Far less dangerous than believing everything he says and letting him do what he likes. Your president is an adult (allegedly) and being attacked from the other side is part of the job. If he chooses to get sidetracked by criticism and starts tweeting in the early hours of the morning that's on him not anybody else. I didn't notice Obama being given similar latitude to get on with the job and 'give him a chance'.

You bloody Americans. You can't wait to get down on your knees and worship the first idiot that comes along promising you a sackful of candy.

I can't wait for you to die a slow, excruciating death from the infection you contract after puncturing your bowels by sitting on a sharp, lengthy object.

Seems like the gist is .. Let's explain what's going on now, by alluding to mythological patterns in historical times, but we're carefully not mentioning the trademarked phrase "ancient aliens".

I hope you replenish your stock of single malt as soon as possible, because you're kind of a mean drunk on Courvoisier.

I'm still in awe of the stunning dress Sarah Jessica Parker wore to the 2010 Academy Awards that she fashioned for next to nothing from a shower curtain trimmed with some decorative embroidered patches she found at Hobby Lobby.

Jammied, slippered, cat's on a cushion and sipping my tea. Let's go

Nice of you to share your tea with your cat, TL! I visited a friend a couple of years ago whose cat craves black coffee.

Cheers!

Yeah but weren't most people there getting a pretty raw deal there when the oil corps ruled? Genuinely asking here and not trying to make a point.  ;)

No argument here. I'm not defending the government of Venezuela, the Soviet Union, Red China, or any other despotic regime, but in many instances there are very good reasons why "they" hate us, that tend to get overlooked even though those reasons are hardly ancient history. I read Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq
, by Steven Kinzler, a couple of years ago, and while I was already familiar with some of the history, I learned quite a bit from it.

I also recommend his book about the Dulles brothers (The Brothers: John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, and Their Secret World War, who were brilliant in their own ways, but whose international policies often had disastrous consequences which we're still paying for.

Sad...one of the last stations in a major market that has a personality. Now to be assimilated by the Clear Channel Borg or similar.

That is a shame, because WGN's programming always had character and engaging local personalities. It was where I first heard Ian Punnett when he had an afternoon show for a couple of years that was usually zany in a good way. I'm not surprised at the news, though, because it started going downhill a few years ago, and dropping the Cubs games after more than sixty years because the management didn't want to pay the price for the rights was not a good sign. I just hope the new ownership doesn't sack Orion Samuelson, who's been doing the daily farm report since 1960.

I refuse to go down to Hollywood Boulevard.  ;D

If you like Flo and Eddie, refuse to read Howard Kaylan's memoir, which I'm not even going to name or link to. He stands out as one of the most loathsome, self-centered shit heads in a profession teeming with them.

On the other hand, I read Keith Richards' autobiography at the same time and was pleasantly surprised and impressed to discover what an articulate, thoughtful person he is. I'd known very little about his personal life before that, and it was quite the revelation.

The Gospel of The Grateful Dead

If you haven't read this already, I highly recommend it. There's a lot of info that was out there for the asking but hadn't been fully investigated. Basically, it was more of a monumental, senseless clusterfuck than previously reported, and it's a miracle more people didn't die.

Check me if I wrong, it has been awhile but are not the words Do to others what you would want them to do to you actually in the New Testament? Anyway...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Rule

You're not wrong. All I'm saying is that the concept isn't exclusive to any one religion, or culture for that matter, although the wording may vary.

"Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself." â€" Confucius

"If people regarded other people's families in the same way that they regard their own, who then would incite their own family to attack that of another? For one would do for others as one would do for oneself." â€" Mozi

Quote from: Juan on February 25, 2017, 08:18:37 PM
And where does the Golden Rule come from?

Fair enough, because most religions have incorporated the concept and pay lip service to it, but it's not the foundation for any of them. Which is a shame, because I can't think of any wars or that were started over a difference of opinion about it.
#231
I would like politicians to quit pandering to religion altogether and quit wearing theirs on their sleeves. I don't care what a person believes or doesn't as long as they follow the Golden Rule.

I've wanted to give it a chance because of Levy but it just looks so typical sitcom schlock to me. Is it really worthy?

It doesn't really break any new ground, and I was expecting a little more from the writing, but Levy and Catherine O'Hara, who is outstanding in everything she does, are as funny as always. Chris Elliot is also good in his usual type of creepy guy role. Give it a try. It's good enough that I'm going to watch more of it.

The first two episodes of "Schitt's Creek" on Netflix last night. Thought it was pretty funny if not gut busting hilarious, and will definitely watch the rest.

Mitchum was one cool cat  8)

He was about as cool as it gets! I love his reply to the reporter who asked him about being in jail, "Just like a weekend in Palm Springs…only you meet a better class of people."

I still have to wonder what the hell Scorcese was thinking when he remade Cape Fear, because Robert De Niro's over the top psycho portrayal of Max Cady can't hold a candle to the menace Mitchum evoked just with a glare and a few quiet threatening words.

If you haven't already read it, you might enjoy the bio, Baby, i Don't Care. It goes into way too much fine detail about some of his movies, but it shows him to be a very intelligent and surprisingly sensitive person beneath the tough guy exterior (and he was plenty tough, too).

This is the last thing I ever expected to hear from Darryl Issa at this point in time, I must say.

"You're right that you cannot have somebody â€" a friend of mine, Jeff Sessions â€" who was on the campaign and who is an appointee," Issa said. "You're going to need to use the special prosecutor's statute and office," adding it would be insufficient to hand the job off to the deputy attorney general, another political appointee.

Issa then pivoted his attention to Russia, arguing that its president, Vladimir Putin, is a "bad guy" who murders his political enemies.

"We have to work with [the Russians]; we don't have to trust them," Issa said. "We need to investigate their activities and we need to do it because they are bad people."

Did you not see the tongue hanging out of my emoticon on the post?  That was your clue that I was only joking.  And no, I was impersonating MD.  He likes to throw that term faggot around a lot.

#lovetrumpshate is also another clue that the bit was merely satire.  What kind of idiot would post a hateful comment then follow it up with #lovetrumpshate?

Oy vey!

To be honest, I experience a number of conflicting emotions when I see a tongue hanging out of an emoticon posted by a self-loathing cinephile. And I don't know how many kinds of idiots there are, but I know there's no point in trying to understand anything they do from a rational perspective.

Ha. I'm guessing Yorkie is a mezzo, considering his country's state and views. (I'm kidding, don't think he is a chick, but, who am I to judge. It is a matter of self-identification. And Brexit might bring him/them back.) And not sure where the others stand. Me, is the guy in church or anthem times that is mainly voicing the words (especially with new songs and that crap) because bad singer or sounding awful when actually singing or the yelling at a metal concert or ball game or to the radio stuck in traffic who goes hoarse quickly and is annoying or gets "looks," especially in traffic when an old country song comes on. But further speculation: Jackstar would be like all over the place, with multiple types of singing/whistling/yodeling and instruments like Thijs van Leer from FOCUS (this is a big compliment by the way.)

No, you're thinking of the almost unimaginable alternative universe where people settle their differences peacefully and put aside their selfish, parochial self-interests for their mutual benefit. In that one, the scenario you described is actually the worst thing that ever happens, and most people never even notice.  :D

No, unless it's Jim Backus, and now you're just being condescending. How do you live with yourself, hater?
