Oh, calm down. Half the paranoia and suspicious responses are tongue in cheek. Post more often and you will fit in fine.

Privilege exists. I think it would be easier to recognize if you grew up in a time of overt racism, but it's easy to see if you look hard enough even in a time of more covert racism. Like everything, it just depends on where you live and what you're experiences are. I think if something as arbitrary as beauty priviledge exists, then race privilege absolutely does.

At least where I live, I've noticed in the papers that anytime a school science/math/spelling bee is won, it's always students of Indian or Asian background. Some of the schools here are majority Asian/Indian. Their parents are the ones working in the high-tech corporations. Things are definitely changing.

Haloedorchid-

It's pretty segregated here too, but I'll use this as an example:

There's a couple of bars I go to on a somewhat regular basis. One is a Country bar(I hate country music but the girls always look good) Every time I'm in that bar it's 98% white, 1.5% non white and .5% black. The 3 or 4 blacks that come in there, come in solely for the reason of starting shit by bumping into people, calling everybody white devils etc. Sometimes this problem takes care of itself by a bunch of rednecks kicking their ass pretty good.

Another bar I go to is a bit more mixed, but even here I notice more racism between the blacks & hispanics, as they usually exchange words with each other and sometimes a fight breaks out.

Alot of times you even have racism amongst the various 'genres' of people. The Guidos start shit with the rednecks, the rednecks start shit with the wannabe rednecks, this metalhead sits at the bar with his pitcher of beer watching it all go down.

Those people deserve to have their asses kicked. Even though the term "white devil" is cartoonishly funny.

The last part of your post reminds me of being in junior high and how the skaters hated the preps, etc. It's  sad that mentality continues in people who are above drinking age. (and what the HELL is a wannabe redneck? Lol)

I'm surprised no one has brought up that email circulating that depicts President Obama as a baby chimpanzee. It has two parent chimps dressed in shirts and a baby chimp with Obama's face photoshopped onto it. On the Bill Handel show they took a poll to see whether or not people considered it racist. Something like 60% of the listeners said no. That blew my mind.

The book also goes into more detail about freakishly large bird sightings, which I believe could be due to the chemical exposure.

Paranormal - Conspiracy - UFOs - Etc. / mothman

I just finished watching Eyes of the Mothman. It was pretty well-detailed. I wish they would've shaved off some Chief Cornstalk time and added more to the Men in Black. Until I started reading the book, I didn't know about all of the UFO and Men in Black sightings.

The mothman could've been a mutated crane, but why would it invoke such fear in people? It might be startling, but these people suffered post-traumatic stress events from what they saw. Maybe some things are mob mentality and hysteria, but there are other things that are genuinely unexplained.

How does an entire town hallucinate UFOs and MiBs, as well?

Also, I don't know why, but that Indrid Cold character FREAKS me out. I think it's the grinning.

I don't have very much experience with black/white racism, as Portland is very much segregated with black people mostly on the east side of town and whites on the west. There is, however, an fair amount of tension between whites and Latino people on the west side. I think it's mostly due to ignorance on both parts. The Latinos tend to seclude themselves in their own communities (one nearby town has nearly 50% Hispanic population). Some people complain and do the "learn English!" routine.

There are also a lot of white people here feel some sort of white guilt and overcompensate. A local town, for example, has a huge celebration of Mexico's independence day but does nothing for the 4th of July. Some people get angry, some feel entitled to it, and others do not care either way, like my Mexican husband and myself.

I have never been exposed to blatant racism, or seen it against my husband. The most is the passive aggressiveness, or backhanded compliments, I suppose. Like someone will express shock that my husband is from Mexico because he is educated and doesn't work a traditional "Mexican" job.

There is also a large Asian population where I live, and they seem to get a pass, as someone else expressed above. They are mostly educated, upper middle class and 2nd generation, so the accent isn't an issue. I still hear ignorant comments, though, and it makes my stomach turn.

I don't know what the answer is. I think everyone needs to try and put away their biases and view people as individuals, not representatives of everyone from their ethnic background.

There were no alien wars to be seen, unfortch. And no interdimensional beings or portals. It was pretty overcast, like always. I did see a few shooting stars, though, and that was pretty cool.

The goggles themselves were pretty impressive. 4th generation. I could see some people having a bonfire party from quite a distance. It would've been really easy to sneak up on them, but I didn't want to chance them having guns, haha.

I will try again if I get the chance, but this go-round was quite a disappointment!

I just got the book The Mothman Prophecies, which I plan on starting tonight. I'm really interested in that Indrid Cold character -- hopefully he will get a mention in the book.

Was there more to this thread a few years ago? Or am I just missing something?

As the top picture loaded, I was expecting to see Grimsley showing some, um, excitement for his lady friend. So glad I was wrong.

Aw, that's totally cool. Wish I could get my hands on a set. Try to stare for as long as you can, might take awhile? I don't know. Hate to miss the Death Star detonation for lack of stamina.

I see you are in Portland. Trout Lake, Wa, is a short drive from you. Should take the fam to Gilliland's ranch if you want to see something. It's another option. Spring is here, the sky's are clearing, not super cold. And people see some weird things up there (Mt. Adams). He'll let you camp for free. Check out his website if you are interested.

P.S. Tell them you want the googles to look at the night life/critters. People, even family, just don't understand, and they might not ever look at you the same way again. My .02 cents.

Thank you for the tip. I've been trying to find some places around here to explore for some paranormal activity. My brother, sister, and I are all really into it and it's high time for a hunt of what's out there. Maybe we'll see a Bigfoot.

That's funny you mentioned the night life/critters because that's the reason they are bringing the goggles in the first place. Maybe they are saying that as a ruse themselves. I'll wait until they broach the subject, though. Ha.

Colmes is great, he takes on all callers and has excellent, informed opinions and is fun to listen to.  Ring of Fire is also a very good radio show btw, in my opinion.
Everytime I've heard him, which is admittedly very infrequently, he mocks callers who disagree with him in an annoying voice. I don't know, he is just off-putting. Maybe he just doesn't deal with callers very well. At least from what I've heard. /disclaimering.

Did you ever find a radio show for Maddow?  If so please link here... :)

Her show on MSNBC is great...

According to Wikipedia, programming of her radio show ceased on January 21, 2010 due to economic difficulties. Damn!

Her MSNBC show is available as a podcast on iTunes, though, if you aren't able to watch it.

It's going to be in the country, so very little light. A friend of the family, shall we say...gifted themselves a pair after military duty, so they are the real deal. They are going to look at me like I am insane when I tell them why I want to use them, lol.

I have always been interested in checking it out after hearing Ed Grimsley's shows. Someone on another thread said you can see interdimensional beings with the goggles, so if the alien wars fail, hopefully I will catch one of those. ;) And I will definitely report back.

So this weekend I'm finally going to have access to some 3rd (or 4th) generation nightvision goggles. I want to see these alleged alien wars. I'm thinking I'll see bugs instead.

This would not surprise me at all. In my own life, I've noticed a surprising number of male friends, family members, and co-workers have expressed disgust over extremely sexualized media images. I think growing up in an era of instant porn and t&a on demand has backfired. Now people want some mystery.

Hopefully the violence backlash will come soon, too.

Everything is sold on shock value these days. It's not only talk radio. Most previews for new shows feature shocking images... it's also given rise to the uncut/deleted scene DVDs. Music lyrics, videos. Maybe it's always been that way, but it gets tiresome after a while.

He sounds like those shouting blowhards John and Ken. Instead of a rational, thought out response, he just yells and makes personal insults. I'm done with the over-the-top bullshit from talkshow hosts for a while. I'm surprised none of them have stroked out on air before.

I have a friend who moved to Hawaii, and now she says "da" instead of "the". It's really annoying.

Did he admit one night that he takes about eighty pills per day, or am I misremembering?
I am not sure, actually. I would not be surprised, though.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I think he did say once he takes a tablespoonful a day. If it's anything like taking a spoonful of cinnamon, then he is an official lying sack o' shit.

Maybe this explains some of George's mental decline.

Wow, that was disturbing. It doesn't help to have a baby who looks like that when sleeping. Time to go watch that laughing penguin video!

Me too.... There's been a lot of cryptic wording throughout the threads about who it is. I don't have a hint.
