Now mandatory to wear masks in Melbourne any time you leave the house or face a fine of $200 from the police. They can also fine you $1600 if you are out for anything other than essential shopping, medical treatment, education, or work.

British Airways retires entire 747 fleet after travel downturn
QuoteBritish Airways has said it will retire all of its Boeing 747s as it suffers from the sharp travel downturn. The UK airline is the world's largest operator of the jumbo jets, with 31 in the fleet.

"It is with great sadness that we can confirm we are proposing to retire our entire 747 fleet with immediate effect," a BA spokesman told the BBC. "It is unlikely our magnificent 'queen of the skies' will ever operate commercial services for British Airways again due to the downturn in travel caused by the Covid-19 global pandemic," the spokesman added.

The 747s represent about 10% of BA's total fleet. It had planned on retiring the planes in 2024 but has brought forward the date due to the downturn.

Not particularly surprising. The writing has been on the wall for 4 (and 3) engined commercial jets for a long time now as they're too inefficient compared to 2 engined designs; the pandemic has just accelerated their phase out. Will possibly see similar moves with the A380 as although they're more efficient compared to the 747, they need to be fairly full to make a profit on flights.

This is a ship that was laid down in 1912, served in the Imperial Russian Navy, participated in the Russian Civil War, survived Leningrad and WW2, served in and outlasted the Soviet Union and subsequent chaotic collapse, and is still in service with Russian Navy.

Melbourne new case levels went from near zero a week or two ago to ~300per day yesterday, so the entire city (~5mil people) has gone back into lockdown and the state borders have been forcibly closed. Now you've got people in other states acting a bit smug over the current shitshow in Victoria, as though they themselves weren't guilty of earlier fuckups and potentially future ones.

5 engined 747-SP!
I think it would look better, and probably perform better with a 6th engine in a mirrored position on the Port side of the a/c.

Qantas has been known to ferry engines slung underneath the wings of their (now retired) 747s. Can't be that big of an extra fuel burn since they were able to do Perth - Johannesburg in that config according to this article:

Flu virus with 'pandemic potential' found in China
QuoteA new strain of flu that has the potential to become a pandemic has been identified in China by scientists.
It emerged recently and is carried by pigs, but can infect humans, they say.
The researchers are concerned that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person, and trigger a global outbreak.
While it is not an immediate problem, they say, it has "all the hallmarks" of being highly adapted to infect humans and needs close monitoring.
As it's new, people could have little or no immunity to the virus.

Current flu vaccines do not appear to protect against it, although they could be adapted to do so if needed.

Sometimes it's nice to go back and look at the high quality opinions media outlets choose to publish with the knowledge of hindsight:

QuoteVictoria will bring back tougher coronavirus restrictions in a bid to address a recent increase in case numbers. Mr Andrews has also deferred plans to allow more patrons in restaurants, and flagged the possibility of even tougher lockdowns being introduced in the hardest hit areas over the coming days.

He said that according to the Government's experts the numbers were being driven by families having big get-togethers and not following the advice around distancing and hygiene.

"Since April … half of all of our new cases have come from family-to-family transmission," Mr Andrews said.
"I'm frustrated by it. I'm disappointed by it.
"Unless we can break this cycle … then we are going to see more and more of these cases."

Borders between most states in Australia, with the exception of WA, are reopening.
WA seems intent on keeping their borders shut to the rest of the country and their premier is acting like a petulant child - even NZ is wanting to reopen borders with the rest of Australia while WA isn't.

There was a further development today, as South Australia reopened to all states except Victoria, Queensland, and New South Wales.
Caused this choice quote from the Victorian premier:

QuoteVictorian Premier Daniel Andrews said he was not concerned that South Australia would not reopen its borders to Victorians.

"I don't want to be offensive to South Australians but why would you want to go there?" he said

Yeah - that MLK statue isn't really freaky it is just some random guy.

I thought it was a Lenin statue until I looked closer.

Isn't there a Lenin statue in Seattle? London has Marx's giant bust that gets vandalised occasionally, but at least it's on his grave.

Why is there a statue of George Washington in Trafalgar Square?  Wouldn't imagine y'all would think too highly of the old boy.  Or is Russia Today just confused?  Or there are more than one George Washington?

Trafalgar Square is purely for the tourists - the statue is there to make American ones feel warm and fuzzy at the hospitality of the Britons.
