I missed this yesterday.

Like what?  Is this Deep State/Q Anon conspiracy stuff?  Not interested.  While I consider myself a skeptic, I have a hard time believing that rank and file public servants are in on some Illuminati-style plan to undermine the USA.  To what end?  So Clinton can have her chain of pizza places that traffic children?  No sale.  I don't fall for the far-fetched InfoWars baloney.

If you'd been paying attention you'd know that I think Alex Jones is a fucking idiot whose outlandish claims serve only to  obfuscate and discredit the actual facts that are now being confirmed by the steady flow of records being released including the declassified records of congressional hearings dropped yesterday.  Alex is a lot like the MSM when it comes to peddling bullshit. [/quote]

Quote from: Tinfoil_Helm on May 07, 2020, 12:21:39 PMIs that a question that lacks punctuation?  I'll assume it's a question.  Uhhh, you don't think Donald has done a job on the CIA and other intelligence orgs?  Trumpers don't even deny that.  He's been doing all manner of irregular things like giving weird political speeches in front of the Memorial Wall, withdrawing crucial spies from Russia, second-guessing the work of our intelligence in public, siding with our enemies, hiring and firing on a weekly basis, the list goes on.  If you need me to explain to you how Donald's relationship with the intelligence community is less than optimal... you have a LOT of catching up to do, haha.

Trump has every reason to distrust an intelligence community that was politicized by Obama and still has Obama loyalists among its ranks or didn’t you watch the bullshit impeachment proceedings.   He has this in common with Eisenhower, Kennedy and other Presidents who have been burned by the CIA of their day by blown calls, political sculpting of intelligence or misadventure.  You must be unaware of the role of Clapper and Brennan in putting the Country through 3 years of investigations costing millions of dollars and ruining a number of lives that had zero predicate and produced zero charges relating to Trump.  Look at the official documentation that has come out just in the past few days FFS.  The yarn you repeat about Trump revealing classified information and blowing the cover of intelligence assets has been repeatedly and publicly denied by those that were in the room and, in several instances, before Congress under oath.  You information is as stale as your thinking.  Ha ha.

Quote from: Tinfoil_Helm on May 07, 2020, 12:21:39 PMUh oh, now *I'm* a Deepfake too?!  Look man, just because we don't agree with every policy that comes down from the Executive, doesn't mean we're trying to undermine America.  It's pretty obvious that Donald bungled this from the outset, and even Conservative voices concede that we shoulda used our contacts in China.

The sentence in bold above is total horse shit.  Who are the contacts you are talking about that we’re not used?   Name the conservatives who have conceded this.

Fair criticism is fair criticism and I have no problem with someone disagreeing with me but I’ve lost patience with the terminally obtuse who refuse to acknowledge the facts and fall back on arguments and assertions that have been debunked time and time again on these boards and elsewhere.  Beyond that, I think that anyone that’s okay with the crimes that have been committed under the color of law and national security by government officials and the media that gives them cover because they don’t like Trump is a moral coward.  I would think the same of myself if the tables were turned and I failed to condemn the same illegal acts committed against a Democrat.

Greyhound!  A new WWII movie with Tom Hanks.

At the
36 second mark we see Hanks.  He's not a young fellah and his lady (whom we see at the 44 second mark) is not exactly in the bloom of youth either.  He has a officer's uniform on with two thick gold stripes on the sleeve sandwiching a thinner gold stripe.   I believe that indicates he's a Lieutenant Commander.  Which means at his age he must not have been too damn successful.   He does have a ring on his right hand - perhaps an Annapolis class ring?  The Skipper of my Dad's ship was a Commander and was an Academy man.  He graduated way down in his class which is probably why he was just a Destroyer Captain and was in his mid to late 30's at the time.  Hanks really should be about three decades younger but what the hell!

Hanks wears the two and a half stripes of a LCDR at the beginning of the trailer but is shown later with scrambled eggs on his visor which means that he was promoted to full commander.  Promotions in the military came very slowly between the wars.  (Eisenhower was a LCOL at the beginning of WWII and so was Patton.)  I don’t know how old Hanks is but the age of the character he portrays seems about right for that time.   A senior LCDR could easily be in the 35-40 age range.

Agree with your other observations.  It would appear that the submarine fired on was forced to surface and couldn’t man topside due to heavy fire or some kind of casualty.   If it did an emergency blow of main ballast tanks it would pop up like a cork and be a big surprise if it was in dead quiet mode beforehand.

The new frigates will be built at Fincantieri's shipyard in Wisconsin but it seems to me that awarding the contract to a foreign concern is not in keeping with Trump's MAGA aims and is a concession to globalism.  Also, I hope that the new frigates are a lot better than the Perry Class which had a lot of structural problems and were under gunned.  Frigate sailors didn't have much good to say about them.

Amen!

Seriously, though, it's how they handled old-school quarantine.  It will be fascinating to see how the balance between individual liberties and civic responsibility is struck in this political climate and how each side lines up.  I tend to think we value individual liberty higher than our ancestors and will do everything possible to preserve it, both by private action (not getting tested or cooperating) and publicly, but which party will champion the rights of coofers is anyone's guess.  Free ball!

Agree.  As of now it would appear that there are a lot more Ds using police state tactics but that might be because the Ds are running most large cities and 24 states.  We'll see.

The real danger of this whole thing is that citizens will be less inclined to believe the Government's/Expert's assessment of any future bugs that may show up that could be more virulent and deadly.  #PeterandtheWolf

Haha now we know the "contract tracers" are basically the Gestapo.  Demand for drive-up testing shrinks precipitously, case counts shrivel, nobody registers for the tracing app, and the whole thing ends with a whimper. Bored newly hired contract tracers prowl the streets at night listening for surreptitious, smothered coofing.  They will demand random testing next.

Are Americans working on our behalf in China (Stare Department, military, etc.) "blatantly corrupt"?

And to answer your question (while not agreeing with the premise), it's kinda hard to do your job when your "boss" has defanged you.  It's like a sports team that has traded away all their talent.  You can't expect the team to perform the same way.  (Unless you have Ricky Vaughn.)  It was especially disappointing to see after-the-fact that we WERE getting intelligence about the virus but it was just ignored.  Hell, even Peter Navarro tried to raise the alarm, and that guy has acquiesced to everything that Donald has asked.

It's a real letdown as someone who had higher hopes for this administration...

Judging by the performance of the State Department during the Obama Admin., I don't doubt that there are any number of corrupt career diplomats still serving in the State Department and overseas.  Exactly what "fangs" have been extracted.  Also, please cite any actionable intelligence concerning COVID-19 that was available that was not acted on by Trump as he was advised by the "experts."

It's the job of said civil servants to carry out the policies of the incumbent President not to pick and chose what they feel like doing.  If it is so disagreeable to them they always have the option of resigning.  Covertly working to undermine the President's policies is an act of subversion which there are laws against.

Why do I get the feeling that your "higher hopes" claim is just a tad disingenuous.

I feel like this is a non-partisan observation, so no need for the knee-jerk tribalism...

It's a shame we've been at war with the Intelligence Community these past couple years, because by some accounts we could've cut this off at the pass in China.  But no, Donald had to start shit with the foreign service, CIA, et al.  It's folly.

Makes no sense to have a government at war with itself.

What does Trump’s stand against the blatant corruption in the above organizations have to do with their doing the job they are paid to do?  Exactly how would China have been influenced to act otherwise with respect to the Corona Virus.  Maybe Trump should have allowed China to continue to rob us blind.

I’ve have landed in the Azores as a passenger maybe a half dozen times.  There always seems to be a strong crosswind which is not surprising since the Azores are a group of small islands stuck out in the Atlantic that are subject to the “Azores Current” that flows down from Newfoundland, but, judging by the amount of right rudder the pilot had to use, that was a particularly dicey landing.

As an aside I met Thor Heyerdahl once but I was young and it was perfunctory. I seem to recall some years ago some claims that New World chemicals (mainly cocaine, THC, and nicotine) was found in Egyptian mummies. Apparently they like to party and dance like an Egyptian. But then other sources couldn't validate the claim and it is "still controversial."
I'm no expert but I would think the mapping of the human genome, modern DNA- and other- testing of old bodies (and current) populations, and tracking crop hybridization and archeological remains that we could settle the questions of human migration patterns, origins of 'who are the real Joose,' Solutrean Hypothesis, all the rumors of offspring generations from certain famous people (Genghis Khan, Charlemagne, etc.) And even "prove" which Muzzies are real "Sayyid."

I agree, but, what if it turns out that one is a descendent of Quasimodo?  Some members of my extended family make me hesitant to go down that road.

I don't think that's quite what they're saying.  Genetic links to Polynesians have been suggested for a while going back at least to Kennewick Man who looked different from most of today's Indians, and a bunch of early skeletons from Mexico and Brazil.

The problem with thinking they crossed the widest expanses of the Pacific by boat is that settlement in the intermediate islands is very recent, Hawaii being less than 2000 years ago.  Instead, it is thought that the shared lineage represents a migration that circled the Pacific, definitely using boats but more following the coastlines around, from at least Taiwan (where modern Polynesians are thought to have originated) all the way up through the (once-connected) Alaska down to the tip of South America.  Not quite Kon Tiki in reverse but still impressive.

I do think some boats made it across the Pacific pre-Columbus (the introductions of chickens and some kind of tuber I forget representing the clearest evidence, one going one way and one going the other) but that was much more recent than this guy's ancestors.

Below is an excerpt from the Encyclopedia of New Zealand which is a quasi official publication of the NZ Government.

Reaching South America:

"Ultimately explorers (Polynesian/Maori) arrived at South America, and then returned to their home islands in Remote Oceania with the kūmara (sweet potato) and a species of gourd. Radiocarbon dates for kūmara found on Mangaia in the southern Cook Islands show that Polynesians had reached South America and returned by 1000 A.D."

https://teara.govt.nz/en/pacific-migrations/page-the result 1

While some may regard the above statement as a bit dogmatic they do offer some scientific evidence in the way of sweet potato and gourd DNA.

Polynesian DNA showing up in Blackfeet Indians and to a lesser degree in other tribes could have been hosted by migrants from Asia coming by way of the Bearing Land Bridge or those who later followed coast lines of Asia/island hopped in a northerly direction in some sort of vessel, crossed the Bearing Sea and then proceeded south along the west coast of North America.  It also seems plausible to me that the DNA could have been introduced into the Western Hemisphere via South America or some intermediate point along the West Coast going north given the distances Polynesians are known to have traveled over open ocean.  (Oahu to San Diego is a mere 2100 miles.)  As you know there was migration south to north worldwide as the glaciers receded and it seems possible to me that this might have been the case with the ancestors of the Blackfeet.  Of course, periods of isolation and DNA mutation points would have to be factored in but so far I haven't seen anything that would rule that out.

This would come under the heading of “Suspicion Confirmed” but since there is no thread so entitled, I’m posting it here.

Many of us have questioned the generally accepted theory that all Native Americans are descendants of nomadic tribes that came to the Western Hemisphere from Asia via an ice bridge that existed in the far north during the last ice age and over the millennia worked their way all the way down to Tiera del Fuego.  (This theory has been defended up to very recently by anthropologist, archeologist, geneticists, etc.). For the most part our doubts were based simply on observed variations between NA groups throughout the Americas with respect to physiognomy, physical stature, culture and lifestyle, etc.  Nothing scientificâ€"just using the Mk 1, Mod 2 eyeball and comparing and contrasting.  This is the first empirical evidence that there was more than one route taken by NAs to the Americas and at least one was by boat.  Feel free to gloat.

“This Man's DNA Is the Oldest in North America” and its connected by haplogroup to Polynesia.
