It's been a long time, gang!  The M Ed is D One. Rumor has it I have a job - but the paperwork seems to be taking forever.

I'll try to spend more time here now.  I've missed this place.

I really love apocalyptic-themed stories.  I'm totally willing to suspend all reason to enjoy them.  But, THE REAPING turned out to be a a plague of biblical proportions itself.  The acting was mediocre, the story jumped all over the place.  the inconsistencies were GLARING even for this genre.  Some of it had to be bad editing.  In fact, whoever edited this film should have his or her brain clipped into pieces and left on the floor.

It was late - I was too lazy to search Amazon for another film - so I suffered though it. 1 hr. 39 min of my life I will never get back!

Exactly what I thought.  Apologies to b_dubb...
I mean, the guy calls his college-age kids "Itchy and Scratchy" in public....

He does a morning drive show in the Twin Cities area - he started calling them that when they were very young to protect them.

seeing people suffer generally makes me sad.  rich or poor.  there's a whole mess of circumstance that goes into fucking someone up like that.  and i won't pass judgement.

I agree b_dubb.

I do feel she was an enormous talent. I loved her humor, her honesty, her poetry, and her gritty contralto voice. Was she controversial? Hell yes.  But, IMO, most of the fussing about her was petty 'better than' bullshit.  Worse, much of it was misogynistic. While many male celebrities live outrageous lives, and live them more publicly than Winehouse, the way we criticize them seems somehow less hateful and hostile.  (There are exceptions, of course, there are always exceptions to generalizations.)

Was Amy Winehouse a beacon of strength and virtue?  NO!  But how many of us are?  How many of our lives could stand up to the scrutiny celebrites endure?  And, Winehouse was not the media whore so many celebrites are. She did nothing to attract the attention she received other than to be eccentric, and, when her inner demons were not driving her to drugs, an engaging performer.

I liked Edward Champion's blog post addressing those who loved to hate her.

Many will disagree. it goes without saying that that is their right. What i find distasteful are not the arguments over her talent, or the degree to which she brought her end upon herself.  What i find distasteful are the (thankfully few - and elsewhere - here people seem to well balanced) posts that actually celebrate her death, as if it is some cultural victory.

I think the occasional guilty person who gets away with it is a sign that our justice system isn't totally broken.

That much I agree with.  It's what the "Jury of Peers" is about, after all.

I have to followed the details of this case - does anyone here know how on earth the woman got off?

I don't know if mental health treatment would be effective for her or not, and I'm not particularly "bloodthirsty" - but from what little I have read, it seemed like such a slam-dunk!

I understand "innocent until proven guilty" - but I also understand how defence lawyers  will turn themselves inside out to create "reasonable doubt" (as they should, it's their job).  Does anyone know what other possible scenarios were presented that could have possibly left doubt that this woman was, at least, complicit after the fact?

I don't want to be a nerd but...

Netflix is now streaming Star Trek Voyager, 7 seasons.  Ian has referred to himself as the Captain Janeway of the Coast franchise.  The series is less about space and aliens, and more about humanistic elements of getting along.  Formerly warring forces united in a mission for a decades long journey to return to earth after being stranded in a distant quadrant.  It's a lot like us, now.

thanks so much for letting me know.  It's going to the top of my que Right Now!

Ana, you have hit upon a tremendous dread of mine. I haven't shaved my upper lip since July 22,1994(when I was 19) and have the horrible feeling that if I did shave it...well, I'd look like a rodent or worse, one of Hitler's henchmen or something.

Until that fear subsides, I will continue to look like a "heavy" from a 1973 Quinn Martin production...or my avatar(but I'd never sink to wearing turtleneck)

Just made me realize that in 30 years, i have only seen my son's dad w/o his mustash ONCE.  the beard comes and goes - but that stash stays.

That was well done EvB!  I love that type of cultural harvesting of biblical stuff.  I am an enthusiastic amateur biblical scavenger hunt player myself, always finding good things to ponder in the hippie brain.  Mostly, I feel that one should leave this stuff to the amateurs as the pros are always always on the take.

GREAT! It is fun, isn't it?

It was a Biblical reference. As Punnett might tell us, Onan's main sin wasn't masturbation, but my reply fit the theme of the other post. It was a sad mix of a religious joke and a sexual snark. Let's pretend that it never happened. ;-)

Yes Jethro, i got what you meant.  My point (and sorry for being obscure here - you didn't see the original post I'm making reference to and can't find it) is that our Onan's name turned out to have nothing to do with the biblical Onan at all.

Anyway, you now have me on a roll (forgive me?) since I am a bit of an amateur bible freak. You are right, and Ian, or course, would be right, that Onan's sin was not masturbation (though it's a common joke that it was) it was failing to give his brother an heir. (more specifically, it was disobedience to the religious law of the time, and his father's (Judah's) express command that he provide an heir for his diseased brother)  The custom at the time was, if a man died without issue - his brother was supposed to impregnate his wife, and any offspring would be considered his brother's child. Onan didn't want any little Onan's running about who were not his heirs, but rather his brother's. So, while he did, repeatedly, have sex with his sister-in-law (Tamar) as custom demanded, the story goes that each time he "pulled out" to avoid conception. ergo: "spilling his seed upon the ground."

ref: Genisis 38:7-10

Of course, this story takes place in the context of a culture where life was very short, and people relatively few.  Populating the earth and continuing your family line was pretty much "job one" for the average Joe. in a world were life is relatively long, and we have too damned many people anyway, it's hard to relate to.

Dear Reader, are you asleep yet?  ;D

PS:  Jethro, asking me to pretend that a post that is  bible or theology related
"never happend" is like asking a hungry dog to pretend the meet scraps aren't there.  :-X

And for the cynical members here (and you are legion) wait until Fall and give it a go. I double dog dare you.  ;D

I'm not down on EVP - I've heard some fascinating ones. I am, however, someone who likes to discount every "normal" possibility i can imagine before resorting to the paranormal.

I don't know where you live - but here in western Massachusetts there are any number of wildlife sources for this sort of sound (if i understand what you are describing) and these sounds can project form a fair distance, so you would not necessarily hear the animal approach.

The sounds that some critters here (those who are rarely seen but often heard) make will send a chill up your spine even if you know what you are hearing.  Coy-dogs, Fisher 'cats", and northeastern Cougars are just three I can think of off the top of my head. Even rabbits, if in great fear or pain, make a noise that - while not guttural - is loud, piercing, and heartbreaking.

Still Afixer, you may have caught something that can't be explained.  It's all interesting, in any case.
