The thing that really denotes where the game is for me is watching Jake Virtanen enter the league. In juniors Virtanen was a big tough guy power forward with a reputation for physical play. In the prospect games he was running around like a maniac tough guy and even blasted McDavid at one point. His first NHL pre-season game he was running around like a tough guy when one of the opposing defensemen gave him a dirty trip which sent him sailing painfully into the boards. Virtanen was pretty quiet after that. Point being, it's a cheap shot league now.

pretty much and no real repercussions  for them

That's pretty much the end of his career. Can't see him getting another contract, especially coming back from a major surgery. Too bad in a way, the NHL is becoming so pussified that Raffi was one of the last of a dying breed.

There is a difference between tough physical play and cheap shots.  I'm sick of the cheap shot artists and am happy they suspended this ass-clown for half the season.  My rule would be if someone is injured on an illegal hit, the perp wouldn't play until the injured player was able to come back and be at full strength, or the length of the suspension, whichever is longer.

I would love to see this stuff treated as assault and battery and have the officials have the cops drag these guys off the field/ice/court in handcuffs, and some judge throw the book at them.  Fuck 'em.

Sounds like someone gave him what he had coming.  To me that's not a cheap shot, it's what's now referred to as a 'teachable moment', and protecting their teammates from this nutcase.

If the officials won't take care of the problem, the players should.  As in football, the players are now so much bigger, faster, stronger.  The collisions are more damaging to the human body.  The players are entertainers at the top of their profession, watched by millions, important to the success of their team.  There is no reason for stars and other valued players to be sidelined because some pos hack decided to plaster them.  It's bullshit.

I'm an La Kings fan back to the days of Dionne.
Love seeing Torres get his punishment. Fuckin' Fins.
Living in Nashville I try to get out to the arena when the Kings are in town. Otherwise I can't stand setting foot in that place.
Preds hockey has never clicked with me.

cweb

There's a clean way and a dirty way to hit. Seems like that line is being slowly erased as the NHL gets paranoid about their stars getting hurt. As youth hockey strays away from hitting, kids aren't learning how to do it "the right way" and you see more dirty hits.

I do miss the days of more physical hockey. Like the '99 Stanley Cup Finals between the Sabres and the Stars. Bodies flying everywhere. Some vicious hits as the OT games went on. Blood 'n guts hockey. Mike Modano said that he was glad the series ended when it did (I'm not!) because some guys including himself would not have been physically able to play a game 7.

Any other hockey fans out there?

I'm a Vancouver Canucks fan which means I'll probably completely lose interest in the NHL by December.

Why though?  Do you realize what a loser attitude that is?  Maybe that's part of the reason why the Canucks have never won the cup.  If the fans aren't tuning out while they're building a winning team, they're rioting and burning cop cars.   :D

Seriously though, I'm also a Canucks fan, but I grew up in Montreal watching the Canadiens kick everyone's ass year in and year out, and I can tell you something.  The best fans stick with their team through thick and thin.  And that leads to  winning teams.  Look at Detroit.  They were in the basement for years, but they constantly sold out.

The other thing is, in Montreal most fans are of course Habs fans, but they're really fans of the sport.  They watch it, they play it and they live it.  Not so much in Vancouver.  Some of the fans are great, but others want to make me puke.  (The rioters are a great example).  Clearly these people are NOT real hockey fans.

I, for one, look forward to the Canucks rebuild this year.  And I'll make a bold statement.  They WILL make the playoffs this season.  Check it out.

Does Benning have aspergers?

Uh, you do realize he's the guy who brought the Cup to Boston, right?

akwilly

I don't root for the Canucks because I went to a game there and granted it wasn't a playoff game or anything but it was boring to me. I used to go to the Tacoma T Birds games and they were the best sporting event I've been to live.

I'm aware he had a part in that.

I've also seen him in interviews. Which is why I ask.

GravitySucks

Tomorrow the Blackhawks begin their quest for a repeat. Against another original six team. Rangers.

I thought you were inferring that he's some kind of dummy, which is why I replied the way I did.

I highly doubt he's stupid. otherwise he wouldn't be where he is.  Frankly, after all the crap that's gone on in this city with its hockey team, I think Vancouver fans are lucky to have him.  Most people around the league don't have a ton of respect for the management crew over there at Canucks Sports & Entertainment.

If things keep going the way they have been, it's gonna be tougher and tougher to get the good players to want to come play here.

There's a well-known theme here at Rogers Arena where the folks in the lower bowl are generally corporate types who aren't very vocal and they don't particularly enjoy it when the rowdier fans start yelling and screaming.  It fits right in with the "no fun city" theme of Vancouver.  It gets pretty tiring when you pay $200 for a ticket and the people around you are a bunch of dorks who don't know or enjoy hockey as much as you do (as I was alluding to with the "corporate) comment, they probably got their tickets for free) and they turn around and glare at you when you yell out to the players because there was an exciting play.

More than once I've said to the wife, "What the hell is it with these people??  Do they think they're at the library?"

So yeah, I get you man.  Been there done that, many times.

You are right on. I got my tickets from a salesman and they were in the "corporate" area. It sucked. At the Tbirds games I would pay 15 bucks and sit right on the glass. Also it was weird but I would look around and would notice there were more girls at the games then guys. They all had blond hair and wore leather jackets. I would get to drink ass loads of beer and when the game was over everyone would walk over to the spaceneedle and have a blast.

I've experienced the same phenomena, especially at soccer games at some European clubs. The good side is that much of the time the football and baseball, here, is so hot that the rich suits need skyboxes. But I've noticed a troubling trend even with "amateur" sports, especially football, that the student sections have been decimated and divided up and everything is going for alumni/big-donor. And replacing fan volume with artificial volume (comment recently was "wtf is this a minor league hockey team" when a techno-beat song was played over the loudspeakers. And I love minor league hockey but you know what I mean.

Me neither. He's obviously done great things before. Just seemed a bit aspy when communicating with other people. I've seen the question raised quite a few times. I'm mostly excited about his ability to scout players tbh. Everyone knows we've sucked at drafting.

Yeah, it's been rough in the scouting area for the past few years.  In fact Vancouver's struggled a lot over the past couple decades in terms of top management talent in general.  They've had a better caliber of coach than managers, that's for sure.  But with its faults it's a good hockey city overall.  The fans are into it and they want a winner.

Honestly I think Benning is fine in terms of mental health.  He's just boring.  Plain and simple.  He'll fit right in in Vancouver with that flat personality.  LOL.  yeah, I don't hold my punches.  sorry.

Good looking game tonight so far.  Love seeing Hansen score and how about Sutter picking that puck out of the air like he was using a fly swatter?  Yeah, that is how it's done.  SO FAR SO GOOD.

 ??? ...Okay

Anyway, Kings gonna be Kings.

And Brown threw a gnarly looking headbutt on Couture tonight.

Couture should have gone for the full sunset flip.
Glad to see there's at least one Kings player with some fire from last night.

Sean Avery arrested and cited for varius prescriptions and throwing things at cars; days before wedding. Then he tweeted out his med list. Strange.

Yeah, I don't think any ever liked the guy- even when he was doing his antics on your team! Haha about the "marrying a woman" comment. Yah.

From the comments of that usmag article....

QuoteHe is taking 3 different kinds of drugs for pain, 2 to stay awake/alert, 1 for insomnia plus a sleeping pill. That's a full cycle of drugs he's using to basically function through the course of an entire day. Makes you wonder what else he could possibly be taking (e.g. what's been redacted)...

QuoteHe's taking an antibiotic, cialis for his libido and a laxative. You can look up the NDC code pretty easy. If he didn't want people knowing, he should have blacked that out too. He's an idiot. I hope he doesn't take the cialis and laxative at the same time. That won't be pretty

QuoteHe's prolly taking the laxative due to constipation from the opiates use. Plain and simple---dude's a mess.

Yeah, I'm very confused as to what the reason was to twitter his medlist? To show that he had prescriptions for said drugs? A desperate plea for help? Something done while drunk/high and accidentally tweeted out to the world? With a list like that he is risking an "Elvis" situation, taking so much stuff for every normal activity is going to get you. (Waking up, going to sleep, having sex, taking a crap, etc and then throw in multiple pain pills.) And everyone loves Elvis, with him not many would shed a year but still...get some help dude. If not simply because it will put the NHL in a bad light (seen too many stories that start out "Former NHL player dies....")

He is a (negative) attention whore. After getting the boot from dancing with the stars he went on good morning america to say the producers didn't like him cause he refused to play the "bad boy" and that's the only reason he got voted out lol I remember randomly catching him on fashion police once... blech! He is so unlikable.

I never watched his off-ice and reality tv antics but hated him from his on-ice antics and style of play and manner. (He was the opposite of a good hockey player who when confronted with fashion should threaten to "whip it out and scare everyone hear except my wife" ala Slapshot when they made them model.) He was a cancer when we, for whatever reason, brought him to the Stars.

Eichel scores his first goal in his first game. Kane and Eichel looked absolutely filthy together. The Sabres were no joke tonight. Lehner picked up a knee injury which is unfortunate but some jerk stole him from me in my fantasy league draft, so screw him. :D (j/k Lehner is one of my favorite kids in the league)

McDavid has had a few flashes tonight but doesn't look too comfortable.
