The Green Bay game was well worth watching!

How are you doing in the BellGab football pool?

Art Bell

I am not in the pool, but yes it was a good game!

Because over the years they've been the featured games on TV waay too often, and people are tired of them?

Agreed... They do it because NY is the biggest market... Even if the team isn't that particularly good...

College players play for the game, not the paycheck. I love college football. There is nothing better.
Btw, ny/dallas is heating up.

Bears had better stats today except for Rogers'  Praise Aaron ... The QuarterBot

We would have had a chance. But then Cutler happened.... Forte had a Beast first half.

Was a great game though.

Wow. Cowboys. Insane drive.

I love endings like that. I saw this earlier, and it made me laugh. Looks like someone grabbed a screenshot.

Turned out to be a more interesting game than thought during, huh? Though I like baseball, hockey, and college fb better this game turned out pretty interesting/exciting. Too much "clock"/ref stuff etc but that is a part of the game/strategy these days.

My favorite time of the year.  Fall and college football.

One hell of a run from last week.  Like trying to catch a cockroach. ;)

Call me cynic, maybe in Div I schools and sure they have more spirit, possibly, (but look to transfers etc) and facilities. Heck, HS fb arguable is more fun but here look at OUR HS facilities, coaches, promotions, etc. In a small town, or even in a big town, arguably HS players aren't "amateur" much less at the college level- with ability to get into Universities with bad grades/behavior, "summer jobs," scholarships, tutors, video games, facilities and housing, etc. Actually, I think the schools take advantage of them and, maybe, the facade, at least partially, should be eliminated and they should be paid. This might, actually, bring it back to a more sane level. Granted where I am football pays for itself, big time, and doesn't take any money away from academics (and pays for the gal's sports also) but still. Don't get me wrong I love college FB but being a loyal fan/alumni of a "big school" that has done poorly in recent years and even so (where is the "market" here capitalists?) the ticket prices, tailgating ability, parking fees, Foundation fees, Alumni fees, etc increase WAY above performance (ESPN deals withstanding....

They all think they are going pro, every one of them - at least going in.

I much prefer the college game as well

Just saw Ndamukong Suh is in more hot water. When he was here in Nebraska, he was the nicest, most humble kid ever. Even held the door and chatted with my mother once. Always easy to talk to, not a mean bone in his body.  The year he got drafted he was out tearing around in brand new muscle cars up in Detroit. now its suspensions,  and kicking people in the face. Money fucks these kids up.
Hand a young guy a multimillion dollar contract and ask them if its still all about the game. Boy howdy..

Sure college ball has issues.  Nobody is forcing them to play but it has become kind of the minor league for the NFL and no doubt big bucks for certain coaches, schools, and commercial interests, at least for the major schools.  I still can't help loving it.  :)

Honestly the approach soccer takes in most of the world is far more honest to players and fans. And, oddly (considering "socialist" Europe,) more capitalist than most of our sports. Relegation is an awesome thing for drama and competition. And the player development system is better (and safer on players- you don't want to blow out knees, elbows, etc or mistrain good potential young players to be sold.) But, I agree, there is something about the HS, College sports because it also encourages loyalty to your schools and brings back alumni.

The problem with the HP Lovecraft show was the guest, honestly. The idea is amazing, and I'm not sure if you're already a fan, but there are a bunch of others way more qualified to talk about Lovecraft, his role now, his role when he was writing, and his extremely unique perspective as a rationalist writing weird fiction. Even though the guy was a fellow UB alum, he was just not someone that really could sell Lovecraft as he should be to the non-believers.

He made a few good statements, I will say that.

But in terms of Hoagland, I prefer more shows like Levenda and Tim Wallace-Murphy. The subject matter from Tim is so intriguing, and Levenda's stories were just amazing.

the guest was fine i thought..the problem was A..Hoagland seemed to have 0 clue about anything Lovecraft and B..he kept trying to steer the conversation to pluto..not Lovecraft's day and age Pluto but todays Pluto..not saying Hoagie was not prepared just not as brushed up on the facts about Lovecraft as he could have been and probably..it came off at least..never read a Lovecraft story

Sure they don't get a paycheck, but they do get a scholarship. Most of them anyway. I'm not certain how it works, but if they get cut from the team, do they loose the free ride?
I'd say that's a pretty big motivation.
I don't doubt they love playing the game. They have to, to be able to endure the physical trauma.

Usually yes.

And sometimes the walk-ons (scholarships are limited and not every player gets one) are awarded scholarships if they play better than expected

There are/have-been lots of changes and the scholarships, facilities, and tutors alone should be enough motivation; considering the costs now for the normal student (or their parents.) But, unfortunately, many don't appreciate that or are "not college material" except due to their athleticism. I think booster-stuff, out right payoffs, "summer jobs", etc have been curtailed but there still are things that go on. And I don't know the details/settlement with regard to video-games and likenesses deal really. I know there were/are "fringe" benefits also in many circumstances even beyond "big man on campus"...girls specifically to help "show" recruits around campus etc. At least there were. Personally I think this is one reason so many get in trouble later when such things aren't with consent etc (old days brushed the rug and general sense of entitlement.) A lot of programs ARE trying to "clean it up." But that "clean up" doesn't address the economic issues effectively, in my opinion. Both for the alumni, students who want to see games, or the athletes. Simply more about risk management for the schools, branding, and profit making.

Mebee

Has anyone gotten Art's attention and suggested that he should stop blithely repeating false conspiracy-theory rumors as if they were true? Both the thing about the Inuit with the Earth axis tilt AND the thing about the Vatican telescope being called "Lucifer" are patently FALSE.

Depends on school, coach, athletic director etc....some are really good about an injured player being "taken care of" others not as much, though increasingly news, parents, athletes, etc are paying attention to this and so the "market" can work. The issues with concussions and ruined careers is filtering down through the system...if nothing else due to lawsuits and people making choices. Maybe soon the days of a total "walk it off" and "suck it up" mentality will be over but people also don't remember/think that players also, young guys (hell even in the Pros) are competitive and themselves want to "tough it out" (and that is a good thing- within reason.)
