This has been making the rounds for the past few days and seems to have finally been picked up by the media. The whole video is 18min long, but the best bit is at 11min when she tries to force her way into the cockpit while saying she can fly the plane before berating the crew.

Disruptive Spirit airlines passenger refuses to leave, forces whole flight to deplane
QuoteA disruptive passenger who was late to board a Spirit Airlines flight from Atlanta to Las Vegas refused to get off, forcing the crew to ask all other passengers to deplane. Safira Allen, 25, recorded herself being asked to leave her flight on May 1, allegedly for arriving late to the gate, but boarding anyway, reported the New York Post. She also filmed herself telling the airline’s crew â€" as well as a security officer â€" that she was “not getting off this plane" before blaming Spirit Airlines for her tardiness in the first place, claiming that Spirit closed the boarding gate 20 minutes earlier than scheduled.

An incident report provided to Fox News by the Atlanta Police Department says Allen had simply run past the gate agent when she was told she was too late to board. Allen claimed to have seen another white passenger board the plane late. She then used explicit language to explain this point, before immediately remarking that she doesn’t cuss.
“Y’all ain’t let the n---- on this m-----f-----. They’re gonna have to put me off, because they’re gonna tell me I was cussing. I don’t even cuss. I’m orthodox. So what are you saying?”

She later likened the crew and security to “terrorists” when security asked her to get out of her seat.

“I’m not getting off this plane to negotiate with no terrorists,” Safira claims, referring to the responding officer. “Cause clearly, they’re the terrorists. They’re terrorizing me in my own country.” Allen also took issue with the airline’s name, saying, “Y’all going to use Jesus’ name, the Holy Spirit? That’s got to change, y’all need to be called something else â€" y’all need to change y’all name because nothing Holy Spirit about this airline.”

The crew soon came over the loudspeaker to apologize for the disruption, and inform all the other passengers that they would need to deplane so the flight could “start the boarding process again” on the same plane.

“If I can’t go to Las Vegas, Nevada, neither can y’all,” Allen yelled. As passengers disembarked, she shouted racially insensitive language at passengers â€" greeting some with the phrase “konichiwa” and offering to speak “Espanol” with others â€" and told several they were going to “hell.”
After the other passengers leave â€" and after Allen berated the crew standing near the cockpit â€" a police officer arrives to escort Allen off the plane, as she continues to yell at security and staff.

ABC commentator says parents should ask babies for consent to nappy change
QuoteDeanne Carson said in an ABC News segment that families could set up “a culture of consent” in the home by saying to their babies: “I’m going to change your nappy now, is that OK?” The CEO of youth relationship service Body Safety Australia added: “Of course, a baby’s not going to respond, ‘Yes Mum, that’s awesome, I’d love to have my nappy changed,’ but if you leave a space and wait for body language and wait to make eye contact, then you’re letting that child know that their response matters.”

[...]

Ms Carson made a statement on Facebook in response to her vocal critics.

“I gave an interview the other day about teaching consent to young children,” she said. “Sadly, some people have chosen to ridicule me (oh no! Pink hair! Must be a lesbian!) and the notion of giving infants bodily autonomy (poo in nappies har har amiright?!)
“For those people I’m posting this. “One in three girls, one in seven boys will be sexually assaulted by the time they are eighteen years old. One in twelve girls will be sexually abused before their sixth birthday. The work we do with children, teachers and parents is international best practice in abuse prevention. It teaches children their rights AND their responsibilities and connects them with people who care and can help. It invites their parents into the discussion and is sensitive to cultural and family values. “Troll me all you want, add to your blog inches, but remember that when you do, you are negating the voices of these brave survivors of sexual abuse.”

Australia Is Rich, Strong and Afraid of the World
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/09/world/australia/australia-is-rich-strong-and-afraid-of-the-world.html

The only conclusion possible from reducing foreign aid and increasing funding for intelligence agencies and border security is that Australia is afraid of the world.  ::)

Maybe the author was bullied by an Australian at some point...

How well has that policy worked out?   Apparently you and I have a different understanding of the concept of nuclear nonproliferation.  My understanding is that one of it’s fundamental aims is to prevent dangerous regimes from getting nuclear weapons (beyond those who already have them.)  The Iran deal did not do that.  In fact it pretty much guaranteed that Iran will have a deliverable nuclear weapon in 2025.  Moreover, Iran sits on one of the worlds largest oil reserves.  The idea that it needs nuclear reactors to satisfy it’s energy needs is laughable.

Nah it's a central pillar and known flaw of the treaty:

QuoteArticle IV: 1. Nothing in this Treaty shall be interpreted as affecting the inalienable right of all the Parties to the Treaty to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination and in conformity with Articles I and II of this Treaty.

2. All the Parties to the Treaty undertake to facilitate, and have the right to participate in, the fullest possible exchange of equipment, materials and scientific and technological information for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Parties to the Treaty in a position to do so shall also co-operate in contributing alone or together with other States or international organizations to the further development of the applications of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, especially in the territories of non-nuclear-weapon States Party to the Treaty, with due consideration for the needs of the developing areas of the world.

I was talking specifically about North Korea though, and have no strong feelings about the Iran deal in any way.

That’s pretty much the soft-headed thinking that allowed N.K. to develop nuclear weapons over the years. Clinton gave them nuclear technology so they could build nuclear reactors to keep their people warm.  Maybe if we organized an enormous group hug and sent James Taylor over to sing You’ve Got a Friend everything would be just dandy.

The cat's out of the bag now, and there's a difference between how you should act once a country has nuclear weapons and while they're visibly trying to acquire them. NK has achieved their long stated (ie since the 60s) goal of developing nukes despite all the sanctions, domestic issues, and efforts to stop them so it's not as though they're going to easily (if ever) give them up. So why is it unreasonable to encourage them to now shift the resources used on their nuclear weapons to less destructive areas?

Also I should point out that encouraging development of peaceful usage of nuclear energy (eg building nuclear reactors to keep their people warm) is one of the core tenets of the Non Proliferation Treaty. North Korea was a party to this treaty until 2003 and Iran still is.

You have a much more benign view of the dictatorship in NK than I do. Kim has no interest in "better conditions for the populace" beyond keeping it in the near-starvation state necessary to keep a primitive economy running and his military in line. "Peace" for them means the ability to keep their concentration camps operating and the population subdued without basic human rights without any interference or pressure from the outside world.
I agree with all of this, which is what makes it extremely unlikely for them to give up their ultimate trump card. Better conditions (and I don't mean freedoms necessarily) for the populace also has ramifications for the stability of the country and regime as well as propaganda value.

Quote from: Value Of Pi on May 07, 2018, 07:29:39 PM
NK has already tried building a nuclear reactor in Syria, helped Qaddafi with his nuke program, and will sell their tech to anybody if they need the cash enough.
What happened to Gadaffi is reason enough to give NK pause for giving up their weapons.

But let's say NK gets rid of their weapons tomorrow - they'll still have the knowledge and skills to sell to other groups, just not completed weapons. They're hardly the only guilty party in selling on nuclear expertise; there's been speculation over the years that Saudi Arabia helped fund the Pakistani nuclear program and/or have an agreement in place to transfer weapons should the 'need' ever arise.

Your last thought is a nice, reasonable wish -- gradually lessening tensions thanks to regular, ongoing diplomatic activity -- except for the reality that the two people calling most of the shots are Trump and Kim. They're each looking to score a coup. Slow, long term progress is not really on the table. They each want a big win and they want it now.

[...]

but there's no middle ground here between having nukes and totally giving up those nukes.

It's wishful thinking sure, but maybe if there was less of a focus on the nuclear issue and more on peace and better conditions for the populace we'd have some progress as opposed to none. You don't see anyone complaining about their biological and chemical weapons, or the masses of artillery pointing at Seoul when they are just as deadly.

Not with a dictatorship as historically untrustworthy as NK.
India, Pakistan, and the potential acquisition of nuclear weapons by Saudi Arabia are much more concerning than NK. NK is fairly predictable in the way they conduct themselves and - excluding the possibility of regime collapse - them having nukes doesn't really bother me at all beyond potentially selling their expertise to other parties as they have with other weapons.

Just wanted to point out that many people and most of the media are making it seem like an accomplishment to get NK to the bargaining table on their nuclear program, more so because it's a direct negotiation between NK and the U.S. involving POTUS.

IMO, at this point it's no accomplishment at all. NK has always wanted direct talks with the U.S. (mainly for propaganda purposes and to cut out local allies like Japan). We've always refused direct talks, even before nukes were the issue. So, this is a win for NK to this point. Also, China is starting to relax sanctions, taking advantage of all the happy talk.

Kim is playing this smart. He's given up nothing tangible to date and he's already made gains ahead of the summit. As for the outcome, I'd bet on Kim being a better negotiator than Trump and the world holding its breath and hoping that hawks like Bolton and Pompeo can stop Trump from making dangerous concessions in return for empty promises. Oh, the irony of Bolton maybe getting in Trump's ear and saving us from an even worse situation than we have now.

It's going to take one very smart, very tough president to get NK to give up its nukes, something they have absolutely no intention of doing regardless of what they say. Trump will fail like all his predecessors. But hey, maybe the next president. Always hope, I guess.

I think there needs to be less focus on the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and more progress on improving the lives of their citizens and developing better relations between the South and North (eg a more formalised end to the Korean War, resolution of border issues, etc). If I were NK I wouldn't give up my ultimate trump card either and would be nervously looking at the history of countries and regimes which have either given up the weapons completely or ended WMD programs following international pressures.
It also comes across as a hypocrisy that you have countries like the US pushing for denuclearisation when they themselves have a massive arsenal of nuclear weapons, and when other arguably less stable countries (ie Pakistan and India) have nuclear weapons without a peep from anyone.

I don't expect them to give up their nukes or for reunification to suddenly occur, but maybe with further talks there'll be some improvement of the general situation in the region...

Just finished The Young Pope. Excellent series, but might not be for everyone as on first glance it appears to be just a lot of style and being edgy for the sake of being edgy (but it really isn't). I'd probably disagree with the basic plot synopsis given by most sites/HBO, since it's really about a man having a crisis of faith who becomes content with himself and his role in the world. Unsatisfying ending, but still worth it overall and all the plotlines are tied up.
