If it needed a computer to unscramble it,  I think it would have been impossible for someone in 1969 to have created. There are a lot of assumptions made.
It's a lot easier to make a code than break it, so it's quite plausible that a manually created code would be impracticable to decipher without a computer.

Quote from: K_Dubb on November 11, 2020, 11:32:53 AMSure you can but your toppings will get burnt.  I'd be inclined to make a calzone with it and flip it halfway through.
I tried toasting the sauced crust first (by broiling) with the sausage, then putting on the cheese and vegetables and broiling that.  I don't think I broiled the crust long enough, because after all this the pizza came out like a conventional pie pie with a somewhat soggy crust, needing to be eaten with a fork.  Now that I've used up the dough -- half had already been used for a pizza while the oven was still working as such -- I won't make it again until I have a temperature-controlled oven.  I'll use up the yeast by fermenting beverages.

Robert, as far as I'm concerned about you, you can broil a pizza in my pants.
I used to hear of "hot pants", but that's ridiculous.

Here the Admiral of unknown vintage electric stove's oven's temperature sensing went kablooie a few days ago.  I think it still broils but when I attempted to roast/bake, it was obviously at a much lower temperature than it thought.  And here I have some homemade pizza dough to use up, and if that doesn't happen soon it'll be unintended sourdough.  I chickened out on attempting to do a pan pizza on the gas grill in the back yard after my landlady thought it would kill the pan (and possibly its own rack) if I tried to do it even with indirect heat.  I've been barbecuing the past 2 days on it -- steaks with company and then teriyaki chicken legs for us today -- in this Indian summer, but rain'scoming the next 2 days.

Think I can broil the pizza in the pan?

I don't think I want to attempt microwaving the pizza dough.

A few nights ago I went out after dusk to see Comet NEOWISE -- which I'd seen a week earlier with my naked eye (not the one with the cataract) before dawn -- here in southern Sussex, NJ County, and suddenly saw a "star" in the north, about 20 degrees above the horizon, as bright as any in the sky, seemingly motionless for about 30 seconds before it extinguished.  Could've been airplane landing light, but nobody would've had a good reason to have them on in that location flying that direction.

You mean because they're unsold time, but have the form of sold time?

For years, about the only advertisers on Larry King were companies co-owned by RKO General and PSAs.  But at least those companies did have actual products to advertise.

Spooky Tim doesn't do much talking, so it's not like he needs the rest.  However, if I were doing a program that aspired to sell ads, I think I too would put filler announcements in, just to practice the rhythm of a show.  It also provides an opportunity for the interviewer and interviewee to talk privately during the show if that's ever useful.

Quote from: Uncle Duke on February 28, 2020, 08:53:19 AMBarker had Keel chasing his tail alot relative to Mothman and his research efforts in Point Pleasant.  Keel's stories about getting anonymous messages and people contacting him despite "anyone" knowing he was in PP, that was all Barker.
One of the names spoken as a source for these contacts was "Indrid Cold" or "Culd", though they were not spoken directly to Keel so he was guessing at the spelling.  It now occurs to me that "Indrid" meant "kindred" as in spirit.  "Indrid Cold" might've meant "kindred spirit to Keel/Kiehl" or "Indrid Culd" might've meant "kindred gulled".

Quote from: Uncle Duke on February 28, 2020, 08:53:19 AM#2 definitely happened alot, Gray Barker messed with Keel a great deal. Barker was one of the early UFO writers, a guy from WV who thought UFOs were all bunk, but wrote books as if he believed in UFOs.  He was a born prankster who used stories and people he made up in his books, including introducing MIB.

Barker had Keel chasing his tail alot relative to Mothman and his research efforts in Point Pleasant.  Keel's stories about getting anonymous messages and people contacting him despite "anyone" knowing he was in PP, that was all Barker.  Keel trusted Barker, as apparently did the newspaper reporter from nearby Athens, Ohio, who was Keel's confidant and colleague in the area.  Between what Keel himself and the reporter shared with Barker, they thought in confidence, pranking and messing with Keel was like shooting fish in a barrel for Barker.
Why didn't I think of that?  It all makes sense now.

I got to know John a little in his later years as his contacts in the New York Fortean Society and among magicians died off and drifted away.  I thought to probe him a little about some of the things he'd written that didn't seem credible, but he got defensive so I backed off.  Mostly I think I bored him.

I guess I'm unusual here in having heard Nebel first run, as the Long John Nebel and Candy Jones Show on WMCA.  I wasn't that much a fan of the subject matter, but I listened to a lot of radio talk back then, and actually a lot of programs took up paranormal subjects occasionally as fads in them arose and fell.  Most of them I tuned out and sensed that the emcees were not treating the subjects anything like fairly, instead either reveling in lengthy dismissal of them or fawning all over their expositors.

Quote from: albrecht on January 20, 2020, 06:08:49 PMIt is more a Midwest deal, though happens elsewhere to an extent but maybe no basements. Especially Scandinavian Lutheran churches.  It is cold and relatively easy to dig so there are basements. Folks gather for coffee etc in the basement after church. Group meals, fundraisers, cooking classes, social events, youth events, charitable organizing, and even, depending on place, things like AA etc are held there and ladies often hang out there to gossip, cook, and what-not. Sort of the female version of a small town's barber shop for men in the gossip or news regard. Nothing nefarious
Quote from: Dr. MD MD on January 20, 2020, 06:14:52 PMNo, I get it. The same things go on at churches here. I’ve just never heard it referred to as a “basement thing” before.
Me neither, but it's a commonplace here (I'm in the Northeast), and not only in churches but other meeting buildings and even homes.  Main floor is for more formal gatherings and business, cellar is for less-formal ones, although that's not a rigid rule.  Often in such buildings it's as many steps up to the main floor as down to the basement from the entrance, and just as convenient.

I've been in a VFW HQ where the bar was upstairs (main floor), and one where the bar was downstairs (basement).  I don't know which is more prevalent.

I'm used to that from WFMU's comment frames.  But there the connection is explicit: The host of the programs is the host of the comments, and provides one layer of moderation, the station managers providing the other.  So it's a house organ, and most of them aren't sincerely interested in criticism.  But we also recognize that they're almost all volunteers, as many streamed and podcast audio shows are.

Would you say this issue is the cause of all, or nearly all, the bad blood in the present case?

Quote from: Spookcat on January 24, 2020, 11:44:59 PMDave Schrader is no longer the primary host of mitd. The torch has been passed to "Spooky Tim" Weisberg.
I'm so glad I listened last night.  Of course I fell asleep a few minutes into the first hour, woke up at 1 AM EDT, fell asleep again even quicker, but then reawakened at 2 AM and made damn sure I stayed up for that last hour.

Hearing Mr. Schrader thank everybody was intrinsically dull but good to hear.  I really wish him well and will miss him on MITD.  Comparable to Art Bell in quality in that role, maybe better.  I think Ian Punnett edges out both Mr. Bell and Mr. Schrader by a little; George Knapp is excellent at what he does but a little too serious for my taste for him to rank up there.  From the little I've heard him, Tim Weisberg is going to be good, but I don't know if he'll be as funny as Dave Schrader.

Bart Ell encapsulated the problem thusly at EllGab:
QuoteThe sooner you accept that every host outside of Art wants to do as much TV and as many conventions as possible the sooner people can take you seriously.
He's closed the Dave Schrader thread there, laying it to rest I guess, so I hope neither host minds my continuing that thought here.  The problem of audio programming is that it tends to be like a minor league farm club of the majors, i.e. video and, to some extent, touring.  Looks like Mr. Schrader will get to do both now as emcee of a travelog.  Anyway, just as the farm team develops stars, they're plucked away from the local fans by the majors.  Too bad, because some of us prefer this format.

Maybe.  Depends what kind of story the hiker has.  Like if the hiker experienced missing time, or seemingly could not have gotten to there in that amount of time, or has bizarre recollections or is unable to account for the lapse, it's still meat for Paulides.  They don't all have to die or disappear forever.

I noticed that low down chest congestion.  I'm sure there's a lot of lung butter down there clogging things up.  Heather, even back in her Gabcast days ALWAYS had slight "uh hum" sound clearing of her throat after she talked.  This is typically an early sign of smoking/vaping related damage of the natural systems of the respiratory system that actually bring phlegm (lung butter) up from the lungs into the throat, then into the mouth for expectoration from the body, or for swallowing.  Phlegm is constantly being moved from the mucin cells within the lungs, mucin cells produce mucous, mucous is the vehicle by which dust/pollen and anything else that shouldnt reside inside teh lungs up and out of the lungs.  this upwards motion of the mucous is driven by tiny hairs called cilia.  These tiny cilia have a wave like motion and are constantly actively "fanning" mucous upwards.  the problem with smoking is that these cilia are paralyzed and can actually be shortened or absent.  The paralyzed or absent cilia can no longer effectively move phlegm therefore the human must constantly have these mini coughs to move the mucous.  This will eventually lead to chronic conditions, infections etc.  It is reversible when smoking/vaping is stopped.

What would you have to vape to produce that effect?
