TOTAL COMMANDER
source: http://www.ghisler.com/
Is a very powerful filemanager, in the tradition of "Norton Commander" the old MS-DOS filemanager.

I use this. No nagging.

http://multicommander.com/

Great freeware:

1. Eraser
Performs permanent and deep erase (so not recoverable) of files.
http://eraser.heidi.ie/

2. Notepad++
Small and light text editor. I use it for scripting/programming/school.
http://notepad-plus-plus.org/

3. 7-zip
I cant live without 7 zip for file compression and decompression-handles pretty much everything. No annoying buy screens like winrar or winzip.
http://www.7-zip.org/

4. Tor
"Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security known as traffic analysis"

Good list. I use them all.

TOR is important to learn about. Good call. If you use Firefox then download "HTTPS Everywhere"

I know that MV says Firefox sucks (no question Chrome looks nicer and may be faster, although I can't really notice the difference) but Firefox has too many security features I can't leave behind. ie. noscript, better privacy, ghostery that you can't get on Chrome. Noadd and addblock  seem to work much better on fox as well.

Besides, it has that  crazy  "All-in-One Sidebar" I can't live without.  8) https://mashable.com/2009/08/12/firefox-sidebar-tips/

If you use a 64bit OS like I do then use waterfox  http://waterfoxproject.org/

chrome has something that looks like a noscript equivalent.  also, it does have ghostery.  adblockplus is now on chrome.

Yes adblockplus is on chrome but it crashes often.

Google will not allow noscript on Chrome. Or perhaps it is better said that noscript will not alter their code to be compatible with chrome. There are some unsafe scripts that google uses that conflict with noscript. There may be some programs that are similar, but there are no equivalents to date; noscript is relentlessly releasing updates, it is just so easy to use and it is trusted.

I actually like chrome a lot. It works great (much better than fox) on my old IBM thinkpad. It looks oh so very slick and has a lot of apps but it is always playing catch up on the security side of things and lacks that customization quality that Firefox has always had.

And obviously, ^Cue heavy breathing!^, YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE ALL IN ONE SIDEBAR!  ;) Once you have the sidebar, it is difficult to live without.  :-*

This is not really a Freeware Application but while Snorry and Smells waste everyone's time with bullshit conspiracy theories and number ladies, real life conspiracies are actually happening!

The FBI is warning that hundreds of thousands of people could lose their Internet connections come July 2012, unless they take steps to diagnose and disinfect their computers.

The problem is related to malware called DNSChanger that was first discovered way back in 2007 and that has infected millions of computers worldwide.

Read about it here: http://resources.avg.com.au/security_risks/dnschanger-malware/
http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2011/november/malware_110911

Go here to check your computer and fix it if you are infected: http://www.dcwg.org/

Just read and follow instructions. Make sure you choose the right link for your country.

Someone on our lovely forum made a local CSS rule/file that would prevent Noory's face from loading at the top of the coast page. This needs to be posted here. Also ... Nobel Peace prize for said CSS trick

Ever need to run an old DOS 16bit application that doesn't work in Windows 7 64bit?
Or want to play an old 1990s DOS game like Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, or the Tex Murphy series?

The solution is the free DOSBOX x86 emulator program that works with modern hardware and modern OS including Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista and 7, Linux and FreeBSD.
It even emulates the special old DOS game supported hardware, like VESA compatible super-VGA video cards, Soundblaster sound card, even can adjust the speed of the emulated CPU:

I cant remember the last time i used dosbox.. but i think it was to play rogue squadron or... maybe X-wing?? lately I've been stuck playing games from 2000-2010 era.

I noticed you listed some "Karenware..."

She died in her sleep on April 12, 2011 - her server remains operative, but may stop at any time. Information from her brother, obituary, and other sources are below. If you're a fan of her work, alll her freeware is still available on her website.

PS - doin' fine MV. Now that the space shuttle program is defunct, I don't know what to do with all my computing power. No matter how hard I try, I can't get my processor to run at greater than 30% capacity... except when I used Handbrake, which is a complete piece of shit. I use a GREAT piece of freeware for video; I'll post about it soon - puts all others converters to shame.

RIP Karen... don't know what i would do without yer alarm

When I first installed Windows 7 I found it didn't have a simple clipboard viewer, so I discovered Karen's Clipboard viewer.
However months later I discovered you could copy the old clipboard viewer .exe from Windows XP over for use in Windows 7.

I've been using this guitar tuning PC software for three years. The graphics are basic. Includes five common preset tunings from E to Eb, then 39 custom presets.  I also have it on my old ThinkPad laptop. I use it more than any portable electronic tuner. There is a newer AP Tuner out there, but I don't know if it nags.

The old Audio Phonics website is for sale, but I found the one I've been using on softpedia. Fortunately, there's no nag on this version, but unfortunately, no Nag Hammadi either. If you want to transpose the Gnostic messianic Hammer On, Pull Offs a la Melchizedek's inverted riffs, you're on your own.  (hint: study T___ I____)

VLC Media Player,Video LAN ,I just go to filehippo.com .
filehippo has an update checker that  keeps things updated and will inform you when anything else is in 'Beta' .Lets you choose to update or not.
Updating Adobe PDF is hit or miss.Seems like it fails to update 2 out of 3 times.I usually avoid them till they go up a whole number.
I tend to use the hippo or MajorGeek to either look or download things.

I use 'Start Page' or Ixquick for my home page-search engine as they don't track your searches

Yes, old post, I know.
If you really want to tax your processor, try pov-ray. It's a beautiful little ray tracing freeware that should put your cpu(s) through their paces. I haven't seen it mentioned on this thread yet.

Best freeware of all time ? Linux Operating System. (You guys knew that was coming, right ? ) ;)

OK, for everyone that doesn't want to upgrade to win 10 - hell, I know some peeps that are still running Win2000 happily, here's a site where you can get older versions of freeware / shareware that will run on the older systems.  http://www.oldapps.com/ They may not have every old version, but they have a lot. ;)

Check these sites too for freeware. I haven't had problems w/ the DLs containing malware or other assorted nasties.

How do you find Start Page? I thought it didn't seem to yield as many or as fruitful results as Google. I guess I just thought that if the Devil wanted to track what porn I watch who am I to deprive him of that. You know he's just very desperately lonely, right?  ;)

Startpage and Ixquick are meta-engines that pull their results from Google, Bing, Yahoo, and others. Once in a great while their servers are down, but not much.

Who would like a clandestine tunneling script that connects HTTP cookies on remote machines ? Think about the implications of that for a second. :o  8)

Doesn't look like anybody yet has mentioned the GIMP -- Graphic Image Manipulation Program.  https://www.gimp.org  The interface takes some getting used to, but it's a very powerful graphics program.

Dyna-X

I really like small programs with simple interfaces that are designed to do a specific task and do the said task flawlessly.

Here is my favorite mp3 player:
The 1 by 1 mp3 player!

http://mpesch3.de1.cc/1by1.html

My favorite game - soothes the nerves - Crystal Office Systems Tetris (1 MB)
http://crystal-office-tetris.findmysoft.com/

BTW, Praise MV for mentioning ReactOS (Windows Clone) at the beginning of this thread - they have come a long ways since then, but hopefully will get something to the beta state soon and forever free users that are tired of the BS from Microsoft Hell.

I guess I come from a different school of thought where concepts like bloat, convergence and creating huge suites that require constant updates and putting things in "clouds", having programs that need to be online all the time, and sometimes even connect with social media are all kind of hokey. Whatever happened to the program that you installed, it did its job until the computer died and once it did you simply installed it on the new machine?

Ciardelo

Several of my favorite programs have suffered from "over-development" I guess it's from programmers trying to justify their jobs and make changes whether or not the program needed it. Not freeware (anymore) but the one that comes to my mind is ACDSee. It was a great little picture viewer until they ruined it by adding on way too much crap. I know there are other great alternatives to it but I never have liked any of them as much as I liked the original ACDSee.

Aaarrgh, so true.  My pet peeve.  Simple elegant solutions turned into bloated monsters with broken interfaces & useless features.

That vexes me too no end.  I thought I'd gotten off the treadmill by using Linux, but then when it came to installing it in another machine and using a new r.f. transceiver, getting a driver to work with it was a challenge.  No dice with the old Red Hat Linux I had, and of course they said, we can't support something that old.  Wait, what?  Linux was supposed to always look the same to the peripherals, wasn't it?  What is this about "versions" of Linux?  I mean, sure, you can add on to it, but all the parts should be mix & match, right?  Nope.  In a sense it's worse than with Microsoft or Apple, in that every program has a chain of dependencies, so instead of having to update one big whopping package, a bunch of things need to be updated if you want to run something new.  The thing I thought was good about Linux was it not making changes behind my back, but I found myself with a similar situation of needing to go online with package mgrs.  Sure, you theoretically could monitor all the changes, but the bother was so great it was best to just let it go.
