In Soccer football must one be not behind defender when ball is kicked, or lands?

If you didn't have the offside rule, teams would just leave players hanging around the opposition goal and it would end up like ping pong, with them basically whacking the ball from one end to the other.

No, SV, i understand the need for, and the concept of, offsides, I just cannot follow in Soccer, Football when a play is, or, is not offsides. One cannot be behind the defender when, when ball is kicked?  At any place on field, pitch?

This is basically all that most of the world have. No MLB, NFL, NHL, AND it only occurs every 4 years. I just wish they wouldnt "flop" so much, i.e. Neymar. He's worse than anyone in the NBA.
I actually think it is a brilliant display of athleticism, endurance, stamina and heart.  With sometimes amazing drama, i.e. Germany's tying goal last weekend in extra time.
