In defence of callers it can be nerve racking getting on the air and sometimes small talk like that can calm you. It's also hard not to attempt to have that small talk with a guy you have been listening to for 20 years and never spoken to. It might not be interesting to the listeners but in the moment it's hard for the individual calling not to take their perhaps one chance to talk to someone they admire.
