aaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh!

bad news. the oven part of my brand new electric range has just gone tits-up. >:(

good news. except for three pounds of sugar cookie dough, all the baking was completed. a month ago i decided to go with several 3 lb. boneless turkeys and a 5 lb. ham. they will cook just fine in several slow cookers i own. the stove top still functions which will make all the other heating and cooking possible. normally i make gravy from the turkey drippings. for whatever reason on my trip home today, i picked up several packages of turkey gravy at the store. before the oven quit! figure the odds.  8)

Griswold family christmas avoided.  ;D

What a lousy break, Zen. Good thing you have alternative options and were ahead of the disaster.

I have a Flavor Wave Oven and won't be without one if I can help it. Very handy to have around.

I hope everything works out well and that you and your family have a Merry Christmas.

Thanks for posting this RGG, it jogged a few memories no doubt. Images and sounds from Divine's musical number on ice have haunted me for years and I couldn't recall where they came from.

And now we're only one day away:

Cheers, Northern!  Thanks for the Classic Ed clip! Waiting for Christmas always made me mental, too!

Riktig god jul til deg og dine ogsÃ¥, albrecht!  Fortunately my aunt had a stack left over from a party last weekend so I have another year to perfect them, thank God.

I see the nisse has actually been at the julegrøt this year; may be time to put some traps out.

In return I expect him to keep the trolls away as that's part of the bargain.

Snowing lightly here, too!  Time to get out the strømper og lappesko.

K_Dubb, there was a travesty here! I will say it here, but in keeping with tradition of Nordic-types, kept it internalized and boiling, not only no lutefisk (host this Christmas Eve said, even when I said I'd buy and prepare (not that anyone can maybe)- shockingly- too much smell and no one but you and some will eat it!!) but I also was shocked at a "children's service" we went too (no one wanted a traditional or late service) at another Lutheran church that bordered on "mega" and had..."big screens,' (at least no "rock music" service etc" ;)  ) when I complained later, my brother said "get with the program, kids need rock and big screens, be happy they went at all." Lefse, meatballs, etc were good. I drank a lot. Today all good, more meatballs, boiled potatoes, etc and more gifts, that I must say the kids like but overwhelming chaos. Lotsa Nisse gifts etc. And I got some good tools and fishing stuff stuff but, still, drinking some mismoas (!!- a newbie to our clan by marriage; not blood) wishing those happy kids, and me, and all, had traditional service, Communion....and should ate some lutefisk. At least a bite with lotsa melted butter and salt to let it get through the natural reflexive action... Merry Christmas, God Jul, to you and all. And to you all Good night!

Happy Boxing Day! December 26 is also St. Stephens Day. The Christmas Carol, Good King Wenceslas, is set on the day and the about a king who brings food to a poor family.

An interesting holiday:

Oh I am so sorry!  Well, thank God for the meatballs, then.  We had kjøttkaker pÃ¥ lillejulaften.  Being the family traditionalist is a thankless and ultimately losing game -- like the song (which I did get to hear! always brings a tear) says, tider skal komme, tider skal henrulle, slekt skal følge slekters gang.

I think for conservative you can't beat the Finnish Lutherans.  Half their Christmas songs are still right out of Piae Cantiones.

Thanks for bringing up, Pye!  In much of Scandinavia St. Stephen's Day was traditionally the beginning of the serious Christmas partying, the preceding Advent being devoted to church-going.  Sweden has a whole repertory of Steffansvisor, Stephen-songs, sung by the star boys in their pointy hats, of which this one, though not the most popular, is probably my favorite:

Has anybody experienced a New Years celebration in Hawaii?  Looks like they take it pretty serious there.

K_Dubb

Arguably the most popular Norwegian Christmas song, used to open or close concerts, is Deilig er jorden, here in a Christmas concert at the palace in Oslo.

Beautiful (but also delicious!) is the world,
Noble is God's heaven,
Lovely is the soul's pilgrim's-way.
Throughout the fair kingdoms on earth
We go to paradise with song.

Times shall come, times shall pass,
Generation shall follow generation.
Never silenced, the tunes from heaven
In the soul's happy pilgim-song.

Angels sang it first to lonely shepherds,
Beauty from soul to soul this song:
Peace upon earth!  Mankind, rejoice!
Unto us an eternal savior is born.

Happy New Year, everyone! Thank you K_Dubb for sharing more about St Stephen's Day and for the lovely music.

Rix Gin- Fireworks are a great tradition- Hawaii would be a beautiful place to ring in the new year.

And it's nice to have you join us here, HumanBeing....thanks for sharing....

New Year's is up next although in some countries, like Russia, Christmas isn't until January 7th and their celebrations reflect both Christian and ancient Slavic beliefs.

Quote from: rbth.com
But in order to get a more accurate picture of the upcoming year, peasants â€"in defiance of a ban imposed by the church â€" resorted to fortunetelling. The longest night of the year seemed an appropriate time for that, since, according to Slavic beliefs, it is on that day that evil spirits were at their most active and willingly came into contact with people.

And although answers to the posed questions were expected to come from pucks, hobgoblins and house elves, the incantations were often addressed to Christ, the Holy Virgin and various saints.

Thanks Pye that rye punch sounds really good!

I've always wanted to try to make an adult version of that punch I remember from birthday parties when I was a kid, the one with juice, soda and a big block of sherbet floating in it.  That bubbly, creamy texture is just so damn festive.
