Quote from: SpookyTim on May 07, 2018, 12:48:47 AMI may be wrong, but I thought Art mentioned once he was given the rights to use that song in perpetuity.
I think perpetuity ended 3 weeks ago.

Quote from: K_Dubb on May 07, 2018, 12:41:55 AMGood luck with that.  To my knowledge that approach is more-or-less confined to academia; I've wondered how it would play in Peoria.  People get so hung up on whether it is real.  Ideas are real.
True, & time to test some of that reality.  How about some blinded ghost investig'n results?  We know how to do systematic blinding in much of psi research, why not ghosts & hauntings?  Some ghost hunters do use blinding, but unfortunately only w low power, because of the resources available to them.

Quote from: dsz on May 07, 2018, 12:32:15 AMRemember... It's now "Heather Wade's Midnight in the Desert". Completely new and original.
Who has the rights to the Crystal Gale song?

Quote from: Faustina on May 07, 2018, 12:31:04 AMI think alien life does exist in another galaxy and they could be far more advanced than we are, hence UFOs.
If they were that advanced, they wouldn't have UFOs, or FOs of any kind.

If you ever encounter an entity that claims to have flown here in an object from another planet (let alone galaxy), you can be sure they're lying.  Suppose you flew there; would you tell them the truth?

Quote from: Mels-hole1984 on May 07, 2018, 12:27:52 AMIf he's keeping the name MITD then logically it has to be someone out in the desert.
On your radio dial, like Madison Square Garden or Liquid Ivory Snow.

Quote from: Faustina on May 07, 2018, 12:12:08 AMUFOs, if they exist, mean we're not alone in the universe.
I think we already know there's >1 person in the world.  But all UFOs are are things that appear to be flying, appear to be objects, & are unidentified.  Presumably if I'm not flying it, someone else is, so what?
QuoteGhosts, if they exist, prove that our souls survive the death of our bodies.
How does that follow?  They're discorporeal entities, but may not ever have come from human, animal, or any other bodies.  They're neither necessary nor sufficient evidence of soul survival.

Quote from: SpookyTim on May 07, 2018, 12:05:40 AMNo, regurgitative paranormal radio has run its course. Some of us are still looking for the stories beyond the grainy photos or videos. Or even exploring the exact point you made--why don't we have better proof? And is proof even possible?

As much as I enjoy talking about the paranormal, I enjoy even more the pursuit of figuring out why we still need to talk about it.
Yes!  Where does this sense of the numinous come from?!

Quote from: Kizuna Ai on May 06, 2018, 11:52:10 PMThe paranormal is a shit topic that has run it's course. Maybe back in the 90's you could get away with fake shitty grainy UFO pictures but now everyone had a HD camera in their pocket and there is still no proof of ayy lmaos.
"Paranormal" covers a lot more ground than that -- most of it not even visual, much not even aural.  Psi research, still hot.  Where the fuck does consciousness even come from, let alone go?

UFOs, yeah, those ran their course quite a while ago, although there are still things to be said about secret aircraft -- you know, actual flying things made by actual people at times in the present & past when they weren't known of.  Now that's an exciting subject, esp. when disinfo about them is thrown into the mix.

And paranormal is just the leading edge of the fringe.

Radio and Podcasts / Re: Art Bell
May 06, 2018, 09:27:51 PM
Quote from: ShayP on May 06, 2018, 02:05:13 PMToday I listened to a past interview with Sean Carroll.  Such a good interview from Art.  When talking to people in the science fields, especially astronomy, why can't Noory at least try to ask pertinent questions like Art did?  The interview was so educational and I was left wanting more.  When Noory does it I feel bad for the guest.  Then again it's the easiest interview they will ever do.
"Easiest" only in certain ways.  If they were actually trying to get something across past Mr. Noory's blocking & derailments, then they've got to be some of the hardest interviews.  Probably lousy for selling books.

John Bachelor is often scarily up on the subject matter, even exceeding Milt Rosenberg.

Quote from: ShayP on May 06, 2018, 09:00:32 PMHe's good in a karaoke sense and has enough voice to get by.  My issue is the marketing from C2C, that at these events he is singer as well.  I get the shtick, however try harder as a host instead of the same lazy cookie cutter bullshit and sideshow acts.  Am I supposed to be in awe of his singing and stage presence?  Pfft!
No.  Just seems like he could be a more interesting entertainer if he were doing stuff he were really interested in, rather than C2C.  He could & probably should try harder, but if he hasn't by now it doesn't seem he cares enough to improve C2C.  I think someone there also needs better imagination for subject matter instead of trying to do Art Bell's show forever.

Just listen to much of DMDN's schedule.  They largely feed off Mr. Bell's old audience, yet make it fresh & interesting.  Maybe it's too much to ask for to sustain that in the overnight slot, but you'd think a lineup of b'cast stns. like that of C2C could afford something as good as amateur podcasts.

Noory meanwhile could do like Steve Allen, say, or Don Francisco, or Joe Franklin.

How about one of the DJs from last yr.'s abortive Newt Radio stream -- the former Centenary U. radio people?

Quote from: Mels-hole1984 on May 06, 2018, 08:43:22 PMI hope not. He comes off as very pretentious to me. I dont like his style. Im really hoping its Ian Punnet. I know its a long shit with his  tinnitus but, I can hope.
If the show doesn't have to be air-friendly, & he can therefore get away w not wearing headphones listening to delay, might be feasible.

Quote from: ShayP on May 06, 2018, 08:37:11 PMNo. Yes.
Not your style when it comes to the singing, I take it.

To me he sounds a good cut above what I'm used to hearing among serious amateur bar singers who meet weekly for the purpose.  Most of them don't even try for vibrato like that, but instead try to produce an impression of, like, that kind.

But I do know other good singers, & understand it's not that saleable a commodity on its own.

Still funny to think of Mr. Bell drawing the blackout curtains in the middle of the day in Manila, for the mood.

Quote from: chefist on May 06, 2018, 07:50:21 PM$500,000 a year in his contract is pretty good in radio...then whatever he makes on his side projects is a plus.
Plus, Mr. Noory apparently really can sing.  C2C still sucks w him, but it must be making $.

Maybe we should try to narrow it down by sector.  Like, for instance:

experienced on-mic or not
experienced in presumed fringe subject matter or not
known to many Bellgabbers or not
male or female
American or foreign
other entertainment experience or not
other journalism experience or not
in-one or group/panel
legit, charlatan, deluded, or crazy

Is the nickname "Keef" an allusion to the Futurama cartoon character whose name is an allusion to Mel Kiefer, who drew the cartoons for How to Murder Your Wife depicting Bash Branigan, on whose name & character Futurama character Zap Branigan was based?

Meanwhile, w a great delivery like yours, why aren't you doing more in the industry?  Or are you, & I just don't know about it?

Kinda long shot that it'd be Glen Jones, so give me odds, like for a vodka gimlet.

Jason Jarvis's comeback?

My junior high Science teacher told his class that having sex with a condom is like wearing socks in the shower.

Not sure why he felt this was an appropriate comment to make to 10th graders. In a religious school.
Not sure why it's appropriate for JHS to go up thru 10th grade, even in a religious school.

Quote from: brig on May 06, 2018, 11:50:56 AMI think they were all in on the plan for Art to begin a new show, collect subscribers using Arts name as the draw for subscriptions, knowing full well, it was going to be Heathers show.  She would have never gathered subscribers from the get go, had she made the effort to become a famous radio show on her own, based on her "on air" history, without attaching herself to Arts name.
Well, yeah, either you or someone else here has been saying that for ~ 2 yrs. now, & I became fairly well convinced of it myself over this past winter.

Quote from: brig on May 06, 2018, 12:12:17 PMThe part that keeps going through my mind is Art saying he doesn't know why bellgabbers weren't supporting Heather in the way he had imagined they would.  Bellgabbers are highly intelligent, intuitive people, and I think the bellgabbers felt all along, right from the blitz days, started by Heather incidently,  that nobody involved was being totally honest with them.

THE BLITZ THREAD started by HEATHER ( a must read for anyone who wasn't here then, and a good reminder for people who were):

I was never quite sure what I was supposed to be doing, so I just phoned WABC, WOR, maybe another NYC area stn. or 2 blindly w/o much info to give them other than cx.

Quote from: Richard Groyper on May 06, 2018, 05:33:51 PMive been gone for 2 days. did Heather do anything lulzy Friday-Saturday?
Do I get a break?  I got sick over a week ago, hospitalized a few days w parainfluenza B (probably type 3, given the spring peak in incidence) bronchiolitis, setting off my asthma, the treatment for which sent me into atrial fibrill'n & almost into significant hyperglycemia.  Feh.  Probably caught from one of my students -- bet it was one w a young child.  Still going to take a while to get over, then must resume some delayed work.

Quote from: Renegade Smurf on May 06, 2018, 08:48:45 AMTo keep this from looking like a CV, my background is neuroscience focusing on pharmacology, biophysics, and molecular biology. When I'm not cutting up rats, I do endurance running, black diamond skiing, build/ride motorcycles, ingest pharmaceuticals, and watch bad movies.

Like many on here, before that, I've dug ditches, done farm work,, worked in factory, sold my body, etc etc.
My career's gone mostly the opposite direction.  I'm a Ph.D. biochemist who could be down to ditches & factory work if I weren't a klutz & now in only so-so health.

I know someone else w a background like that whose wife lurks here.

And she does have a great voice, when she's not trying to trick it up.

As far as Ms. Wade's recent antics, well, there's a lot of that in show biz, no need for them to haunt her forever.  I wouldn't hire her, but it doesn't seem to be a disqualifier for many.

I haven't mentioned my latest deduction: that Lost character's Sawyer's name & persona were mostly derived from that of Ray Shaw, the Manchurian Candidate, the book by which name I've been reading recently.

Quote from: albrecht on May 06, 2018, 04:13:34 PMWe got a few low power stations who play polka shows. Saturday night and Sunday usually. I think maybe one still left that plays it all the time but you only can get it in the rural county were the Bohemian/Czechs moved. And dance halls are still operated by SPJST but the only time I've gone it was just normal country music stuff.
The weekly hour "Dance With Me, Stanley" on WFMU is largely polka.  Well, really what it largely is is DJ Stashu's energy!

Used to be some polka programs on the AM dial in NYC, as on WVOX, not sure lately.

Quote from: SaucyRossy on May 06, 2018, 04:49:13 PMI’m very much a behind the scenes person. On air takes a ton of talent.
Seriously, if that statement is informed by experience, thank you for writing so.  I've never been sure how much the talent needs to be distributed between the roles.
