It has come to the point that on extended driving trips, I'm more excited to find a broadcast of the John Tesh show than a broadcast feat. Noory.

This is another one on my "to watch" list. Once work calms down for me hopefully I'll be able to relax with it.

Rob Wells is enough to sell me on the movie, especially his death scene which seems to be shown in the trailer.

Are we talking TPB Rob Wells?

I don't know what your into but not really my cup of tea. Grind-house type film just super cheesy and gory. But I too am a Rob Wells fan but its really brief scene with him fyi. Some films that were pretty good from magnet as of late were: Vanishing on 7th street, Black Death, 13 Assassin's (really a great Samurai adventure film, and I saw the Devil (very sad revenge; same actor as Old Boy) cant think of others (Bronson- not so new but if you haven't seen it). But I would say Hobo with a shotgun and Power Kids were dumbest of Magnet films I have seen for a while.

Hope this helps. I guess I should go to the movie watching thread, and speaking of which Onan's avatar reminded me to watch the Big Lebowski (so good).

I don't mind old Grindhouse, just because of the history factor, but it's not something I'd genrally look for unless it was an iconic film.  But I'm debating this just because of "The Rutger Factor".  The amount of possible grindhouse-ness in the film is what's holding me back (Don't mind grindhouse, can't stand Troma - as far as over the top goriness - so maybe it's the possible Troma-ish-ness that scares me).

As far as the other Magnet films you mentioned - Vanishing on 7th Street came off as a letdown to me.  Had a strong start but petered out towards the end.  And the acting of Thandie Newton was gawd-awful. Black Death was decent, but I can't stand the close-ups of the monk kids mouth.  13 Assasins was a really good movie reminiscent of older samurai and western flicks. Bronson was an interesting film, but mostly because I enjoy British gangster/crime films.  If you liked it I suggest looking for the movie Chopper with Eric Bana.  I actually just looked at the Magnet list on their site and realized I've watched quite a few of the films on it.  For anyone that likes/d The Troll Hunter I'd suggest the film Monsters.  Luckily a lot of the Magnet films are available on Netflix.  Gonna watch I Saw the Devil tonight.

Yeah I saw it a while back. I really enjoyed it, thought it was well made for such a low budget. Had the whole clover field feel but much better. More substance and based on actual folklore. I pretty much check Magnet productions to see if they ever have a new film (how I found Troll Hunter).

Speaking of Magnet Films, have you seen Hobo With a Shotgun, and if so how was it?
#214
Just saw it last weekend as well and was pleasantly surprised.  The technical application of the folklore was awesome and made the movie more than just an  average "monster movie".

Watched another film - Rammbock - Berlin Undead which also wasn't bad, although it was a tad short.

I wouldn't take being called a moron, even indirectly, on these forums any differently than being called a genius. Just sayin.

As to evil synchronicities... well I think that may be a conceit. Maybe not. But our use of time is arbitrary... commonly accepted but arbitrary. We use a 12/24 hour day. Why? Well because Egyptians sorta maybe invented the sundial and they thought 12 knuckles was pretty nifty. So they broke down time into 12 daytime units and at night they used the stars. During the time of absolute darkness there were 12 bright stars. And they connected that importance to knuckles. Yes it is very scientific.

The point I am so poorly getting to is the hour of 6 could have just as easily been the hour ""some ratio of 10 to 12". Or some other ratio.

So (what's another word for so?) connecting an arbitrary time number to an arbitrary number to a letter code (also from the distant past) might not have the significance you think. Or maybe it is important for you to identify 666 on 6/6/6 (the last 6 actually being 2006, which isn't 6 at all) (and since we are using a numerical value for another arbitrary reference 2006 may really be 400000) by knowing about 666. I dunno.

But it is all made up. A reference point to be sure, but made up it is.

Way to go and just fuck things up by bringing history and reality into this.  Real tactful.

Radio and Podcasts / Re: George Noory appreciation

I think it was The Wanderer who said it most recently, but Noory is a great host.  He provides so much to talk about and laugh at, whether you laugh with or at him.  No, he is no Art, and he has seemed to steer the show away from its true roots, but with the bad comes the good.  Personally I think he's funny as hell, even when he's not trying to be - especially when he's not trying to be.  I don't mind listening to to him when there is a really (REALLY - which is rare nowadays) interesting guest or topic I'm into, but the show in general (in its current state) and format bores the shit out of me.

Pretty cool introduction, I gotta say.  DO you always make entrances that are this dramatic?  If so, WOW!

Oh yeah. Hi.

It's a c-list Hollywood-type marriage (that went down in Vegas).  I give it 5 years tops.  And thats being generous.

Noory has his eyebrow raised in like every single picture. Is he doing it on purpose or is he just fucked up?

He's been taking lessons from his great pal and close personal friend, Billy Gibbons Dwayne Johnson (AKA The Rock).  It really amps up the charisma factor....

It's his nerd tendencies. Those two subjects(comic books and zombies) have HUGE followings that always confounded me. For those of us who complain, I get the feeling there are five who love it...

With the abundance of comicbook/superhero/avenger movies coming out and the higher awareness of graphic novels & comics (thick books vs. thin books?), it's pretty current and not such a shocking topic, especially for Ian.

Superhero/Sci-Fi physics has always been a topic of interest and discussion.  I remember in the fax/BBS days a package/article that circulated discussing how Star Trek's warp speed was possible.  Whether it was valid or not, it was discussed.

Unless I'm riffing on the show, I can't be fucked listening to that garbage/drivel.  It's part of the 'Homer Simpson-nization' of the US using the 'McDonalds' model.  Play to the absolute lowest common denominator with the lowest IQ with the least amount of work or cost.  ...

I say this, Wanderer's first paragraph, pretty much sums up what Open Lines has turned into.  I don't really think there is much difference in the quality of callers (I always thought they were "drunks,kooks,wise-asses and truly odd beings"), but the subject matter they discuss has definitely changed, and the show has either changed with it or has been instrumental in causing the change.

Also, Art had skill and finesse when it came to handling various types of callers, from phonecall to interview and everything in between.  Part of the charm was his reaction to a caller; Noory seems to lack a charasmatic aspect, that Art had, in his interviewing style, according to many.

The overall change in the show's feel and direction is one of the things that makes Ian's show more enjoyable IMO - at least Ian is still the Ian he always was and that familiarity & tie with the "good old days" seems to remain.

Yep. I couldn't take it anymore, so I got an internet radio and have been listening to the CoastGab stream. Absolute heaven! It's like the difference between champagne and really watery, yet bitter beer.

So true.  But isn't that comparison a little harsh on watery, bitter beer?

On a side note...... I just tuned in to C2C & Snoors for the first time in 6 or 7 months(<<forgot that part), Ian and Knapp shows aside, and I swear within the first five seconds I heard the word angel.  I'll go back to the AB stream.

...It's as if he senses something important has been said and does not within himself know how to handle it.  Art was the consummate master at this.  If someone unloaded bullshit on him, he would laugh and you could even hear the volume lower as he leaned back and laughed at the ceiling.  He would then say, "Well, you of all people ought to know"  or my personal favorite "if the picture is a forgery, the whole story is a lie, isn't it?"  or even the global  "Why in the world would you come to that conclusion?"  THANK YOU, Art, I would think, that's exactly my reaction too!...

Anagrammy

Examples of some of the very best aspects of AB's C2C IMO.  I just loved it when stuff like this would happen.  Art could make me laugh my ass off when he did it.  And he did it well.

Danheiser's voice would be perfect for giving the Village People an intro or being the PA announcer at a men's bathhouse.

I swear that over the years I've seen these two words "compliment" each other more than once.  Just an observation that makes me laugh whenever it happens.

Anybody else feeling like Art's jilted lover?   :(

No.  More like someone who realizes that the sporadic string of one night

stands, nights that gave you hopes for the chance of reliving some exciting moments of the past but ended up leaving you completely unfulfilled, are over.

AT this point its preferential and less work to "masturbate" (see: Listening to the old shows on streams) and think of how our "lover" used to be, then get worked up just to realize what the relationship and the lover, has become.

I have read about some scary side-effects from using Ambien. Like going rollerblading around an apartment complex at 3AM for a week with no recollection. Then again, that might be considered a bonus for some people.

Ummmm, yeah. But only because of the benefit of all that exercise.

BTW, if you aren't gonna use that Ambien, I'll take it off your hands....no charge.

It's a decent method, but my problem is keeping the radio on throughout the first hour.  If I can get through the initial cerebral convulsions of my intellect rejecting what I am hearing, then yeah, it becomes soothing.  But so many times I have been on the verge of drifting only to be jarred awake by some dumb gold commercial or Rosanne.  So it's not always guaranteed.
