I think there was a story... One that he said once upon a time he would rather not tell.  I'm guessing that it was probably pretty mild.

Over the years, it has grown into a massive "thing", and now if he were to relate it with the built up expectations it would be a let-down. With all of the hype people would be disappointed if Lucifer himself materialized from the board to deliver a message, when in reality the pointer probably "jumped" an inch off the board of flew off the table. So it continues as the story that Art cannot ever tell.

You self-answered your question. "Him saying something doesn't mean anything anymore" means less reliability and less cash and more legalities to ensure he stays. Unreliability and difficulty is not cool in the entertainment industry. He could sort of do that stuff when he had a brand going, but did it too much and has pretty much exhausted his brand now.
