The M14 was heavy and like the M1 Garand it was long. That's why it sucked. The M16A1 replaced it. I qualified Expert with both the M16A1 and the M16A2.

The angle of the mag was never an issue with the M16. The USMC did not begin "cross-training" with the AK47 until 1980. The sights were not an issue (as the sights on the Springfield) or the Garand. The issue with the M16A1 was the .223 (5.56 mm) round to replace the .308 or .306 and still have an auto capability within infantry squads.
