No Model for Muslim Democracy
IT is fashionable these days for Western leaders to praise Indonesia as a model Muslim democracy. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has declared, “If you want to know whether Islam, democracy, modernity and women’s rights can coexist, go to Indonesia.” And last month Britain’s prime minister, David Cameron, lauded Indonesia for showing that “religion and democracy need not be in conflict.”

Church Row a ‘Dark Time’ for Aceh
Banda Aceh. Another Christian house of worship has been sealed off in Aceh Singkil district, bringing the total since last week to 17 and marking a new low for religious intolerance in the staunchly Muslim province, a rights group said on Wednesday.

Indonesia: Muslims Attack Christians With Stones And Bags Of Urine
A mob of Islamic hard-liners threw stones and bags of urine at the HKBP Filadelphia congreagation of the Batak Christian Protestant Church in Bekasi, on the outskirts of Jakarta, at an Ascension Day service on Thursday. Police tried to stop the mob of some 300 people, but were also attacked, according to reports.

I don't think Wells is any better than Noory, and I get tired of his constant religious references, but if he continues the policy of not taking phone calls when the guest is there as he did last night, he might grow on me.

I listened to George host the show in the last week.  The man seemed absent from the conversation with the guest.  It was like he was not paying very close attention at all.  In contrast, Wells seems to be all there, but not sure exactly what to say next.

I tend to like Wells.  The guy is genuine.  I don't think he is any kind of great talk show host.  If I remember correctly he started his career as a disc-jockey.  Very few disc jockeys learn to be good talk show hosts.  If they run out of something to say another tune is just a second away.  Therefore, Wells doesn't have a lot of experience or training for this position.

Having said that he can certainly can make improvements.  I do think he has talent.  Unfortunately, he doesn't have the opportunity of doing a 5 day a week show, so he cannot really get his shtick down.  Once a week he comes to the studio and has to fill 4 hours. It really can't be that easy.  I sensed some nervousness when he started hosting regularly.

Wells does let his guests run on at times instead of having a more engaging exchanges.  If you dislike Ian then you might like Wells, because he does let his guests talk.  However, he needs to be able to read the discussion better so he can jump in at appropriate times, or otherwise play a more active role while not being a pest.

The beginning of the show is the most important.  Most of the time Wells has failed to engage the listener, so that the audience will feel motivated to continue to listen.  Very earlier in his Saturday night slot the introduction to the show was unprepared, and therefore lousy.  He has gotten better over the last couple months. So, he still needs to improve his opening presentation.

Overall, I find Wells to be a likable personality.  He doesn't take himself too seriously, and has corrected himself when he says something stupid or nonsensical. Hopefully in time he will make the improvements and adjustments, so he can be a successful Coast to Coast host.

As you post on a thread calling others "brain dead". Cognitive dissonance? Anyways, thank you Monsignor for trying to put us ruffians back on the right path.

Several mean spirited people have come to stay.  It is too bad, for this was once a fun forum to hang out in.  In the end, it is easier to make fallacious attacks rather than sound logical arguments.  A lot of people like to score easy points against one other. Many posters exhibit great wit and intelligence, but unfortunately they lack a good will.

I knew you were jealous about my hair, Eddie, but you're even jealous about my acne scars, anyway, thanks for proving my point.

It is true.  The ad hominem attacks and belittling of people on this forum has reached new highs in the last year.  I think it puts a lot of people off.

Thanks guys for all of your good wishes. I promise I won't bore you all to death with pending baby mama talk.

Just the same don't be shy to post some updates.  I think there was a baby thread somewhere.  Where ever that is, that might be a good place.

As the argument goes, if you believe in the divinity of Jesus, a belief in creationism of some sort is required, as Jesus was sent to answer for the original sin of Adam and Eve, and without them, there is no need for Jesus. That's the argument, anyway.
No, it is not required. One can believe in God/Jesus and believe in evolution at the same time.

P.S. I love how the anti-war left takes a powder while there is a Democrat in the White House.

I don't know if you call yourself a "Republican," MV, but if you do, then the answer is "yes."   If the 2012 Republican primary season has shown us anything, it's that anyone claiming to be a "Republican" MUST toe the line of extreme ideology or be politically purged, plain and simple.   Ideological purity and (pardon the term) homogeneity über alles.   And a major plank of that ideology is elaborate, strident ostracism of persons of non-hetero sexual orientation.
That Dick Cheney remains a Republican in good standing while occasionally advocating for his lesbian daughter --or hell, while even having a lesbian daughter-- only speaks for the tremendous cred he's built up with the Republican base through his having a part in the murder of countless thousands around the world.
What's a total mystery to me is how any gay or lesbian person in his/her right mind can claim to be a member of that party.

This goes a long with being a democrat and being pro life.  I've met a few democrats that were pro life and scared to admit it to their party peers.

Here it is:
Apple's Steve Jobs conspired on e-book price-fixing, lawsuits say from LA Times.

I've been looking at books on Amazon lately.  I have found many many e-books by some of the publishers, named in the lawsuit, for which the price is greater than their mass market paperback counterparts.  The mass market will sell for 7.99 while I have seen e-books for 8.39, and even 9.59 on one occasion.

Thank you Steve Jobs for believing in the market, jerk!

Until I used Windows 2000, I had never used a version of windows that felt like anything other than a steaming pile of shit to me.
I tend to agree with you, but SE was a lot better than the original.  If I judge all Microsoft operating systems with the experience I have today, the only one I really happy with in Win7. I did like Windows 2000, but I can't stand WinXP anymore.

I'm not looking forward to Win8, and I plan on buying a couple more copies of 7(hopefully at a discount) shortly before Win8 is released.

It's like every other Windows OS is good and the other one sucks.

Windows 95: Good
Windows 98: Suck
Windows 2000: Good
Windows ME: Suck
Windows XP: Good
Windows Vista: Suck
Windows 7: Good
Windows 8: Suck

I don't like this trend of making desktops look like tablets or phones.  Apple is toying with the idea with Lion and the Google Chrome OS (in spite of me being a Google fanboy) is also evidence of this.

Windows 98 SE: Good (They got it right the 2nd time)

I trust that you have been railing against your state government, if they, like most of them, mandate that you buy car insurance?
:-* :-*

The government doesn't require that I buy a car.  Also, states that do require car insurance only stipulate that a person obtains liability.  Liability is a benefit to other people, and not the insured.  Therefore, the mandate for car insurance is constitutional.

Agreed.  Doug McIntyre gave a sophisticated flair to all-night talk.  Now, it will be "Breaker, Breaker"  when they take open line calls, 10-4 when agreed, and the CB-radio will make a comeback.  Notice the sychronicity between CC-radio or C Craine radio and CB-radio.  George taught me that.
It's the good ole redneck trucker manfolk and that thar radio station.

Yep, can only echo this post.  I was a regular listener of Doug's show.  It was the best late night show.  The replacements don't have the worst show I have ever heard, but I have asked myself, "I wonder what George is talking about tonight?", so it gets a little boring after a while.

The Daily Mail today would like to distract us from the important things going on in the world with this:
Didn't get the memo? Hillary Clinton dons lime green shirt for G20 'family photo' while everyone else wears white
If you look past the nonsense you'll read this:

QuoteOn Monday, the second day of the meeting in Los Cabos, Clinton signed an agreement with Mexico for developing oil and gas reservoirs that straddle the countries' boundaries.

It is the first deal of its kind signed by the U.S., and the leaders hope it will offer incentives for U.S. energy companies to work with the Mexican state oil company, Pemex, to develop resources.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said: 'With this, we are setting aside the old fear that honestly exists among many Mexicans that Mexico’s oil could be extracted from the other side. Any joint reservoir will be jointly exploited.'

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar called the agreement an historic step that 'opens to door to previously off-limits areas in the Gulf of Mexico', Bloomberg reported.
It seems we can enter into such historic deal with the Mexicans, but we are somehow unable to control the flow of people coming from the south.  Oh, and why do U.S. energy companies need incentives to deal with a state owned Mexican company?
