Quote from: WOTR on October 16, 2022, 12:28:56 AMNow you have reminded me that I have not told of recent events on this site yet... I will try to give the brief version.

A couple of weeks back, I was walking down the alley and a neighbour who has lived in the house for several years had his garage door open, and there were three of them enjoying beers- him and two friends. A somewhat larger lady of around 55 and her rather unkempt husband joined the thirty something resident. The owner mentioned one of my vehicles in the front driveway, and his friend left to look at it. I stayed for around an hour talking and the woman became somewhat upset that her husband was not back, and said that she was sure he would be gone the night.

I went home to bed, looked in the alley, and saw him with his phone out (my vehicle was around front and the neighbour is across the street so he should not really be in my alley.) I went out and told him I would meet him around front to look at the vehicle. He came around and said he needed to use the washroom. I got a bad feeling- but what the hell. So I waited in the hallway and a few minutes later he came out with his pants around his thighs pulling his pocket out and asking if I could help him find his "rock." I declined.

He then asked if I would like to spend 5 minutes in the dark with him. I declined. He told me that he would let me do anything I wanted. I declined. He pulled out his phone to a porn site and told me that I could pick a video and he would do anything that the woman in the video did. I declined. Then he turned around in the doorway of my washroom, bent over, touched his toes and asked if I liked the view (he was wearing womens underwear.) I informed him it did nothing for me and the he should probably leave.

He told me he just wanted to take another hit, and pulled out his beer can crack pipe. I told him to go ahead and then it was time to leave. I told him that I had a woman- I assume he noticed the lack of womens toiletries on the counter and told me he did too- but they were not here. He continued to proposition me on the way out and down the drive with his wife across the street and three doors down.

Anyhow, it ended with him telling me that he would be in my alley if I changed my mind and my taking the trigger lock off my shotgun and putting a hunting knife in a sheath beside me in bed before drifting off to sleep.

Point being, I wonder if she turns a blind eye to his midnight alley rendezvous? I mean, she suspected he was not coming home- she has to have some idea (and he is fortunate that I am not somebody who would blacken his eye and toss him down my stairs removing him from my property.)

I thank you for reminding me of one of the more surreal evenings in recent memory. And in case anybody is wondering, I have noticed his truck in my neighbours alley a couple of times since...

After all the effort he put in and not so much as a consolatory handjob to send him on his way? I thought you Canadians were supposed to be nice?

I was thinking about him the other day. His schtick was that the Russians had been playing possum all these years, and they were much stronger than they have been letting on. At some point they will launch a sneak attack on the West and wipe us all out. That obviously isn't what is happening so his whole thesis has been buggered, so he will probably lie low until he can figure out some way to finesse his way out of it. Either that, or he's poisoned himself with all that garbage storable food that they love to promote so much.

Got it. I just wish I had a time machine to go back and tell Khruschev that all he had to do was say they are "for defensive purposes" for Cuba and despite all of the historical evidence to the contrary, he would be taken at his word. Do you honestly think that the Russians see nuclear weapons on their boarder that could be used for offensive purposes as something that is just there for defense and should say "please station them there- your track record says that we should trust you."

I already told you, NATO is a defensive alliance, it's written in their treaty. It's fascinating that you actually think Putin is more trustworthy than the west.

Quote from: WOTR on October 10, 2022, 09:52:49 PMOff to Hitler already? Seems a tad early at only page 10.

I will ask if you can think of a single country that the US / Britain / "the west" has not invaded, occupied, declared war on, overthrown the government or doped tens of thousand of bombs from drones on in the last century? If any invasion of any land is cause for WWIII and killing off what is left of our economy, then I would say that we beat Putin to that 100 times over. (or is it only because it is the Ukraine and a "friendly" country that makes them count where all of the others did not?)

Perhaps I should ask if the US should have just allowed the Russian warheads in Cuba? If the answer is no, then why should Putin applaud NATO on his boarder?

NATO is a defensive alliance, it's not a hostile invasion force. They only go into action of one of them is attacked (Article 5). The fact that you can conflate that with the Cuban Missile Crisis shows how deep the Russian propaganda has got into people. Khrushchev was actively using the nukes as a threat.

Was Chamberlin correct or should he have just stuck to his 'piece of paper' from Adolf? I know he was superseded by Churchill who carried it through but who started that little scrap in the playground?

Actually, there's a good case to be made that WW2 started with the Mukden Incident and the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. That destabilised everything and set the ball rolling.

But then, when it comes down to it, you don't give a fuck about any of it. A total bugfuck state like Wyoming, that has about three people in it, is allowed two senators like everyone else, but you drop your knitting because 5% of people want to be treated like everyone else. It's just as well that MD doesn't have any friends, because he'd get raped every time he had the boys round for poker night (by the way, that's not the same poker night that K_Dubb gets up to in the seamier purlieus of Seattle).

This whole 'give Putin what he wants and then maybe he'll go away' can not possibly work. People like MD are typical chicken hawks, they love to sound tough if it doesn't involve any cost to them. It also just shows how effective the Russian propaganda is, because people like that spout it without giving it a second thought.

Quote from: Rix Gins on September 28, 2022, 02:54:08 AMLove those Cockney accents, but then I love all things London, England. A favorite English actor, the late great Barry Foster spoke with a Cockney accent in some of his rolls. I guess he was just acting though, because he grew up in West London.

I appreciate the info on Mr. Davis. Did some digging and his first wife wrote a book about him. The Wars of Rosie: Hard Knocks, Endurance and the 'George Davis Is Innocent' Campaign in 2008. I'm thinking of purchasing a copy of it on Amazon.

Barry Foster, otherwise known as Van der Valk (cue that music!). I suppose that role was a bit of a two-edged sword because when he died he was just known as 'that guy who played Van der Valk', which was a bit of a shame. I have a vague memory of him in an episode of Inspector Morse too and he was very good in that. I think he was also the villain in that Hitchcock film 'Frenzy'. One of those underrated actors, definitely. A bit like Harry H Corbett, who ended up being known for one role in a sitcom, but at one time he was tipped to be the next Brando.

The East End has an odd attitude towards its villains. The Krays were a notoriously nasty pair, but they are still regarded as heroes in certain parts of London because they were nice to their mother and beat up some of the other villains. That attitude probably goes back several hundred years to people like Jack Shepherd, who were regarded as folk heroes by the locals for the all the times he managed to get out of prison. Quite often, when they were hanging criminals they would ride through London in all their finery and wave to cheering crowds on the way to the gallows. Peter Ackroyd has written a book all about London, if you're interested. Tyburn, where they used to hang most of them, is now known as Marble Arch. Smithfield, which is now the main meat market in London, used to be the place that they burned heretics back in the 17th Century. There's all sorts of interesting history to be found in London.

Quote from: Rix Gins on September 27, 2022, 12:08:35 AMThat was a fun video, Sredni.  Thank you.

You're welcome. Here's annuver about the Cockney accent, which is 'ow you speak if you are born wivvin the sahnd o' Bow bells. That being the church of St Mary le Bow in Cheapside.

You'll see a bit of graffiti in the first few minutes saying 'G Davis is innocent'. That refers to an armed robber called George Davis, who certainly wasn't innocent, but he had a big following at the time and some of his supporters once dug up a cricket pitch in the '70s and ruined a Test match as a protest about him.

This is a fascinating little news report all about a vanished side of London. There are a few left but not many now. It shows how accents have changed over a few short decades too. Well worth a few minutes of your time.

Quote from: K_Dubb on September 22, 2022, 04:23:56 PMI'm not  :-\ I used to be able to get the Heinz right down the street and once in a blue moon would pick one up with some Bird's Custard Powder, usually when a new season of Downton Abbey came out.  It is bad, spotted dick should not be a sponge but an old-fashioned boiled suet pudding with the density of a cannonball, but it did have that fusty British taste.  Sort of hate-eating.  I feel the same way about Norwegian cod cakes, I never really liked them growing up but will pick them up once in a while to remind myself how awful they are.

I'd be surprised if they had any suet in them, they are more like treacle puddings with a few currants shoved in, that's about it. There's no reason they can't make them properly, because Fray Bentos steak and kidney puddings don't skimp on the suet, I think they just believe that everyone is so ignorant that they won't even question what they are being given. Anyway, you can't appreciate a proper suet pudding unless you are living here on one of those damp, cold miserable days and the only thing that can stop you from swilling down a litre or two of window cleaning fluid in sheer misery and desperation is a good old 'ribsticker', as my grandmother used to call them.

By the way, I am currently re-reading Martin Chuzzlewit. Boy, did Dickens nail you bastards to a 'T'. It was controversial at the time and he had to do some reverse-gearing afterwards, but his withering assessment has more than stood the test of time. I'll have to buy another copy because the one I have now is covered in my comments like 'too fucking right!', and 'tell it, big boy!'.
