Interesting, but little known Avenger story from WWII.  I met the son of the Avenger gunner in a pub in the UK back in the 90s, he showed me his Dad's logbook for the sortie.

Well that is an encounter one never would have guessed happened.   Seems like that might have been a good use case for the Roc or Defiant - if they were fast enough.

I don't think they were. The Griffen powered Mk XIV Spitfires could catch them, as could Mosquitoes. Either shooting them down or the very risky method of flying alongside the Doodlebug and using the wing tip to flip them over.

The Roc may have been the worst "fighter" of WWII.  Thankfully (for its crews) they saw very limited combat, but one engagement involved an unarmed German He 59 SAR floatplane.  The He 59 outran the Roc to safety.  This is the He 59.

My favorite WWII plane, and maybe of all time was the P-38 lightening...shot down Yamamto's plane in the Pacific theater...the Brits bought quite a few, but didn't purchase them with the highly recommended superchargers...so, their performance wasn't the best in the European theater...even though the Germans called them the twin tailed devils.

So Chefist likes them drop dead sexy.  Beautiful looking aircraft but more than a handful to fly and you would freeze your cajones
off at high altitudes. Still, hard to argue with your choice there Chefist.  My Dad was a WWII veteran and he loved to see P-38's
overhead - nothing else looked like it and you knew it was friendly.

For me, I like  'em with a little junk in that trunk.  My favorite WWII American fighter is the Grumman F4F Wildcat.

I'm not jealous...much. Nifty overly on the video showing airspeed, altitude and variometer. Model has a wingspan of 6.6 metres.

A little difference in accents here.  :)
Some cool customers though - I'd be wetting down both legs.

Makes me wonder what the procedure is during a rejected takeoff for one of the planes when they're so close together.

This has been making the rounds for the past few days and seems to have finally been picked up by the media. The whole video is 18min long, but the best bit is at 11min when she tries to force her way into the cockpit while saying she can fly the plane before berating the crew.

Disruptive Spirit airlines passenger refuses to leave, forces whole flight to deplane
QuoteA disruptive passenger who was late to board a Spirit Airlines flight from Atlanta to Las Vegas refused to get off, forcing the crew to ask all other passengers to deplane. Safira Allen, 25, recorded herself being asked to leave her flight on May 1, allegedly for arriving late to the gate, but boarding anyway, reported the New York Post. She also filmed herself telling the airline’s crew â€" as well as a security officer â€" that she was “not getting off this plane" before blaming Spirit Airlines for her tardiness in the first place, claiming that Spirit closed the boarding gate 20 minutes earlier than scheduled.

An incident report provided to Fox News by the Atlanta Police Department says Allen had simply run past the gate agent when she was told she was too late to board. Allen claimed to have seen another white passenger board the plane late. She then used explicit language to explain this point, before immediately remarking that she doesn’t cuss.
“Y’all ain’t let the n---- on this m-----f-----. They’re gonna have to put me off, because they’re gonna tell me I was cussing. I don’t even cuss. I’m orthodox. So what are you saying?”

She later likened the crew and security to “terrorists” when security asked her to get out of her seat.

“I’m not getting off this plane to negotiate with no terrorists,” Safira claims, referring to the responding officer. “Cause clearly, they’re the terrorists. They’re terrorizing me in my own country.” Allen also took issue with the airline’s name, saying, “Y’all going to use Jesus’ name, the Holy Spirit? That’s got to change, y’all need to be called something else â€" y’all need to change y’all name because nothing Holy Spirit about this airline.”

The crew soon came over the loudspeaker to apologize for the disruption, and inform all the other passengers that they would need to deplane so the flight could “start the boarding process again” on the same plane.

“If I can’t go to Las Vegas, Nevada, neither can y’all,” Allen yelled. As passengers disembarked, she shouted racially insensitive language at passengers â€" greeting some with the phrase “konichiwa” and offering to speak “Espanol” with others â€" and told several they were going to “hell.”
After the other passengers leave â€" and after Allen berated the crew standing near the cockpit â€" a police officer arrives to escort Allen off the plane, as she continues to yell at security and staff.

QuoteA Hercules airdrop exercise in Southern Germany starring a couple Humvees that 29-year old U.S. Sergeant John T. Skipper of the 173rd Airborne Brigade deliberately cut the parachute straps on to watch them plummet to earth and be destroyed. Skipper has since been court-martialed and convicted 'of destroying property and providing a false official statement,' and dismissed from the military -- albeit not dishonorably.

Federal authorities say 10 people who worked at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport used commercial flights to distribute methamphetamine that was flown to Arizona, New Jersey and elsewhere.

Authorities say starting in 2016, the group used their positions to bypass security and place the meth on flights.

They utilized their jobs with companies at DFW Airport to bypass security measures and in return, got paid for the transportation and delivery of the counterfeit drugs. The suspects would also act as “look-outs” or engage in counter-surveillance to undermine police presence.

They allegedly had 145 pounds of the drug transported to various domestic destinations.

The U.S. Attorney sought to reassure the public about the integrity of airport security.

“We’re working closely with the airlines affected, we’re working with DFW, we’re working with TSA, and others to ensure that we’re addressing whatever security measures were bypassed,” said Cox.

American Airlines released a statement following the arrest of Envoy Air employees:

“At American & Envoy Air, we have an unwavering commitment to the safety and security of our customers & team members. We take this matter very seriously & are cooperating with law enforcement.”

A spokesman at Spirit Airlines told CBS11, Spirit has been advised of this matter and will cooperate fully with law enforcement.

The indictment charges Nelson Pabon, 47, Jean Loui Vargas-Malave, 28, Juan Camacho Melendez, aka “Kendo Kaponi” and “Anthony,” 22, Ruben Benitez-Matienzo, 45, Jose Luis Gaston-Rolon, 24, Joshua Israel Pagan Zapata, 21, Domingo Villafane Martinez, III, 30, Luis Javier Collazo Rosado, aka “Luisito,” 21, Michael LNU, and Cristian David Cruz-Rodriguez, 23, with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a schedule II controlled substance.

I live under a flight path and it’s making my life a living hell

QuoteAirline pilots (fake or otherwise) have cost me some of the greatest moments in my life. Because of their noisy contraptions, I missed my daughter’s first words … was it Mumma or Dadda? (I like to think the latter.) Or the time when my wife got drunk on the sofa and whispered something in my ear … was it “loved” or “loathed”? And what did Manu say to Hadil and Sonya on My Kitchen Rules? All I heard was ROOOAARRRR.

The thing I don’t understand is why these planes must always fly over MY apartment block, when there’s millions of kilometres of sky to choose from. I imagine those smug bastards up there sniggering to each other about it. “Let’s buzz the bloke in unit four again. The one with the plastic pink flamingo in the flower pot on the balcony.”

Yep, these planes are close enough to see, not only the washing on our line, but what size knickers my wife wears: “I do believe she’s now donning a 10, Richard, that diet must be working wonders.”

One of the planes â€" an Airbus A320 â€" came in so low the landing gear knocked our flamingo over.

I should point out that Sydney Airport (which has existed since 1920) has extremely strict noise abatement procedures which includes sending a lot of flights over water and a curfew from 11pm to 6am.

QuoteRail shipment of fuselages, wing assemblies and other commercial aircraft components from source plants in Kansas and Texas to Boeing assembly plants in Renton and Everett, Wash., began in the 1960s. Boeing models from the 707 up to the 777 have had parts shipped by rail, but it’s the 737 that has become the most prominent feature of this unique service. Complete 737 fuselages travel on flatcars, while partial fuselages for larger aircraft, wing sections and other oversized parts are shipped inside custom-built enclosed cars

Nice photo. My grandfather was an instructor pilot for the RAAF, but I've never seen any photos from his time and the only story I heard was of a fully loaded and fueled B-24 crashing on takeoff that killed most of the crew.

May as well go here as anywhere. Today is D Day. On this day in 1944, began the push back of German armour and troops from France. If you ever find yourself in Brittany or Normandy, you'll see and feel a very real gratitude to the American, British, Australian, and other allied troops, pilots and sailors who sacrificed their lives on that and the forthcoming days on those beaches and small towns on the coast.
