Hong Kong: another Tiananmen Square, or....thoughts please.

The PRC also didn't bluff Tibet (early 50s), India (1962), USSR (1969), Vietnam (1979), the Tiananmen protestors (1989), or most recently, relative to their claims in the South China Sea.

They have warned the Hong Kong protesters, and surprisingly given them a lot of leeway, but it will end badly if things keep up as they are or get worse.

Duke, I just have to disagree. This is a new age. The information age, if you will. The world has changed dramatically.  China absolutely can not afford to commit another human rights atrocity similar to Tiananmen Square. Won`t happen. They`ll rough a few protesters up; make some outlandish proclamations, but they`re not going to slaughter thousands of people. That would spell the end of China as we know it. I have no doubt of it. Should be interesting to see how it plays out. Especially with Trump interjecting himself squarely in the middle of it (which, BTW, I think is a very intelligent and well-played move).

It is interesting given their history that they choose to fly the American flag rather than, say, the British.  It would seem that, for all the talk of how our international prestige has been diminished, it remains high among people who actually matter.

They have used the Union Jack, but they've also been using the old Hong Kong flag.

Shocking.  Those brazen entrepreneurs would fly a hussy's bedsheets from a bargepole if they thought she had an air force.

I hope you're right, but I'm betting on some type of military intervention.  It might not be as iron fisted as Tiananmen, but that will depend largely on the protestors themselves.  The loss of face in allowing this to continue I think would be too much for the Chinese in general and the Party in particular.

I would expect leaders from Western/democratic nations to say all the right things about the safety and rights of the HK protestors, even threaten sanctions. Trump has taken it a step too far suggesting Xi should meet with him to negotiate  the issue, however.

Why do you think that?

I'm hoping FTF (nice to see ya again BTW) is right on this, but I'm having trouble not agreeing more with Uncle Duke.  This is the same country that forcefully harvests organs from perceived enemies of the state.  Granted, that doesn't seem to garner much media attention- certainly nowhere near the extent of the Hong Kong situation.

Clearly, Tar-aura was talking to JaxTarr about the Civial War in another thyme-lein (rhymes with Heinlien) and accidentally de-railed this King Kong thread.

FIFY.  Yeah, I know--who asked me?

The U.S. "Navy Jack" is also known as the Union Jack and it's flown from the jackstaff on the bow of the ship.  It is never flown ashore.

If anyone is so inclined there is a fascinating, and hilarious, pseudo-legal theory (or real if you believe the theorists) about the "gold-fringed" flag and that our Federal Courts are actually Admiralty Courts (or Maritime Courts depending on how one wishes to express the idea) and a different type of legal system than popularly believed. The theory can expand to that the British, or, more particularly The City, actually still runs the courts and my extension the Royals (who are German) who had to give up some sovereignty to The City (why they have that whole mayor spectacular at Temple Bar.) Lloyd's of London (911 claims that 'disappeared' after being settled- not in public because not a public company and not, really, an insurance company or underwriter as popularly believed but a sorta of quasi reinsurance company but really more of a market of underwriters and reinsurers.) And then you can go down the Temple Bar, the civil war (English one) and why the radical Protestants allowed a certain Tribe back (after Edward I kicked them out, at least legally.) and the "forgotten Amendment" due to the War of 1812. And so on. Whew. Can be fun but I do not suggest using the whole "you have no jurisdiction because you are an Admiralty Court and you are a sovereign citizen and a "Real," non-corporate person" ."  ;)

Whatever, nerd.

It's not actually a settled matter, so your attempts at pedantry are wrong.

QuoteGraham Bartram (born 1963), a British vexillologist who is, as of 2013, the secretary-general for congresses of the Fédération internationale des associations vexillologiques and the chief vexillologist of the Flag Institute, when interviewed on the BBC Broadcasting House programme on 13 October 2013, stated that either name was perfectly valid whatever the purpose. He stated that the theory that the flag should only be referred to as "Union Jack" when flown at sea was wrong.

Oh the blue one is back now, as of June!  I lost a horribly embarrassing wager with some guy less than a year ago who was trying to tell me it was the snake.

No one said you were living in a nursing home.  You make it sound like people who live in nursing homes don't pay money to do so.  There are many retirement homes which are simply apartment buildings with "call bells" in the bathrooms.

You must be a fun date, how do you sit down to eat dinner with all that kickin' going on?  Would we have to sit back to back? because I don't want to put my balls to your face, well at least not in the middle of the restaurant.

Hey, Star, who loves ya?  I was playing along with Shredi's narrative which puts me in a nursing home. I prefer that to an institution for the criminally insane which is closer to the truth.  Don't take it personal.  XXXOOO.

The Venezuelans who support Maduro far outnumber the corrupt antisocial number that support U.S. imperialism. amerikkkan political illiterates have no aptitude for math either.

Fidel’s Message to President Nicolás Maduro

Dear Nicolás:

I join the unanimous opinion voicing congratulations to you for your brilliant and brave speech on the night of December 6th, as soon as the election results were known.

In the history of the world, the highest level of political glory that any revolutionary can attain belongs to Simón Bolívar, the illustrious Venezuelan combatant and the Liberator of the Americas; his name belongs not only to that sister country but to all the peoples of Latin America.

Another officer of Venezuelan lineage, Hugo Chávez, understood and admired him and he fought for his ideas right up to the final moment of his life.  From his childhood, attending primary school in the country where Bolívar’s impoverished heirs also had to work to help support their families, he developed the spirit that had forged the Liberator of the Americas.

The millions of children and young people who are today attending the largest and most modern chain of public schools in the world are from Venezuela.  We can also say a few things about its network of medical care centers and the health care for a people who are courageous but impoverished because of the centuries of pillage by the Spanish metropolis and subsequently by the huge transnational companies that for over one hundred years ripped from its entrails all the best of that immense wealth of oil with which Nature had endowed that nation.

History must also leave the record of the fact that workers exist and they are the ones who make it possible for us to enjoy the most nutritious foods, the medicines, education, security, homes and the solidarity of the world. But also, if they wish, ask the oligarchy that question: do they know all that?

The Cuban revolutionaries, just a few miles from the United States which has always dreamt of taking over Cuba in order to turn it into a sort of casino-brothel hybrid as a lifestyle for the children of José Martí, have never renounced their full independence and the total respect for their dignity.  I am certain that it is only with peace for all the peoples of the Earth and the right to make the planet’s natural resources, as well as the sciences and technologies created by human beings for the benefit of all its inhabitants, common property, that we can preserve human lives on this Earth. If humankind continues its course along the paths of exploitation and the transnational companies and imperialist banks keep on looting its resources, the representatives of the Governments who met in Paris will be able to arrive at the pertinent conclusions.

Today security no longer exists for anyone. Nine Governments have nuclear weapons; one of them, the United States, dropped bombs that killed hundreds of thousands of persons in just three days and caused physical and psychological harm to millions of defenseless persons.

The People’s Republic of China and Russia know much better than the United States about the problems of the world because they had to withstand terrible wars imposed on them by the blind egoism of fascism. I harbor no doubts that because of their historical tradition and their own revolutionary experience they will take maximum efforts to avoid war and to contribute to the peaceful development of Venezuela, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Fraternally,

Fidel Castro Ruz

And regardless of where the 'zuelans stand in the political spectrum, they are all starving due to socialism.   Let's stay on point, shall we?  Socialism is a multiply failed BS system to screw the little guys.

too true.  The facts are that in this capitalist horror of an existence that I live, I have a family, my own home, 3 cars, two years of food storage, my kids are in college fighting leftist indoctrination, and oh yeah, I can do or not do whatever the fuck I please.

And the 'zuelans in their Socialist Refuge are all starving.

I know the life I'm living is of no consequence to you.  but I'm working class, and I'm not crushed. folded or mutilated.  My whole family is insured.  I've got no problems that I can't handle.

Course, this is America, not some socialist enclave where the people are starving to death and you have free medical.... but no medicines.
