One of the few "new" sources of Art and Knapp material is not working today. I get firefox saying "cannot connect" and the "is it down site" says "site is down for everyone." I hope iHateMedia, Inc hasn't gotten to him or something worse. Too bad.
"SITe" back up! Great news.
ps: Logan, I will send the "tube" pics. I forgot the boxes are in a garage behind a bunch of junk and been busy. (And avoiding wading/organizing that garage in the 103 heat and so much crap I've gotten due to various people's moves and stuff I "had" to have at estate sales etc. Why, for example, did I need to buy an ancient wolf/coyote trap except I thought it might make good decor for a friend's bar and- who wouldn't at a price of a buck!)  ;)

They play this commercial so often on the free antenna channels, but I have to laugh. Maybe it works? Maybe it doesn't? But using some USB from some outfit that advertises on free tv channels? No thanks. And also I've always wondered why the best (non-US) based virus and ransom-wares also come from countries that also put out the supposedly-best rated anti-stuff software like Kaspersky etc? (Though I seem to recall there was a real ransom situation once with one of his family?) And whatever happened to that McAfee app for smartphones and stuff he was talking about? He claims, basically, all smart phones, especially Androids are infected.

Gonna try out Solus

https://solus-project.com/
Sounds like a really good transitional distro if you're coming from Doze. NVIDIA support  built in and a rolling release. 64-bit only. Lots of comments on it's stability. https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=solus
full packagelist  https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=solus&pkglist=true&version=2017.04.18.0#pkglist

Let us know how you like it. It seems to be under heavy development with constant upgrades. Looks to be pretty popular.   :)

well i didnt think skype could blow anymore than it did, but $micro$haft found a way.
there appears to be no way to adjust, set, control, or do anything else with audio in version 5.3 for linux. i have 3 sound cards in my machine, and skype picked one that i do not want to use.since all the guides i found say "select edit (or tools) then preferences" , or "choose the options button then audio (or similar)" and i have none of those available. another guide said to click the options button in the lower l/h corner. i dont have that either.
so skype is now relegated to a IM program, as i cant seem to get a mic to work with it. changing things around would involve alot of work with just about every other program that uses audio on this box. i wont do that for 1 program.
thanks $micro$oft.

MV/Liberace!

Here's something extremely exciting...

Thanks to the marvels of modern technology, you can track visionary, pioneer, and CEO of Vandeven Enterprises, Michael Vandeven, in REAL TIME as he traverses the Atlantic!

If I remember rightly, actual tracking occurs only while the plane is in range of an ADS-B station and then these aircraft tracking websites have a few minutes delay on top.
So... you can track MV's perilous voyage across the ocean in semi real time.

Interesting metal 3D printer company to keep an eye on...

I wonder if one day these will be considered the predecessor to the Start Trek replicator, if we ever get there. It's starting to seem that way to me. Replace the thermoplastic or metal with atoms.  ;)

If they have any of your biometric information:
https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2017/08/01/2017-15423/privacy-act-of-1974-implementation

As a side note. The FBI is the same agency that won't record or video 'interviews' with suspects but instead relies on two-agents interviews and hand-written report: Form 302. So, unless you lawyer up in any contact with them, it will be two agents, and their memory and later hand-written report, against you. The main reason they do this is to get informants and plea-deals because quite easy to 'get' a person on a 18 U.S.C. 1001, at least.

if your running linux/bsd/other *nix (aka osx) you can make your ssh life easier.
create a file (and folder if needed)
mkdir .ssh (if needed)
nano (or other text editor) ~/.ssh/config

in the test editor put :
Host <pick a name such as url>
HostName big.long.url.that.takes.forever.to.type.org
User  user
save and exit

next at the terminal  type :

blah@localhost:~$ ssh url

it will ask for a password (unless you have keys setup)

user@big.long.url.that.takes.forever.to.type.org's password:

type it in and you are in.

chrome to introduce "WebUSB"
about webUSB
Quote from: the article1. Introduction

This section is non-normative.

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) is the de-facto standard for wired peripherals. Most USB devices implement one of roughly a dozen standard "device classes" which specify a way for the device to advertise the features it supports and commands and data formats for using those features. Standard device classes include keyboard, mice, audio, video and storage devices. Operating systems support such devices using the "class driver" provided by the OS vendor. There is however a long tail of devices that do not fit into one of the standardized device classes. These devices require hardware vendors to write native drivers and SDKs in order for developers to take advantage of them and this native code prevents these devices from being used by the web.

The WebUSB API provides a way to safely expose USB device services to the web. It provides an API familiar to developers who have used existing native USB libraries and exposes the device interfaces defined by existing specifications. With this API hardware manufacturers will have the ability to build cross-platform JavaScript SDKs for their devices. This will be good for the web because, instead of waiting for a new kind of device to be popular enough for browsers to provide a specific API, new and innovative hardware can be built for the web from day one.

heres a bright idea, lets expose a webcam "securely" to the internets. wonder how long before its hacked.
how about a usb drive? fun stuff this.

omg Zeebo! WR250! GravitySucks! Y'all are still here! I found my people!

Oh crap, where in the state are you? Hope you're generally alright and safe.

I have friends in Tampa that I've been keeping in close touch with, they chose not to evacuate while Irma passed them. They're in the suburbs and fortunate to have power restored already.

I live a few miles south of Johnson Space Center right next to the gauge that registered 49.40". I am not sure how many lightning strikes were within a mile of me, but somehow I never lost power.

Very interesting Albrecht.  Thanks for posting this.
Another items of note: Kaspersky has been banned from protecting computers in various US government departments. I've always been a bit suspicious and find it odd that we allow(ed) so much foreign software, foreign-made equipment and chips, outsource to foreign/private companies, etc in our systems, infrastructure, military, etc.
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/09/kaspersky-software-banned-from-us-government-agencies/
What is interesting is that McAfee, the somewhat crazy guy, has been talking for years about problems with anti-virus, that they really don't 'do anything' now due to the complexity of the threats, and theories that the same people who make the 'solution' might even have made 'the problem.''
