Technology / OnePlus Phones
« on: September 26, 2019, 06:54:07 AM »
OnePlus has a reputation for making flagship level phones at mid-tier prices.  I strongly recommend them for your next phone.

I bought a OnePlus 6T a few months ago, and it's easily the best phone I've owned.  From both a hardware and software perspective, they've gotten everything right.

The 7T is coming out soon.  They're having a live stream "reveal" event this morning at 10:30 East, 7:30 West.

It can be seen live here:

Random Topics / Infamous MV/Falkie Laptop Auction Thread
« on: November 16, 2018, 04:02:03 AM »
Hi!  I'm Liberace!

I used to go by MV on this forum until that display name was sullied by some slack jawed stroke victim.  Back in my storied "MV days," I sent Falkie2013 (A.K.A. George Senda, Mac user) a Windows laptop with new keyboard, new SSD, additional RAM, and a clean Windows 10 installation.  The laptop was intended to be used in getting Senda started with a podcast on, and since I know next to nothing about MacOS, this seemed like a better way forward if my help were going to be involved.  I only asked that Senda pay for shipping and the new computer components.  Otherwise, it was free.  He never paid me back, but that's a minor detail.

Fast forward a week, and Senda became angry with me because I didn't respond quickly enough to his tech support demands.  In response to his angry IMs, I unceremoniously told Senda, "Go fuck yourself."  The podcast never happened and the laptop collected dust in his hovel.

someone convinced Senda I'd modified the laptop to spy on him 24/7 in his government funded apartment.  His mind went into a tailspin, with the delusion evolving and expanding to the point he became convinced the laptop had cross contaminated his mobile devices, his router, his Mac, and even his ethernet cables.  Yes, even his ethernet cables.

Well, the good news is Falkie2013 (A.K.A. George Senda, Mac user) now understands the improbable, impractical, and entirely unfounded nature of these accusations against me and has agreed to auction this legendary piece of computing hardware to the highest bidder, right here on BellGab.  All proceeds of this auction will be donated to charity (TBA).

Here's the item up for bid:

The winner of this auction will own the single most coveted piece of BellGab memorabilia in existence.  Painstakingly disassembled and rebuilt personally by me and subsequently owned by BellGab's Falkie2013 (A.K.A. George Senda, Mac user), this laptop's central position in BellGab lore is rivaled by no other physical item.  Even the Genesis Device becomes an afterthought when the undeniable mystique and intrigue of this laptop are considered.

You may place your bids in this thread beginning now.  Starting bid is $200.00.  Bids may be placed in $10 increments.  The auction will continue until 12:01AM on December 15, 2018.  Happy bidding!

How To Use BellGab / Error Message
« on: January 11, 2018, 08:52:56 PM »
I'm getting the following error when creating new threads:

syntax error, unexpected 'll' (T_STRING), expecting ')'

When you see the error after submitting a new thread, don't worry.  Your new thread has been posted.  You won't have to type it all over again.  It's just that you'll have to navigate to the newly created thread rather than being taken immediately to it.

There error is also occurring when I do other seemingly unrelated things in the admin panel.

I don't know why this is happening, and I'm working on it...

Random Topics / Damon: Troll Victim
« on: December 18, 2017, 06:41:14 AM »
BellGabber Damon seems to get trolled a lot. I see people lobbing shit at him in the Falkie thread, he was one of the principal targets during the short lived guest posting experiment, etc... so many examples of it.

He's different, but inoffensive and agreeable overall.  Is there something sinister about him that I've overlooked? Is he running a puppy farm outside of Bakersfield?

Random Topics / Looking For A New "Top Right" Chooser
« on: October 24, 2017, 01:06:35 PM »
As everyone is aware, the top right corner of this website features witty or funny quotes from user posts.  It's a BellGab innovation that goes back years and is now being emulated by other forums.  The power of BellGab!

A few days ago I received word that the person who was responsible for selecting quotes has passed away.  I'd tell you who that is, but I was specifically asked by this person, who knew death was imminent, not to reveal that information.  What a BellGabber.

While the delicate candle of life sadly has been supplanted by the abyss that is death's darkness, life must go on for the rest of us.  That's why I'm here today searching for a willing volunteer who can dutifully select our top right quotes going forward.  Here is what you need to know:

1) A quote and a direct link to the post containing it should be submitted via PM every two days.
2) Nobody can know you are doing this.  If your identity in this role is revealed, you'll be forced to resign your position in shame.
3) Quotes should be short and fit neatly in the corner because long quotes will wrap into multiple lines and look awful.
4) As often happens, users will "nominate" a quote for the top right corner.  If a quote has been recommended or "nominated," it is immediately disqualified.

5) Quotes should be submitted one at a time.  Do not submit multiple quotes at once.

If you're interested in taking on this weighty but prestigious responsibility, do not express that interest in this thread.  Doing so will disqualify you.  Instead, send me a private message and explain in one sentence why you're the right person for the job.  You will only receive a response if you are selected by the Vandeven Enterprises™ board of directors.

Random Topics / Should the "Ignore User" feature be reinstated?
« on: August 08, 2017, 02:03:40 PM »
The feature was disabled because I believe nobody really benefits when vast swaths of written interaction can be permanently hidden due to personal preference. I think everyone should be compelled to occasionally read things they don't like.

Thoughts? Vote in the poll above. Thank you.

How To Use BellGab / Attaching Images Disabled
« on: July 08, 2017, 04:30:54 AM »
Just a heads up to let you know the forum will no longer support attaching images to posts.  This is in an effort to conserve hard drive space on the server.

You can continue including images in your posts, and it's easy to do.  If the desired image exists on the internet, simply insert the image's URL into your post like this:
Code: [Select]

If the desired image is located only on your computer/device (meaning no image URL is available), you can upload the image to a free image sharing service like Imgur, TinyPic, or countless others.  After the desired image is uploaded to the sharing service, its URL can be pasted into your post as shown above.

Technology / Back up all of your computer's drivers.
« on: March 14, 2017, 03:14:17 PM »
The utility is called Double Driver.

Download this zip file:

Extract it, and run dd.exe.
Click Backup.
Click Scan Current System.
Checkmark each system device driver you'd like to back up.  Might as well select them all.
Click Back Up Now.

You can choose to have the drivers backed up as a series of structured and uncompressed folders, a zip file, or a .exe file that will reinstall all of the drivers for you later.  A really cool utility.

Random Topics / Celebrity Death PREDICTIONS for 2017
« on: February 21, 2017, 09:59:35 AM »
It's time for a Celebrity Death PREDICTIONS thread.  For whatever reason, I'm often surprisingly accurate with this (and ONLY this) sort of prediction.  Unfortunately, there's no way to turn this into income.

So, make your celeb death predictions for 2017.

A) No more than ten celebrity predictions per user.  Anything more than that, and you're just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.

B) It is perfectly acceptable to repeat the prediction of someone else.

C) Place all of your predictions in one post.

D) The person with the most accurate predictions will be marginally celebrated and possibly awarded free Turbo Mode for a period not to exceed five days.

My list:
1) Loretta Swit
2) Fats Domino
3) Ginger Baker
4) Malcom Young
5) Paul Simon
6) Tom Sizemore
7) Robert Duvall
8 ) Bill Clinton
9) Leo Laporte
10) Henry Kissinger

Random Topics / A Great Kitchen Trash Can
« on: December 26, 2016, 09:34:36 PM »
This is a great kitchen trash can:

While that's not the container's intended use, it has everything you'd want. Smells are locked in, it's very tall yet stable so there's more time between bag changes, and the opening is almost a foot away from the actual trash which keeps things cleaner. $9 at Target.

I give it 5 stars.

« on: September 29, 2016, 11:06:46 PM »
I started watching the first episode of the new MacGyver series, and couldn't finish it.  The main character looks smug and unsympathetic, the pacing is slow, and it's full of gaping technical holes/rubbish.

I didn't finish the episode.  I couldn't take any more.  This is the scene where I punched out:

Technology / Sold his $60 Billion Apple share for $800.
« on: September 22, 2016, 01:33:16 AM »
Ronald Wayne

Ronald Gerald Wayne (born May 17, 1934) is a retired American electronics industry worker. He co-founded Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) with Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, providing administrative oversight for the new venture. He soon, however, sold his share of the new company for $800 US dollars, and later accepted $1,500 to forfeit any claims against Apple (in total, equivalent to $9,185 in 2015). As of April 2016, Wayne's 10% stake in Apple Inc. would be worth almost $60 billion.

Oof.  That's gotta sting.

I wanted to recommend an alternative way of donating to BellGab rather than simply clicking the "Donate!" button and handing over your money.  Google AdWords is a great way to help the forum.  You can buy ads to send traffic our way.  It'll help the forum in the long run by increasing impressions of our ads, it'll bring new user input our way which makes for a more interesting BellGab experience, and you can feel like you've helped in a truly meaningful way.  Everybody comes away happy.  So please consider buying ads for BellGab out there.
