I figured a radio built nearly 20 years later would incorporate technology as good as what I had had at a reasonable price. I eventually replaced it with a pocket sized Grundig, in fact listened to VoA on that unit in Waterford, Ireland on 9/11.

Just out of curiosity, was the Grundig you had a Yacht Boy 400 model (or better yet, a 500)?  Or a Grundig eTraveller VII, perhaps?
