Universal Basic Income (UBI)
« on: February 05, 2018, 06:36:16 PM »
....The mayor of Stockton, California, is leading an experiment with “universal basic income,” which is set to start by giving low-income residents $500 a month, no questions asked.

Mayor Michael Tubbs calls his city “ground zero” for issues like wage stagnation, rising housing prices and loss of middle-class jobs that affect the nation.

The Central Valley city went bankrupt in 2012, and for decades it has been trying to diversify its agriculture-based economy.

“I feel that as mayor it’s my responsibility to do all I could to begin figuring out what’s the best way to make sure that folks in our community have a real economic floor,” Tubbs said....

The last sentence in the article is: "Tubbs thinks the UBI experiment will show that Stockton’s best bet is to invest in its own people."

Should be an interesting experiment. I'd be in favor of UBI under certain circumstances, the main one being that it'd be privately funded.

Soros has already tried it but it wasn’t truly universal. You had to convince him you were a democrat, communist or socialist.

So Z, how would you conceive private funding would work?  That part has me baffled.

As the WND article mentioned not a "new" idea. Also interesting that the area was in bankruptcy previously (why can't individuals use bankruptcy for things like tax or student loan debt?) The private funding thing makes me think that some of the dotcom zillionaires want to recreate a neo-feudal system: even back then shares of crops were allowed for subsistence. (I recall, can't find reference now, in some lefty/anarchist forum that in terms of working hours serfs, crofters, peasants, etc were "better off" than modern day workers.  ;) )

Don't really know, but I'd rather see Soros and the Silicon Valley and Hollywood folks who're in favor of it get together and fund it rather than tax payers. But then I guess it'd be their business who they determined worthy so, you're right, it wouldn't really be "universal".

Yeah, I'd have no problem with neo-feudalism, leftist anarchism, communism and so on, under certain circumstances, the main one being that they'd be voluntary, lol.

It would take a while to work through all the pitfalls that will confront Stockton, but without rent control, rents within the city limits will rise and homelessness will become a scourge. New construction just outside the city limits will take up the demand for people that work in Stockton but can’t afford to live there, city government will expand to cover rent control and soon you will have a mini-NYC without the musicals and great pizza.

Jerry Brown needs to get Google and some others from SillyValley to move their asses out to Stockton. The place has crazy potential. They used to have a Naval supply base. Still have a deep water port. Ie they should have waterfront condos and shopping centers etc... The base was closed by Feinstein 20 years ago. She and Boxer were great at closing military bases screwing several communities in California that relied on these bases for their survival. Overnight many turned to dust. Stockton was one.

If they could get a few tech companies to go there the place would blow up. Ocean access. Waterfront living. Warm weather. The place could be awesome. Right now it’s Oakland light. A huge dump that more socialist ideas will do nothing to fix. Just maintain the dump that it is. Like all D controlled cities.

Spreading the wealth of Silicon Valley around CA would do a ton for the state. Brown could make it happen. It would create real jobs so people could provide for themselves and pursue the American dream instead of begging for crumbs handed out.

Edit: they’ll even have a trillion dollar speed train...someday 😂😂😂

In the past several magnates, "visionaries," cults, and religious sects tried unique ideas to make a utopia, or at least somewhat, varying effectiveness. Some, the obvious, but also smaller like Post, Ford, etc. A lot of talk recently has been around where Amazon's new place will go....why not go all-in and try take some broken city, abandoned base etc and make a go of it? Or, maybe better, buy up some land in very rural areas and start a new one without baggage of undesirables, high taxes, poorly designed infrastructure, etc. Not necessarily there but somewhere where there is some underutilized infrastructure location and maybe even some workers? And go somewhere that doesn't make traffic worse. I seem to recall (can't find source now) of some SA country allowing a "private city" several years ago, not sure if that ever got done.
ps: well aware that most fail and also much abuse has been done in search of utopias.  But still interesting and, maybe, one will finally get it right?

Sounds like Stockton does have a lot of untapped potential. I'm thinking that to encourage the jump-start, once they get the Bullet Train connected, they could widen the experiment and make the fare free so long as you disembark in Stockton.

Still, far too costly.
