How to handle finding porn while doing private tech work

  In the course of most side jobs its required that I see what files people have and where they are.  Normally I ask my customer where all their stuff is that they want saved if it's a kill/reinstall type of situation.  Normally nobody knows where their files are so I have to at least peek in the "my pictures", "my documents", and whatever folders there are in the account.  Sometimes it's hard to ignore the large collections of porn but I usually have some sort of warning from the user.  Most guys that aren't married or attached just don't really care and they will even say things like "hey man I've got a ton of porn I want to keep."  Married guys usually explain the porn situation in a hushed voice since most wives frown upon it.  Sometimes it's just all out in the open and both the husband and wife have their own porn libraries.  Each situation is handled differently and I'm a pretty easy going guy so I normally explain how I really don't give a shit about what sick crazy monkeysex people are into.  Just tell me where the files are so I can move them... I don't judge... (sick bastards)


I did a first time job for this clerk at my local 711 yesterday.  Nice guy, Pakistani apparently, I thought he was Russian for some reason. He had no clue about where files were and his documents folder was empty so when I clicked on his pictures folder I figured I'd just find the usual sample pics or family stuff.  Nope,  this guy had one pic in his pictures folder and it was a giant closeup of what I'm assuming was his engorged member.


I really almost lost it... totally wasn't expecting that and his reaction was priceless.  He actually kind of shouted "Noooooo!" when it came up on the screen.  I quickly deleted it but neglected to do a hard delete in my scramble to get the penis off of the screen and so it went to the recycle bin..... Some of you can imagine what happened as a result of my folly here.


A few minutes later I emptied the recycle bin because if i see it's not empty I empty it.  It's a quirk of mine.  So, again... the penis shot resurfaced while windows asked if I really truly did not want to keep it.  The customer was quiet this time as I quickly clicked "yes" to permanently delete the pic.  A few seconds later I was given the explanation that "somebody" was using his computer.  hahaha yeah right!  dude obviously lived alone.  I'll never buy another hot dog at sev again.

funny you mention this.  My sister said she hopped I would notify the authorities if I happen to stumble upon something illegal.  I told her I was pretty sure the pedo's have their own tech people they use who are pedos too.

Call me paranoid, but if I found illegal (child) porn, I would delete it and say no more. Too easy for the authorities to try to charge you with possession if you report it.

i think that's an unlikely problem.  i'm running a professional business in commercial property dealing explicitly with fixing computers for the general public.  i believe the cops would get it.  i think someone running a business out of their home might be more likely to face those types of problems, though.

I will admit that for a while a few years ago I did a ton of video conversion of strictly porn dvd's for some dude that lived near my old apartment.  He was a normal guy, married w kids n shit he was just really into porn I guess.  So into porn that he needed access to it 24/7 on a hand held device I guess for emergency masterbation at work or something?  I didn't see any weird titles or anything mostly like penthouse n hustler type of stuff... While I did this project for him I would have hard drives full of the stuff and I didn't have the time to really look through all of it to make sure there weren't any kids getting assraped.

I don't know what the statute is in the USA; but in the UK anything connected to CP is treated with utmost seriousness. Having it on a computer is classed as making indecent images. Uploading (even accidentally) is deemed 'making' the image. Some of you may remember the pop 'icon' from the 70's known as Gary Glitter; real name Paul Gadd. He was caught with thousends of images by a techie who worked in a well known chain in the UK. Techie was tasked with fixing the PC, and found the evidence and reported it to the police. Gadd went to prison, and later went to the far east where later he was arrested, tried and imprisoned for sex with minor..He's now back in the UK, but has been arrested again recently for allegations related to the recent case regarding Jimmy Savile. Several years ago, Pete Townsend (Guitarist with the WHO) was arrested and is now on the sex offenders register because his computer had CP on it-his defence is/was that he was conducting research on CP, with a view to catching those who make it.. I don't know at what stage that particular case is at present. All the major police forces throughout the world liaise and collaborate information and go into the deep web to find and catch the criminals. One such case in the UK involved the UK police, FBI, Dutch and Australian police working together and apprehending suspects in all four countries. In the UK, the department that is tasked with this work is very deep cover, the operators never shown on TV when interviews are conducted with the department head, and the locations of where the ops rooms are secret. I expect it's the same elsewhere too.
