Yeah, it's quite a bit better than the default Microsoft media player.

Works well. Only issue I've ever had was when I messed with video settings for one old movie and then had to figure out how to restore default settings because it made other movies look bad. But that is a user issue.

Mostly porn.

But to answer your question, it's great. Been using it since at least 2005ish. I enjoy the extremely advanced options it offers, as well as the ability to play damn near everything. If you know what you're doing, it can be used to create "local archives" of some types of streaming video content.

I never had a problem with it for Linux or Windows.  (Wait...is there a Windows version?  I thought I used one.)

I mainly use VLC for watching videos on my computer, but I will say that it doesn't play everything perfectly. Seems like very high quality video or certain codecs don't play well with it so you get distortions and other video errors. I ended up installing another player (the name of which is escaping me at the moment), which plays those sorts of videos flawlessly so the issue wasn't hardware based.

vlc has had some problems with decoding UHD/4K video (stuttering/chopping etc.).  i have a beast of a machine and you'd think i'm on my packard bell from 1995 when playing 4K videos i've downloaded.  i haven't tried in a while, so the issue might be fixed, but reading around i learned it was a bug that was on the list of upcoming fixes.

Yeah sounds similar to the issues I was having. There were some files I was watching on VLC that became so graphically distorted after a minute or two of playing fine that you couldn't see what was happening. I installed SMplayer based on somebody's recommendation (after troubleshooting VLC with no success), and it plays those files with zero issues at all.

I still use VLC for most videos though.

There's an old trick for smoothing out h.264 video playback in VLC. It involves telling it to "skip loop filter."

The loop filter (kind of a deblocking filter) is used to smooth out the video picture in post-processing. Which sucks up processing power. So turning it off lets frames render faster. This is, of course, a trade-off. Because you may see a slight decrease in video quality.

what's hilarious is that i can turn around and play a 40GB 4K movie over the local network on a puck shaped nexus player using BSplayer and it won't drop a frame.

Yes! The analog remote, which consisted of getting off your butt, walking over to the tv and turning the dial. Fortunately there were maybe 5 channels so you really didnít need to flip around.

The wall art is the key to any high end entertainment room.

I am going to find one of those and fabricate it to fit my flat screen without ruining the console. I loved that look. I'll put risers on the feet or build a compatible frame to get it 18 inches off the ground. Kinda like rednecks who install lift kits on their trucks. 8)

That was analog but also digital as concerns VHF.  UHF tuners were still non-digital analog, as they allowed & required continuous increments of tuning, radio dial style.

Yeah, VLC is good, used it for years - if using it to stream audio, it may 'loop' if the stream drops, but most players I've used will loop on the last buffer after a drop, at times.

Here's  how we had to tune TV during my high school years. Only had 3 channels out here in the desert, we'd be lucky if even one came in with a reasonable signal (Blonder Tongue BT-70):
