New Zealand warns of exploding whale carcasses after mass stranding

Just imagine how surprised everyone will be if it turns out that the lost chamber of King Tut's tomb is filled with sarcophagi containing the mummified remains of the once sacred, but now sadly extinct, Nile River pilot whales.

We should have a thread dump for general news items. Quirky items in the news should be for "quirky" items.

Breaking this thread in then:

Playboy Magazine is bringing back the titties.

I almost went with some friends as someone pulled out in the last minute. Glad I didn't give them an overpriced cent.

Maybe they should have died before they got old. Actually, it's pretty amazing that they didn't.

It was pretty phenomenal - and I say that as someone who only was a casual fan of theirs. Wolfmother as the supporting act, and Angus Young from ACDC played guitar for a couple of songs. I think the crowd was probably 75000.

Honestly I think the media is misreporting the whole thing, because the crowd seemed to take it as more of a joke or with confusion more than anything.

Quote 13 pounds of horse genitals concealed in woman's luggage; claimed it was for medicinal purposes

On January 29, two women arrived from Mongolia. Customs and Border Protection officers sent them for a routine agriculture examination. The women had a combined 42 pounds  (19.05kg) of horse meat concealed inside juice boxes. That includes 13 pounds (5.8kg) of horse genitals that one of the women claimed were for medicinal purposes.

Horse meat is prohibited from entering the country unless the traveler has an official government horse meat certification from the country of origination. The concern is bringing foot and mouth disease into the United States and introducing it to livestock here.
All of the meat was incinerated.

QuoteBill Gates warns tens of millions could be killed by bio-terrorism

Gates, making his first appearance at the Munich security conference on Saturday, said: “Whether it occurs by a quirk of nature or at the hand of a terrorist, epidemiologists say a fast-moving airborne pathogen could kill more than 30 million people in less than a year. And they say there is a reasonable probability the world will experience such an outbreak in the next 10 to 15 years.”

He added: “It’s hard to get your mind around a catastrophe of that scale, but it happened not that long ago. In 1918, a particularly virulent and deadly strain of flu killed between 50 million and 100 million people.

“You might be wondering how real these doomsday scenarios really are. The fact that a deadly global pandemic has not occurred in recent history shouldn’t be mistaken for evidence that a deadly pandemic will not occur in the future. And even if the next pandemic isn’t on the scale of the 1918 flu, we would be wise to consider the social and economic turmoil that might ensue if something like ebola made its way into urban centres.”

“Getting ready for a global pandemic is every bit as important as nuclear deterrence and avoiding a climate catastrophe. Innovation, cooperation and careful planning can dramatically mitigate the risks presented by each of these threats.”

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation published an Ipsos Mori poll saying that 71% of Britons aged between 16 and 75 are more concerned about the spread of infectious diseases such as Ebola or Zika than war with other nations. Just over two-thirds said they were concerned about war, while 83% said violent terrorist attacks were their main concern.

I think the real danger is not to the western world so much as the third world and places like China. 30mil might sound like a lot, but consider that the population of the Pearl River Delta (Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, etc) alone is ~42mil and projected to grow to 80mil by 2030, while Lagos and Delhi are each ~21mil.

What if you threw a thread and they changed the title. This is an outrage! I cry for the children! Let those people go! I'm ready for baseball!
