Vaccine debate gets heated!

This is pretty funny. Never seen Anderson Cooper do a better Bill O'reilly imatation. Clearly both are passionate about the vaccine debate. The vaccine debate is interesting because it hasn't had time yet to find party lines. Wealthy Liberals and redneck Conservatives come down on the same side on this one. One can only imagine the time Art would spend with some interesting experts on this issue. Good stuff.

Yet, sadly, much like climate change, the fact that there is even a debate on vaccination at all is patently ridiculous and manufactured only by ignorance and an unwillingness to accept scientific data and consensus.

There were a number of vaccinations we refused to allow them to stick into our son when he was a baby... some we allowed.

By no means are all vaccinations necessary, and by no means do you have to allow multiple simultaneous vaccinations into a newborn.

We spaced out those we would allow and point blank refused to allow others.

Unfortunately the opposite end of the spectrum to 'No Vaccinations' is 'All Vaccinations', and blind acceptance of all vaccinations is as silly as no vaccinations.

This seems to be the best way to go about vaccinations these days. They track vaccinations down to lot #, side effects, etc...You can ask your doctor for which "batch" they're using before you inject your kids so you can check out the reported issues with that "batch".

Just like the abortion issue. Wait til politicians run with the vaccinations issue. It'll be "all or nothing" and another great issue for political platforms of the next 50 years.

Even the CDC (and the equivalent agencies in the UK and Europe) admit that not all vaccines are worth it. Or that for some people (auto-immune diseases, age, certain allergies, pregnancy, etc) are not worth it. For example most of us, in the Western world, are not vaccinated any more for TB. (A little worrying considering immigration- legal and otherwise.) Likewise unless you are traveling to known countries we don't get the Yellow Fever vaccine. There is always a decision made (by parents, by individuals, or by governments) that takes into account efficacy, potential contraindications, costs, and necessity.

"However, BCG is not generally recommended for use in the United States because of the low risk of infection..."
http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/Pages/bcg-tuberculosis-TB-vaccine.aspx
"BCG vaccine (which stands for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine) protects against TB. It's not given as part of the routine NHS childhood vaccination schedule unless a baby is thought to have an increased risk of coming into contact with TB."
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5907a1.htm
"No human efficacy studies have been performed with YF vaccine." (bizarre, sort of)
"YF vaccine is recommended for laboratory personnel who might be exposed to virulent YFV or to concentrated preparations of YF vaccine virus strains by direct or indirect contact or by aerosols.
Recommendations for Prevention of YF Among Travelers
All travelers to countries in which YF is endemic should be advised of the risks for the disease and available methods to prevent it, including personal protective measures and vaccine."

The thing I like best about the controversy over vaccines today, is that I saw this coming twenty-five years ago.

The media frames this debate over the California legislation as being between common sense science and crazy anti-vaxxers. In fact, many of us who oppose the California school requirement are not anti-vaccine at all. Our problem is that two years ago, Merck and Pfizer lobbied to get legislation passed that frees them from any liability. And now vaccines will be required for school. That's no coincidence.

The focus here is on making children into profit centers when it should be about childrens health. But that's not what you see on the news.

“I think we ought to have state and federal policies that maximize vaccine coverage of the population. But I think we have to begin the process by making sure the vaccines are safe, efficacious and that the regulatory agency which recommends vaccines … and monitors them has integrity and credibility, and, unfortunately, that is not the case at the moment.”

QuoteLast month, the health department in Kentucky found out that vaccines for the flu, whooping cough, and hepatitis A not only weren’t working but they were infecting people.

As WKRC points out, the company Location Vaccination started providing vaccines for businesses in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana in September. Shortly after, some people started noticing swelling and lumps at the injection site.

Only after multiple people across three states began complaining of infections did the health department step in and realize that the vaccines had all been contaminated. They had been improperly stored which led to this contamination.

Ironically enough, the health department is urging all those who were vaccinated by this companyâ€"that may have infected them with contaminated vaccinesâ€"to get another round of shots.
