be "ready to fight [North Korea] tonight,"

We should always "be prepared" but I still question using this type of rhetoric in a public forum, especially when the adversary mentioned is mentally unbalanced, paranoid, and whose country is starving and corrupt. It could, of course, been an issue of translation or "aggressive" reporting by the Japanese paper, but UPI picked it up so?

I agree that jingoistic or unnecessarily provocative rehetoric serves no good purpose but bear in mind that the Admiral is addressing the troops at a flag level change of command ceremony at the very "tip of the spear."  I think the admonition to be ready to fight is appropriate for the time and the place.

What ever.  As a Marine, we were always being told to be prepared to go to war at a moments notice.  What's the big deal?

“We are sending an armada. Very powerful,” Trump said during an interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo. “We have submarines. Very powerful. Far more powerful than the aircraft carrier. That, I can tell you.”

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/04/11/us-navy-carrier-strike-group-sets-its-sights-on-north-korea.html

On 10 April 2017, North Korea's Foreign Ministry issued a statement warning that the US carrier strike group's deployment showed that the US's "reckless moves for invading" had "reached a serious phrase," adding that Pyongyang would defend itself against such "reckless acts of aggression." On 11 April 2017, the foreign ministry spokesman said "We will take the toughest counteraction against the provocateurs in order to defend ourselves by powerful force of arms... We will hold the US wholly accountable for the catastrophic consequences to be entailed by its outrageous actions."

A US preemptive strike against North Korea could result in massive civilian casualties in South Korea. Vasily Kashin, senior researcher at the Institute of Far Eastern Studies, issued the warning in his contribution to the Russian daily Izvestiya on 11 April 2017. Kashin said US precision strikes could destroy some of the North’s key facilities such as the Yongbyon nuclear site, but it would be difficult to remove all its nuclear materials, weapons and missiles. The expert also projected that Pyongyang would turn to its asymmetric military capabilities to counter such action by the US, making massive civilian casualties inevitable. He added that the North’s counterattack would not deal a severe blow to US troops, however South Korea's capital region, with a population of 25 million, is within the range of the North’s artillery attack.

With Vinson are two Burke DD's Meyer and Murphy and a single Ticonderoga CG Lake Champlain - throw in a couple of attack subs and it's hardly an Armada.  It just highlights the current pitiful state of the US Navy.

Seems like the Japanese are going to help screen the Vinson.   I'm sure the Chinese leadership want Kim gone as much as anyone but this won't make them happy.

All that follows is information available to the public that might give you some food for thought

I have three words for you:  KILL ON LAUNCH.  In the boost phase a ballistic missile is highly vulnerable.  It can be destroyed by pure kinetics without their being an explosion. (Think smart rocks.)
I would imagine that there are a swarm of drones over NK as we speak.

NK is a relatively small country and is part of a peninsula. Being as narrow as 125 KM at its center,  it is virtually all in a litoral and any point in the country is within easy reach of seaborne weapons.  The Navy converted four Ohio Class submarines that were Trident Missile launch platforms to launch land attack and anti ship cruise missiles. This was done because of a limitation on intercontinental ballistic missiles/warheads imposed by the START treaty.  The converted ships which were formerly SSBNs were redesignated SSGN and they each carry 154 cruise missiles in place of the 24 Trident missiles.  Within the terms of the START treaty, cruise missiles can be tipped with nuclear warheads that produce a yield that places them in the category of a tactical versus a strategic weapon.

In my opinion the VIncent Battle Group is for show at this point.  However, if Kim were to be crazy enough to launch missiles at it and they are not destroyed on launch, the 5 Aegis Combat System equipped ships in the BG would be more than sufficient to knock them down.  What would follow would be a devasting attack from the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea and South Korea that will make the shock and awe of Operation Iraqui Freedom look like a small town fireworks display.

The USS MICHIGAN just pulled into port in South Korea.  The MICHIGAN is one of four converted Trident boomers that now carry 150+ cruise missiles that I mentioned in an earlier post.  It can also carry a SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team (SDVT).  This used to be called gunboat diplomacy.

I get 'show of force' but I'd rather them run silent, run deep. One never knows when/why needed and don't like enemies various and sundry knowing where they are.

I agree.

There could be something else, though, going on beneath the surface.  No pun intended, for the most part.

Yeah. And NEVER apologize for puns. They are fun, and weaker/lame they are the more funny! INTEND them even!

Thanks for posting on this. I'm very concerned about the NK situation, but not too knowledgable about this stuff.

There's a lot of stuff on the Internet that is wild rumors, of course.

I used to love those Korean exercises.  The ROK's take their shit seriously.

The North's official KCNA news agency said on May 2nd: "The reckless military provocation is pushing the situation on the Korean peninsula closer to the brink of nuclear war.

"Any military provocation against the DPRK will precisely mean a total war which will lead to the final doom of the US."
