Ordinary American: "They burn churches in Stockholm? I've never even seen a Black Swede."

Yeah, I'd like to see those bored amateur satanists try that crap on a church that ain't Lutheran. I doubt that they even have the guts to draw a cartoon or a comic book of Muh....artin Luther, yeah, that's the ticket, "Martin Luther".
Hard to believe these guys were ever Vikings that settled Russia (The Rus) and stole/abducted actually a whole lot of Irish women to "accompany" them to Iceland to make Icelanders. Oh, my bad, those were Danes.

But, if I'm correct in my history, the Vikings made it into the middle east and the local Muslims were scared to death of them. I think they believed Vikings ate Muslims or something. In any case, the Swedes/Norwegians etc. had a pretty effective PR in that the locals ran away when they showed up.

The only "black Swedes" are a product of the Africans they took into Sweden who hooked up with the locals. I recall hearing something in the past where Sweden imported 10,000 from the Middle East to make their population less homogenous. It was deemed "too white" by the government. So how many Muslims live in Sweden now?

Members of Mayhem have gone on record saying that burning churches is old hat and the "new arrivals" are now who they want to target. But coverage of that scene has quieted in the past few years.

I'll buy a one-way ticket to Mecca for them. Let them talk tough there. On second thought, I take that back. They likely would cause murders and riots just by saying "arson" and "mosque" in the same sentence. They're fortunate that there aren't Lutheran "jihadists". It seems like most of the viking traits have been drained from the gene pool over there. Granted, there aren't any Swedish versions of Father Coughlin or the crazy Koran-burning preacher, but those silly kids aren't risking life and limb by torching churches when most northern Europeans make Shelby Spong look like Billy Graham. Godless pinkos (kidding)!

Yet another case of synchronicity! I made the same point, in a different way, in my post. Many British and Irish people have viking blood in their veins too. The sea pirates made rock stars look like chaste monks.

Damn straight on that Nucky. Those barbarian bastards rocked Europe. Hell, even William the Conqueror (a.k.a. William the Bastard) was a Norman - basically a french viking. Too bad the Confessor didn't father any kids as the Anglo-Saxons had a viable/effective society going on in Britain prior to the Norman Conquest.  At least I think it was Edward the Confessor (supposedly wiled it to William and then backed out, giving it to Harold). Of course, the Picts (the true Brits according to a Scot I know) would disagree. BTW, I'm 1/8th Danish. How about you?

I have a bit of Finnish and Swedish blood. I'm descended from gallowglass who moved to Ireland too. Poor Harold was between a rock and a hard place. His troops had to fight the Norsemen up north right before the Normans attacked down south. His forces might have beaten those of William if they had been fresh. Speaking of the Anglo-Saxons, they were murdered and persecuted by the Normans in much the same way that the Irish were by the British. The Harrowing of the North is right down there with the Massacre at Drogheda. BTW, tell your friend that the Gaels are the true Scots. ;)

Gallowglass? Uh, no. Glasswegian transplant to the Plantation of Ulster? Forrrrr surrrrrrre. So mine opposed thine. Plenty of "Scots-Irish" with some Huguenot thrown in for some flavor other than the "sweat, piss, jizz and blood" that summed up the Scots-Irish experience for that eminent social commentator, the late Warren Zevon.

And however proud an Orangeman and Roundhead one may be, it's damned hard not to be hangdog about Drogheda.

I stopped researching my roots when that term "horse thieves" kept coming up. I didn't want to dig any further. My mother's father arrived here during the Civil War...in Eire. Roughly summer, 1922.

When it comes to my forebears, mine opposed mine. I have both flavors of Irish in my background. I'm like an ethnic hybrid of you and Eddie. I have yet to find any Roundheads in my genealogical research, though. For the sake of harmony, let's remember the United Irishmen. Protestants and Catholics came together for a free and united Ireland. That was the most harmonious time until the Good Friday Accords. BTW, I thought that you were Italian.

Quote from: ChewMouse on November 16, 2012, 12:14:29 AMIt took one septic uterus in the ER during nursing school clinicals and a nursing instructor yapping in my ear about the days before Roe V. Wade for me to have a long hard sit-down with myself and the issue of abortion.

And I will say not one more word about the issue.

On the other hand, my vocation is treating and caring for very sick babies, some of whom are gestationally young enough to have been legally aborted. When I have a med or nursing student come through the unit, I specifically take them to the micropreemies, and have them place their finger near the baby's hand, and the natural instinct is the preemie will grasp their finger. I then explain that this child could have been legally aborted just yesterday (depends on the state and institution). I have found this to be a gentle, yet effective way to open one's mind to the ethics of abortion.

It is impossible for me to accept septic uteri as a logical argument for the legal termination of otherwise innocent life. I purposefully make the distinction "innocent" to distinguish baby's lives from guilty murderers.

I also recognize I am logically inconsistent with my abortion stance, as I do make exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother. The life of the mother is easy; it's the first two that I rationally would not make an exception to be consistent - but I am not only sensitive to these exceptions, but we all know that to publicly or professionally profess such a stance, would amount to career suicide.

As for legality, Roe v. Wade was an abhorrent legal decision - it is simply not a constitutional issue. Even many liberal scholars agree that the issue is one more suited to the legislative process among the States, and not a constitutional question. Even such incredibly important matters such as viability as defined by SCOTUS are completely and utterly arbitrary.

I'll be happy to expound on the issue, but another time, in a different place. I know I will not change anyone's mind about the issue via a forum, so I don't write about it much. However, let me give a tour of a NICU, and it's possible I could change a few hearts - or better put, the babies themselves might open a few minds.

Your approach is gentle.  It girds against the fact that abortion is a multi-billion dollar industry that will not easily be changed.

Those "Brits" that murdered the Irish were descendents of those frikkin' Normans. Unless I'm mistaken, the Saxons actually promoted those fit to lead into positions of authority whereas the Normans did this "my family is supreme ALWAYS". Typical medieval mentality evolved from that . Of course, the Franks had the same idea with Charles Martel and his grandson Charlemagne.

Look at what William Wallace of Scotland had to put up with that bastard, Edward Long Shanks. Another Norman ass hole.
