Also listen to C2C as well as many of the other shows from time to time. It's more the guests or topics that is the draw for me instead of the host. All hosts have their good points and bad points. Looking back on some of the negative posts about GN, it seems like an obsession of hate rather than a factual dislike. IMHO the continued rants are not deserved. It was refreshing to hear Dave give recognition and kind words to GN and C2C on his new show. Everyone should listen for themselves and make up their own minds.

There was a time (10+ years ago) when I started to become really annoyed with GN and his various catchphrases like "Do you believe in angels?" that would come out of the blue and be totally non-sequitur when the guest was in the middle of a train of thought.  And I found this site with a +"George Noory sucks" internet search.  At the time, Art Bell was consigned to semi-retirement with the promise that he'd do the occasional show on C2C from time to time.  But we'd be waiting for several months in between his appearances.  I guess now GN is sort of OK.

But with Art Bell having left us, what is really the point of hating on GN in perpetuity?  Even when he was alive, AB's comebacks were rather short-lived.  Now there is a controversy regarding Heather and about who represents the true Art Bell legacy.  I don't really feel like reading through hundreds of forum posts to be caught up with all of the drama.  For good or ill, C2C is the "real legacy", even if it's original creator disavowed and attacked it's new owners in his later years.  C2C has a large network on terrestrial radio with a lot of inertia.

Maybe I'll give the current incarnation of MITD a listen someday.  To me though, MITD/C2C/Heather are all chasing after the same audience for all things paranormal.  There's only so much of my own time that I can invest and listen to these things.  The internet has done quite a bit in fracturing audiences--we have television shows that have viewership levels of less than one million that get renewed even though these types of TV ratings would have meant immediate cancellation by the networks only 20 years ago.

I just read the previous page, and saw the announcement that the next GabCast would feature Dave Schrader himself.

Sounds like it will be a great show and I'm looking forward to it.

I listened to the Gabcast with Vincent shortly after it came out.  It was interesting to listen to, and I'm ambivalent about how I'm supposed to feel about Art Bell, someone who I have a lot of fond memories of listening to back in the day.  I understand that the controversy regarding Art being estranged from some of his children was something that had been publicized a few years ago, but this was the first time I actually became aware of some of the details.

I'm still a fan of Art Bell and his work.  No man is an angel, and most people are a mixed bag.  There's a saying that goes like "Trust the art, not the artist".  Even with the controversies regarding Art Bell quitting his latest coming out of retirement only to quit again, I had always hoped that as long as he remained alive that he would someday come back on the air to do what he does best.  I was really hoping that he'd bury the hatchet with Premiere/C2C and just become an occasional host there again.  On his last run on MITD, I really enjoyed listening to Art Bell every night and it felt just like back in the 1990s when I lived alone in my apartment, unable to sleep and I'd listen to all these interesting discussions on ghosts and aliens.

-------------------------------

So I tend to be a casual lurker on Bellgab, and I don't really have the patience to read everything that gets posted here.  Would MV and the rest of the gang be willing to host a GabCast where they discuss the controversy regarding the legacy of Art Bell and who is the true "Midnight in the Desert"?  I stopped listening to MITD altogether when Art quit in late 2015.  In spite of how people feel about George Noory, I still listen to C2CAM when I work at night and I feel that they are the most credible broadcaster for all things interesting and paranormal.

Does George Noory still suck?  Well, I don't hate him as much as I used to.  And the weekend hosts on C2C are usually pretty good.  GN's appearances on the GabCast have done much to humanize him and make him more accessible.  He sounds like a far better conversationalist when he is playing off of MV.  I know that MV is skeptical of all things paranormal, but he might make an interesting occasional host on C2C or Dark Matter's MITD.

He's not setting new records for suckiness, but I think all we're getting is fluctuations in his degree of suck.I disagree.  I think George Knapp is in the same ballpark as, and Ian Punnet was slightly better than, the late Mr. Bell.  And I've heard others who may have been too good for overnight.

Ms. Wade started out about as good as Mr. Noory, but because of her interest in the subject matter, got better.  Yet her program's still not as good as most of the others on DMDN.  Maybe it's unfair comparing her show to shorter ones, and comparing her & Mr. Noory as single interviewers to panel shows.  Hell, for that matter, I don't know how good Mr. Noory might be if he did programs on material he was really interested in -- which is what I thought he'd wind up doing when Mr. Bell said Mr. Noory would take the program in his own directions, but unfortunately it seems he didn't.

I certainly agree that George Knapp is the man and by listening to him for a few minutes followed by Noory, it’s pretty self evident who should really be the full time host.

So why can’t the producers of C2C see that?

I didn't say I liked him, only that he is light years ahead of the bimbo.

I listened for the guests despite him, and thought he was unintentionally hilarious - until it wasn't worth it anymore

I’ve been listening to The Jorch for these past few weeks and I found him at least more tolerable.  But there was a time where I despised him outright, especially when he’d ask out of the blue: “Do you believe in angels?”

He hasn’t asked that question in recent history, has he?

But I think MV’s interview with GN a few years back has at least humanized him somewhat.

Ew.

In other news,

R. Lee Ermey, a Golden Globe-nominated actor best known for his role as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, has died.

Ermey, whose nickname was "The Gunny," died Sunday morning from complications of pneumonia. He was 74.

I loved that movie.  His performance inspired me to join the military (albeit, the Canadian one).  However, what looks hilarious on the movie screen depicting the rigours  of basic training is a lot less funny when it happens to you.  My master corporal was a humourless asshole who screamed like a demonic banshee without any of the panache and wit of the Great Gunny.  He flipped my bunk bed after finding an eyebrow hair while yelling “THERE IS A F****ING PUBE IN YOUR BED!!!!! YEEAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!’” during morning inspection at one point.

20+ years later, I still fantasize about going to his house in the dead of night and giving him a blanket party raining down several blows with a hockey stick.

I guess my anecdote about military basic training is hilarious looking back in retrospect.

Thanks for sharing.  Kinda weird/sad that Art turned into a Trumper at the end since it flies in the face of his career spent as a critical thinking skeptic.  Old age gets us all, I s'pose.

If he supported Hillary, I’m certain you’d be singing his praises.

It shouldn’t surprise anybody that he was in the Trump camp.  He was cheering for Pat Buchanan back in 1996.

But still, Art Bell was a social moderate and believed in Global Warming so you liberals can find solace in that ;)

Postings from Heather's facebook:

Ouch.  Well, I for one think that it was totally apt and appropriate for George Noory to announce Art Bell’s death after it was more or less public information.

I know this forum was originally the George Noory haters club, but in fairness to George, I think he has improved over the past few years.

The problem is that Noory and all of those who tried to succeed Art Bell are not Art Bell.  He is a once in a generation talent that cannot be replaced.

Heather and Keith are lashing out and from my perspective, I wouldn’t be doing that.  But they were close to Art Bell and dedicated a lot of their time to his legacy these past few years.  The death of a loved one tends to bring out a lot of raw emotions and I’ve seen the best and worst come out in these  situations. We all grieve differently.

I was one of those people who was disappointed when Art Bell stopped doing Midnight in the Desert.  And I did express skepticism about the stalker incident here.  With his death, I now feel badly about that.  In fairness, I was a fan and I wanted Art Bell to keep doing his show forever.

RIP.

I'm sad to hear of Art Bell's passing.

I was quite thrilled when he did Midnight in the Desert  back in 2015, even if it was just for a few months.  It felt like just back in the 1990s when I would listen to his show all night long in my apartment while I had trouble falling asleep.

So what would it take for Art Bell to come back?

Is Art Bell's stalker still stalking him?

John Titor was a hoax, obviously.  Off the top of my head, he made 3 major predictions that never came to pass:

1) There would be Waco-style government crackdowns every month starting in 2004 (start of a US civil war)
2) The olympics would be canceled in 2008
3) There would be a nuclear war in 2015 where Russia would vaporize a lot of major US cities.

The last one should put to rest any claims that JT was the real deal.

I hate to say this, but I agree.  Art has officially burned all of his bridges of support... how could he possibly come back from this, even if he wanted to?  He's betrayed so many loyal fans.  His Facebook page is a joke, it's an echo chamber of brainless following fools, but perhaps that's what makes him feel better about all of this.  I think we'd rather just listen to reruns from the 90's and early 2000's and act like Art never came back.

The most shocking thing of all is the amount of respect I have now gained for Noory just because he fucking shows up to work every night.   He may have the conversation skills of a brick wall, but at least the motherfucker shows up and I've learned recently how rare of a skill that seems to be.

George Noory is mediocre, but he is reliable.

Art Bell is a radio genius but completely unreliable.  That people are surprised he bailed out on his current internet show given his past history, is rather surprising.

Personally, I could probably stand George Noory more if he just hosted occasionally on weekends while a better host took the reins during the weeknights for C2C.

A lot of people thought Art Bell should have hired armed security in order to deal with his stalker.

Personally, I think it would have been better if he took a couple of weeks off while calling in 15-30 minutes to his show every day while Heather is hosting.  This would have kept sustaining interest in the show while grooming Heather as a viable replacement host when such circumstances dictate that one is needed.

I think it's much better to keep your powder dry so to speak before pulling the plug completely.

You can save DMDN by simply having Art Bell appear on MITD for 15-30 minutes every night.  He can just call in using Skype from a personal computer in his home (no need to physically walk over to the guest house studio where he'd be away from his family).

While the above scenario is not as ideal as having Art host MITD regularly, you at least have a carrot and stick situation to keep a sizeable audience for MITD.

Having Art Bell as a part time host on C2C AM kept me tuning in because Art Bell was still a semi-active part of that Universe.  He was even able to fill in unexpectedly when Jorch suddenly needed a day off.

I wouldn't say weird, it just got off track a bit.

I probably got a bit too personal, and in retrospect, I probably shouldn't have posted my last message.  Some things I keep in the back of my mind and it simmers for a while, and then something sets it off (like attacking Art Bell for marrying "so soon" after his wife had passed away, which hit it a little bit on me).  I probably just needed to vent a little and that's it.

Didn't mean to hijack or digress the thread.

I have always wondered what really happened to his wife, who goes to marry someone else 3 months later??

I started dating 3 months after my first wife passed away.  I was still relatively young at the time and with no children.  Me and my wife did everything together and to suddenly lose your significant other leaves a huge void.

It caused some controversy with her friends and family, but most of the people I knew weren't giving me a lot of time to talk and hang out with them to begin with (they were too busy).  So I went on a series of many awkward first dates with women (for the sake of having people to interact with) until I met my current wife who I married 2 years after my wife passed away.

Is getting married 3 months after your wife passed away a bad thing?  Maybe it is fast for some, but I'm not going to pass judgment because I have been judged harshly for "dishonoring" my wife's memory by some people who I thought were supposedly good friends.

We all grieve differently.

Just listened to the recording of last night's Gabcast - thanks for doing it.
I agree with Jazmunda that I wish Art hadn't been too hasty and had instead started with a hiatus period (weeks?) rather than an  immediate abrupt termination announcement. Better to keep the infrastructure (affiliates, advertisers, etc) intact for awhile just in case?

Reminds me very much of the night back on Oct 13, 1998 when Art abruptly mentioned at the end of a live c2c show (at almost 4am PT back then) "what you're listening to right now is my final broadcast on the air"
I was falling asleep listening in bed to that show at that time, but something shook me awake in time to hear that.
Same exact feeling in my stomach as back then...

I also remember listening to that episode live as well.

Bell served in the U.S. Air Force as a medic during the Vietnam War and in his free time operated a pirate radio station at Amarillo Air Force Base. He would make a point of playing anti-war music (like "Eve of Destruction" and "Fortunate Son") that was not aired on the American Forces Network.

This wife Ramona died from an "Asthmatic Attack", and the former "medic" couldn't help her.
Then, Off to the Philippines for the newer model !

As a widower, I take exception to this.  When you are married for so such a long time, having your wife die suddenly creates a huge void.  We all grieve differently.

When this latest show was announced I remember someone in a thread making a post predicting this happening.

Their theory was somewhere along the lines that with every return art makes he gets pumped up and excited about returning and loves the drama of sharing hints and ideas as the show builds up momentum for an eventual start date. He announces it falls through, its back up, its twisting in the wind, a new solution has been found, theres no way we can do it, its not manageable,  wait, we figured it out, the show will go on.........spread the word, call affiliates, subscribe today, report the pirates.........etc etc.

He forgets one thing, once he is back there night after night doing the show, its not long before he remembers it really dragged him down over time and affected everything around him. Then one day for some reason whatever drama is happening that particular day and has built up boils over and he abruptly quits.

Then he slowly starts it all over again with little hints of a possible comeback. He misses it and wants to come back because he misses the excitement of it all and slowly starts to want it all over again, forgetting the negatives it caused him. Like taking back an old girlfriend, remembering all the great times and forgetting all the bad times until you are back with her and realize that you cant handle it for long..

It might be true, he loves every part of the show except doing it for long periods of time and at his age it probably takes more of a toll than it ever did before. When he is planning it and putting it together he is loving it, building studios, finding partners, planning formats and all that jazz. He forgets in all that excitement that once back behind the mic every night its gonna be the same it always was and he will look for an out. Doesnt mean to say he is making the story up, but its something he can grab and pull the chute with that explains leaving.

Art Bell has a previous history of abruptly quitting his show many times in the past.  Whether it's a personal crisis, desire for retirement or issues with the corporate heads screwing him, to long time listeners of the show, Art quitting is par for the course.

I'll just say this: while it is bad that his family is being stalked, he could have taken a temporary leave of absence (and make short appearances while Redacted hosts the show) until all of this was sorted out.  He has worked for 2 years creating and launching MITD.  Is it really worth it to just throw it all away?

I don't think any radio affiliates would ever go back with Art Bell considering all the history with him.

I really think that his heart is not in it anymore.  The stalker thing was basically an out that he could use to make his exit.  I think it would have been better for Art Bell to just say that he wanted to retire.

Well, I am surprised that MITD lasted as long as it did to be honest.  I had a lot of fun listening to the new episodes.  I'm still a fan nonetheless.

Well, I was quite pessimistic that Art Bell would successfully launch his show at all back in July.  We got 5 months worth of new Art Bell shows compared to 6 weeks when he was with Sirius XM back in 2013.

This is not the first time that Art Bell has abruptly quit his radio show. Like I stated on this forum and once on the Gab Cast: Art Bell is a highly talented but unreliable radio personality.  George Noory, in spite of his mediocrity, is reliable.

It's terrible that Art Bell has a stalker trying to kill his family.  Art Bell must have the worst luck in the world.
#22
I'm listening too the show live on a Greyhound bus with wifi right now.

I'm a long time lurker here.  I must admit that I was a bit skeptical that Art Bell would pull off his internet based radio show successfully, especially considering all if the ups and downs of the past 15 years that he's had with Premiere and SiriusXM.  I thought that Art was a highly talented but unreliable personality considering his multiple retirements and unretirements.

That he's been able to pretty much work nonstop for the past four months largely uninterrupted is evidence that perhaps corporate radio is at fault here for all of Art Bell's troubles in the past.  I have to reconsider that whenever I thought Art Bell might have been unreasonable or erratic that it was perhaps the higher ups' mistreatment of him that brought out the worst in Art Bell.

Congratulations to Art Bell for making Dark Matter a success and for his making the best shows he's done in years.  Art Bell could make reading from a McDonald's menu sound like The most interesting thing in the world, he is that good.

Bill Gates would be a great guest, love him or hate him.  And I'm also a Linux user myself.

One of my favorite episodes of C2C was the one where Art interviewed that Silicon Valley techie "Captain Crunch" who knew Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs.  He had taken the time and initiative to figure out how to use a whistle from a box of Captain Crunch to hack the AT&T payphones to make free long distance calls.  He is a very smart guy.
