Mr. Fidget:

I have to eat some crow here. Previously I said I didn't think Art would ever address this matter with you again. This afternoon, I was proven wrong. Clearly to some degree this still weighs on Art, but I still don't think you're going to get what you want from him.

While I still think you being unable to move on from a decades old matter is harming you more than helping, I do hope that you are able to find the strength to eventually move past this and find some closure eventually. Art apologizing isn't going to magically fulfill those orders that were missed so many years ago. From what I've seen from you, I do worry that unless you receive some kind of apology you won't be able to let go. That would be a sad case indeed.

All the best, in any case.

Until this latest spasm of recrimination, I honestly thought he already had.

Seriously, aren't we past this?

Good point, and if he already did I definitely stand corrected. But I think Mr. Fidget will be waiting an eternity if he thinks Art is going to address this again. Just my opinion, or course. :)

Art's "Professionalism", I have my thoughts about it, but I'm still in the process of a twenty year case study.

>>>What is reasonable for a guest to expect?

If a guest provides developmental technology, and asks for one of five models to be released, one should be released. I specifically told Art to "only put the simplest one on the website, the one with the accompanying comic book provided."

He put up a jumbled pile of five.

It may have been unprofessional.

I'll check back when my study is completed.

Hey, Mr. Fidget.

In case you didn't get the memo, Art is human. Humans make mistakes. Get over it! It'll be a cold day in hell when Art apologizes to you. I think he has more important things to deal with like a family and an actual life. But keep on making an ass out of yourself on these forums, we'll keep laughing.  ;D

Heather, you're doing great. Keep up the good work and I look forward to hearing more from you in the future. As a wise man once said:
"Don't let the turkeys keep you from soaring with the eagles!".

(And you'll know you've truly made it when you've survived a 'J.C.' call.) ;)

It looks like they are using Moviestorm to make these vids - which is a custom machinima tool, Second Life is good for making machinima in  - I do it, but the lip synch and general look make me think Moviestorm.

Thanks for chiming in on that, DynamoHum! I appreciate the info.

Who is doing these animated videos of "Art's Happenings"? Great work!

I agree. Anyone know what animation software is being used to create these shorts? Maybe Maya or Livewave 3D? It almost has a 'Second Life' feel to it.

makes me think of how hilarous an Art Bell "universe" (he has his own now) celebrity deathmatch would look

That would be hilarious indeed. Now to think of a a name. How about, "Friday night phone line fights". (Okay, that's a pretty horrible name actually). ;)

Shouldn't the question be "What will drive you to drink while listening to Midnight in the Desert? ;)

My response would be: "Anytime I hear that damned Squatty Potty (tm) commercial or the Psychic Treadmill Repairman ad (Sorry Art, I knows you gots to pay da bills. Just poking a little fun!).

God's very own Ten Star General in the fight against pornography. 30 minutes of open lines with JC and other callers. Ha, just Art let him do years ago.

I think it would be fun to have a throw down between Hoagie and JC, all moderated by Art. I can see it now:

"Mister Hoagland, you make the blasphemous claim that there are 7 mile high glass towers on the moon??? How dare yeeeeew!!" ;)

I would settle for three hours of JC.  I need him to call again.

I hope JC calls in again as well. One of the great mysteries of the universe is how someone so foul and repugnant has come to be one of the most universally adored characters in the Art Bell universe. I really don't know how Edna puts up with him. Does anyone know if JC was ever linked to Westboro Baptist Church? I wouldn't be surprised if he was a card carrying member. (On second thought, JC may be too extreme even for them).

Maybe Art should should have a special line just for JC on friday nights. He can be Art's new religious adviser. ;)

KABC has announced Art's return to their station in an official post on their website. You can read the story here:

Congrats, sir. That is truly a win for team Bell and all that want to rescue the night airwaves from mediocrity and tumeric supplement ads. ;)

Roswells,

while I think most in this thread have only the best of intentions for Art (including me), Art's a big boy and I'm sure he is handling this just fine. Respectfully, I ask what is the point of issuing a FOIA request and posting Art's home address and other information? What is to be gained from that and how will that help Art? I don't think there is any harm in discussing the event but I don't get why any of that is relevant to what happened last night.

I'm not trying to be critical, I'm just genuinely curious. As for myself, I say we just wait until the show tonight and see what Art has to say (if he says anything about the incident at all). Art knows that we all have his back, and yes he is a public figure but I think he deserves, nay, needs his breathing room, too.  :D

The one thing about Art is he's kinda bought into the global warming thing a little different than pragmatic deduction would have us...  Well, look at this picture and tell me, where's the melting ice cap water going?

Maybe the picture in 1963 was taken at high tide and the picture in 2014 was taken at low tide?  :o ;D

Hey Georgie, I found a new product for you to advertise on Coast. Behold:

"Drink this delicious tumeric-coconut bedtime drink for sleep & digestion. Like a fine red wine, it's the perfect late night sipper to enjoy while listening to your favorite Coast to Coast host!"

(Yes, this is a real thing. And yes, I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth).

Very cool news regarding the mysterious structures seen around the star KIC 8462852 (as mentioned at the top of Art's show tonight). Still a little hesitant to think that they are actual alien structures (I think there is probably a more mundane answer like comets, etc), but I did find this cool artist's rendering of what a dyson sphere might look like. One is able to see how it would block out the light of a star in an irregular fashion from our vantage point:

I for one welcome our new 'star power harnessing' overlords.  ;D

I was joking of course. The Aussies are well represented. I enjoy Jazzy's call ins.

The show is on at a perfect time for the Aussie audience. Now it's on between 3pm and 6pm. I'm mostly traveling in the car in traffic and it's the perfect companion.

As was I. :D It's great hearing Aussies call in (although where are the New Zealanders??).

I think Jazzy has you all covered on that count.  ;)

Noory made Bateman and Jimmy Church an offer. Church wanted his 30 pieces of silver. Also, Noory is a known liar, so his word is mud. This whole thing stinks.

It will be informative to see where Leo ends up next. If he somehow gets involved with Coast in any way it will be tempting to think that someone there had something to do with his departure from MITD. It could be the case however that they had nothing to do with it but still may pick him up now that he is a free agent (although I would imagine the suits at Premier would be hesitant to pick up someone who is so willing to spew sour grapes all over the Interwebz).

But yes, this whole thing is a shit storm from any perspective.

this is why i don't think premiere radio made leo an offer.  attached is a message i sent noory the other night:

Very interesting, MV. Thanks for sharing that conversation snippet. I may have to rethink my working theory about who or what may have been the driving force behind Leo's motivations. I agree with you in that even if Gnoory didn't have anything to do with this, someone in his entourage still could have been a factor in this without his knowledge. But then as you suggested, who in the Coast family could have known that Leo would have went full nuclear with an offer to defect?

Weird things are afoot. Sometimes I wish it was like three weeks ago and all we were talking about was what Art's big announcement was.  ;)

There may be more to this.  Leo owns Nexus and that is the springboard that Art was using to launch the satellite hook-up with the up to 4000 stations.  Nexus even wrote the PR release for this launch for Art.  There were comments that some of Leo's equipment was used and could that be some that involves the Nexus link.  Nexus is Leo, I think.  With him departing that has left.  This was the next level for Art or how this was presented and advertised.

PremRat threw the steak out to Leo and he jumped at it.  That was part of the beginning of this shamble.  Leo got mad and took Nexus with him.  Now, Art may or may not have the capabilities to take it to the next level, at least as it was presented through Nexus.

This was Art's big move and PremRat quashed it.  Now, Norry is trying to get PR through the weird news paranormal presidential articles.  It reads to me much deeper than Leo simply being the reader of the news.  That is one spin I am analyzing.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this comment, Dateline.

It seems most of us here were thrown for a loop when Leo went bananas and quit MITD. All that *most* of us knew about Leo was that he was the quirky Dark Matter News announcer who occasionally flubbed up things most professional radio announcer shouldn't or wouldn't get wrong. Few here had any idea of how deep his roots were entangled with MITD and it's production.

The fog and obfuscation on all of this has been slowly lifting as the pieces of the puzzle get put into place by the would-be sleuths here among us 'gabbers. I don't think anything really needs to be said regarding the drama in all of this - it is what it is and shit happens in the business world - but one thing is clear and that is Leo has had more potential to affect the MITD brand than most of us realized. And to me at least, it's becoming more and more clear that there may be a more sinister puppet master involved in all of this that goes beyond Leo. He may turn out to be just a mere pawn in this chess game we call the radio business.

I'm not a tech person so sorry if these are stupid questions.

Would an internet outage affect the XDS feed to stations?

Are his phone lines internet based? Of course Skype is but are the "land lines" he uses for people calling from their crappy cell phone?

Hey Ping! The only stupid question is the one unasked. :)

If my understanding is right, the Midnight in the Desert stream is sent over the Internet via fiber optic cable from Art's studio to Westwood One's Satellite uplink center, where it is 'uploaded' to their satellite that then beams the show out (along with many other shows) for radio stations to pick up using their own satellite dish and XDS receiver. So, if Art loses his fiber optic network connection, Westwood One won't be able to pick up his feed to distribute via satellite. (Or if you prefer the short answer, yes).

Regarding the phone lines, I'm not sure about that but my guess is that Art probably has a solid landline connection for those.

It did, but made it seem trivial.  When people didn't have remote control on their TV channel selector, a popular lead-in program was a huge advantage because of people who wouldn't get up to change stations.  When people had UHF on a separate dial from VHF, similarly the inconvenience was a factor.  But that was based on individual audience members who had little at stake.  For someone in the business, making a cx is a rather trivial affair in the overall scheme of things, isn't it?  Would you really factor into your business decision to carry a program this amount of extra work?  Especially when you have staff who are doing this sort of thing all the time?  WFMU has mostly unpaid staff, yet they do all sorts of technical gizmoidery.

I remember when Steve Dahl's program was carried in Milwaukee by locally retransmitting a b'cast FM signal out of Chicago's WXRT/WLUP.  It was subject to tropospheric bending near the VHF horizon, hence variable.  IIRC they kept that up for a while after they'd added a Detroit affiliate by satellite.  That was the decision, even though it meant sometimes they had to say the program was unavailable due to conditions, & other times fadey.  If a technical matter like that was such a low consider'n, I would think all the more so for the current consider'ns.

Robert, you bring up some excellent points and I enjoyed reading the historical account you offered. I do agree that it should not have be any great hurdle for a radio station to pick up Art's show as it it was being offered (presumably as an online feed) before the transition to the XDS satellite feed. I would think that for those radio stations that already have made an investment in getting an XDS subscription and associated satellite dish/hardware in place, the convenience factor of having MITD being presented as part of the XDS suite of shows from which to choose can only be a net plus for station managers looking at various factors when deciding what programming to run. Having said that, I have no idea how much weight that factor carries as there are myriad other variables they would have to consider before choosing to run MITD (ad revenue, show pricing, time slot conflicts, contracts, etc).

It would be interesting to hear from someone who has experience operating a station that uses an XDS feed.
