  Jeez, he's probably having his business cards redone right now.

But after 8 years of George Noory, Ian just now decides the show sucks?  Fairly recently he was arguing with a caller, insisting the show hadn't changed a bit from when Art was doing it.  So are we saying Ian lied about the show being unchanged under the direction of George Noory, and lying now about tininitus being the reason he left?

That tweet was a revelation.  Why stick with a chit chat morning show 5 days a week, but quit a once-a-week gig if it were for physical health rather than mental health?

It's like Knapp is the only one left trying to soldier bravely on, going down with the ship--until he, too, decides to pull a captain of the Costa Concordia.  Who would blame him?

Using his health as an excuse to give the listeners when he knows in his heart it's because George Noory Sucks.

I'd incorrectly assumed that he'd given up the morning show as well. Just more evidence that his tinnitus issues are not the real reason for splitting C2C. He knows how bad the show is, he stopped selling Noory a few years ago. When callers would mention some idiocy that occurred with Noory or one of his guests during the week, Ian would do the "I didn't hear it, so I can't comment on it" routine.

Those are good questions... on top of that, if he's lying about things like some are speculating, how does that reconcile with his being a Deacon?  Aren't chaplains and Deacons supposed to set an example and be honest?

I saw it mentioned somewhere (this thread?) that someone involved with publishing Ian's Jackula book did a web search on Ian as part of some due diligence.  I can't really belive that would have been the first time Ian discovered there is some, um, discontent with his personal style on Coast, and that his connection to George Noory wasn't helping, but maybe it was.  Or maybe when other sites deleted tons of posts he thought it was all gone.

Ian at some point had to have realized George is creepy and terrible and just sucks badly, but probably never listened to George's show and chose to ignore it and defend it when necessary.  He likely enjoyed doing Coast and loved having a bit of national exposure. Could it be the final straw for him was finding websites like this one where at least some of the posters regularly complained about him and pointed out his flaws as well as George's?

Would anyone have ever guessed that he was a member of the clergy, or even went to church, without him telling them?

I think you folks ignore the fundamentals.  As long as C2C is adding new affiliates, Noory is probably quite safe.  Punnett's OK as a host, but his biggest strength is that Noory's is, to the thinking C2C audience, so bad 5 nights a week.  I don't think Punnett could handle the off beat stuff as a steady diet. He can be very strident.

I don't think he's safe at all. In the past two years, C2C has gone to lesser stations in NYC and Boston and he's being scaled back in Chicago. He may gain lesser affiliates in tertiary markets, but overall Premier can't be enthusiastic about the state of C2C.

I think the first sentence answers the second one. I get the impression Ian thrives on feedback, of any sort.

I still say he was edgy. I predict Ian changes the Sunday nights to less strange and just more Ian. If the ship is sinking why pick up a guitar and do your own thing

And I still concur, HR.

That was fascinating info about the Twitter confession, LB.  Wow.

I was kind of bowled over by the blunt honesty of it, Scully.

And regarding his fascination with Twitter: he takes hits on Twitter.  It's not the land of Milk and Honey for him all the time.  So I'm not sure I completely buy Paper*Boy's theory about sites like this where there's Ian criticism being the last straw.  He's always encouraging people to keep the lines of communication open with him on Twitter (one reason I thought maybe he still wanted to stay on Coast if he wanted to stay in touch with his "Coasties," as he calls them).

Maybe he's just a Twitter geek.

One of the things that has always struck me about Ian is when talks over callers, contradicts them, puts words in their mouths, continues arguing, won't let them finish a sentence, gets all upset, dumps the call, then calmly, almost mournfully, says all he wanted was to have a conversation.

So I don't really buy it when he talks about communicating and all that.  He doesn't take disagreement, let alone criticism, very well.

He certainly loves to hear himself talk.  And this is better yet, he can see his comments being recorded and kept.  Now all he needs is something interesting to tweet.

As far as quality goes; Ian has it going on. He's the only one I listen to anymore. I really liked Rollyee James. Too bad she has too much class to bend over and let PR ram her up the wazoo unlike George "too afraid of a Ouija board" Snorery.

Have you ever noticed how he constantly makes thinly veiled references to sex with many of his female guests? It's creepy as hell and certainly not the kind of behaviour one would expect from anyone even remotely religious.

When he interviews the horse man, he seems a little bit too eager to find out more about just how attracted he is to the mares, their recaction, how he knew, how far he took things, etc.  When he interviewed the woman who had been one of several wives of a Mormon polygamist, he was pretty icky wondering whether all the wives had sex with the guy at the same time or if it was one at a time.  I don't recall exactly what he asked one of the astronauts about sex in space, but he had certainly put some thought into that as well.

It's been a long time I listened to one of his shows, but if I think about it for awhile, pretty sure I could come up with other examples when he was creepily inappropriate.  Especially for a 'Deacon'.  Somehow he never got around to talking about the details of his wife and Dawg the Bounty Hunter though.

WTF!!?? Please, do tell about his wife and Dawg the Bounty Hunter.......  Ian always sounds like a 12 year old boy when he refers to sex, too.  Like he might not have ever actually experienced it, but has heard about it and knows it's fun, but not something "nice" people do.

Between some of his creepy questions and comments and a sense of humor that makes people want to reach through the radio with both hands to shake him, one would be excused for thinking they were listening to a jr high school dork.  One of the coy smart-asses that thinks he's a little brighter than he actually is.

I never heard the story, I turned it on a few minutes late one night and Ian was in the middle of what sounded like damage control.  The part I head was him saying 'at the end of the day my wife is still my wife and Dog is still a dog', and that he just wanted to address the rumors.  After that I've seen a few mentions on some posts here and there but no other details.

As George would say 'Hoo Knoawes'.

A human being (nay, a mammal, even) that's obsessed with sex? How unusual  :D

I never heard anything solid about it either, other than in forums like this.
But it's sort of understandable.
If Ian's "never actually experienced it" -- what must things be like for the wife??   It's over before she's in the room.
Ol' Dog Chapman might have a face that could make a train take a dirt road, but I'd imagine he's got a fair share of testosterone, and has probably done his share of kink.  Hell, his just knowing how to Do Something is probably more than Ian can offer.
Hack joke: Ian had some mojo working once, but decided he'd never do "that" again.   His wife was yelling "oh God, oh God!" and Ian thought that was blasphemous.

A few years ago, Punnett creeped me out big time when he discussed briefly, on national radio, that his son was (peripherally) in an erotic dream he had.  EEEeeewww.  Betcha that boy had a great week at school following that show.

Ew is right.  Talk about not knowing when to shut up.  After they check Noory's computer, maybe they should check Ian's.

As has been mentioned, he talks about sex a lot. He also seems to have odd dreams.  So I am not sure if this is the dream you are thinking of, but he once described a dream in which a prostitute was at his house to have sex with his sons.  The only way he could prevent it was to have sex with the prostitute himself.  He said it was like a nightmare, because he wanted to remain faithful to his wife.  He asked the "dream expert" guest what this meant.  She really had to struggle to come up with something non-embarrassing.
