Note:  George J. Dietrich served nearly 24 years in the US Navy.  He was not assigned to any ship or shore station in the Pacific or European theaters during WW2.  He was not assigned to any ship or shore station involved in Korea from 1950-1953.  He retired in August 1965 prior to major US Navy involvement in Vietnam (December 1965). He was not a "three war combat veteran"

WW2:  Assigned to shore stations (NRS) in Rochester and Buffalo, New York.

Korea: Assigned to USN Receiving Station (NRS) Brooklyn, NY (Jan 1950); AFSC Norfolk, VA (Feb 1951); USN Receiving Station Norfolk, VA (Feb 1953); USS Gilbert Island (in dry-dock Norfolk, VA) (April 1953).

Vietnam: USS Midway CVA - 41 (Feb 1963 - May 1964)  WESTPAC (Last port call Subic Bay, Philippines August 1963) Returned to California for 6 month refurbishment.

George J Dietrich did not retire as an E-7 Chief Petty Officer.  He retired as an E-6 Petty Officer First Class.

"Following the outbreak of the Korean War in the summer of 1950, many mothballed warships were recalled to service, including Gilbert Islands which recommissioned at Philadelphia on 7 September 1951, Capt. Carl E. Giese in command. After a six month overahaul at Boston Naval Shipyard starting on 25 November, the escort carrier joined the Atlantic Fleet on 1 August 1952. The warship sailed eight days later with a cargo of jets for Yokohama, Japan, arriving 18 September, and returned to her new homeport of Quonset Point, R.I., on 22 October. Gilbert Islands got underway 5 January 1953 for a short training cruise to the West Indies, returning to New England waters in the spring to continue those duties through the summer and fall of that year."

George Dietrichs' first ship assignment was the USS Virgo (AKA-20)  June 1949.

"She completed repairs in August 1946 and, on the 21st, began a series of voyages from the west coast to American bases in the Far East. She carried provisions and stores to bases in the Philippines, in the Marianas, in Japan, and in China. She also made side trips to Okinawa, the Admiralty Islands, and Korea. That routine lasted until the latter half of 1949"

George Dietrich had a great career in the Navy....He was a Supply/Store Clerk also trained in  Aviation Supply....Douglas does not need to embellish his dad's service history.

In fact, Dietrich could use the FOIA documents of his fathers records to make some contacts and request copies of his ribbons/medals etc.  A lot of people (families) do this.....all it takes is some time and research and a few bucks.  It is getting more difficult to do this with some specific WW2 era decorations with specific bars or clasps and lapel pins etc.  But it can be done.
