There have been weather holds delaying the parachute jump from the edge of space by Felix Baumgartner, but they're inflating his paper-thin super-fragile 55-story balloon npw. http://gizmodo.com/5950136/watch-the-first-human-supersonic-space-jump-updating-live?post=53351226 He's attempting to best Captain Joe Kittinger's 1960 jump from the stratosphere.

The live feed is here: http://www.redbullstratos.com/live

*EDIT*ATTEMPT ABORTED FOR TODAY Winds are too high. Of course, now I'm wondering how in New Mexico they're ever going to get the 3mph winds they say they need to launch.

This is pretty cool thanks for the links.

ziznak

Today was not the day I guess.

coaster

I know it's not the same as live, but I believe Discovery Channel is replaying it off and on today.  I turned the channel a bit ago, and they were replaying it then.

MV/Liberace!

anybody know where to find video of the whole thing from beginning to end?  i know it has to be out there in some form, but i can't find it.

Baumgartner apparently topped out at 833.9 mph or Mach 1.24. Or faster than the first generation of jet fighters. Astounding. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_SUPERSONIC_SKYDIVER?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2012-10-14-11-33-29

That's insane.  I wonder what it felt like.   :o  He really nailed that landing.

Isn't that incredible? He jumps from 24 miles above earth, and he lands standing.

This was one of the most amazing and inspiring things I've seen.

And it will pay dividends going forward:

"Baumgartner's death-defying jump ... yielded a wealth of information about the punishing effects of extreme speed and altitude on the human body â€" insights that could inform the development of improved spacesuits, new training procedures and emergency medical treatment."

onan

Although I do find this to be amazing, I question what good it will do other than sell some more red bull. This seems much more like sizzle than steak.

Pragmier

Company sponsors exciting event with potential scientific benefits - this is the free market gone good. Hell yeah I hope they sell more product.

onan

Other than hype, I don't see much in the way of benefit. I am pretty sure any potential scientific stuff has already been discovered. I could be wrong. Would the scientific discoveries that may be found be the property of Red Bull?

As I said I do find it amazing. so is bungie jumping but other than cheering I don't see any practical application.

Yeah I am wearing my buzz kill cap.
