I don't know if this qualifies as "world news" especially, but what do you folks think about Fox News parting ways with Sarah Palin?  Has an important and erudite voice been silenced or is our long national nightmare finally over?  (It seems likely that people will view the news in one of these two ways; there doesn't seem to be much middle ground on Sarah.)  I will say that I thought she looked good in her red Naughty Monkey heels.  ;)  The new Sarah looks pretty lean and brittle to me.

MV/Liberace!

i never found palin's commentary on fnc to be particularly original or insightful, to be honest.  maybe fnc feels the same way and that's why she's out.  or maybe she quit.  i don't know.

i don't dislike her.  on the contrary, i think she was the only reason to even consider voting for mccain (although i stayed home in 2008 anyway).  i just feel complete indifference toward her role in american politics post november 2008.

Giving them the NBA more than makes up for the poisoned food/toys they shat upon the USA. You give us shit, we'll really give you a dose of vile whaleshit. Hopefully, the Toronto Raptors vs Washington Bullets Wizards will be the primetime game.

QuoteBig news in the search for dark matter may be coming in about two weeks, the leader of a space-based particle physics experiment said today (Feb. 17) here at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Louisiana's incarceration rate is nearly five times Iran's, 13 times China's and 20 times Germany's.

The article paints a disturbing picture.

In a uniguely Louisiana twist, most prison entrepreneurs are rural sheriffs, who hold tremendous sway in remote parishes ... A good portion of Louisiana law enforcement is financed with dollars legally skimmed off the top of prison operations. In the past two decades, Louisiana's prison population has doubled, costing taxpayers billions while New Orleans continues to lead the nation in homicides.

Can anybody say "Cool Hand Luke?" ;)

In my area parking meters are becoming extinct, so there's one less reason to git da box.

I'm not sure Iran China and Germany are good comparisons.  Maybe Newark, Oakland and Detroit.  Seemed like there were still a lot of unjailed criminals operating in and around New Orleans after Katrina.

The question is, are there any people in jail there that shouldn't be.

If I were a betting man I'd say yes! For these reasons: 1. The judicial system is fallible. 2. There's a high financial incentive to fill prisons. 3. Louisiana is one of two (Oregon being the other) states where a criminal jury can convict by 10-2 vote.

Pfft, everyone knows global warming is a myth.  Ex-President Bush told us so.  <(total sarcasm)

So are we going to fry or freeze?  What will be the next major-global/semi-global/mini-global or localized (whatever) change in climate event?

Yes, and most of them are African-American. I recommend Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/13/business/global/japan-says-it-is-first-to-tap-methane-hydrate-deposit.html?ref=business&_r=0

QuoteJapan said Tuesday that it had extracted gas from offshore deposits of methane hydrate â€" sometimes called “flammable ice” â€" a breakthrough that officials and experts said could be a step toward tapping a promising but still little-understood energy source.

Experts estimate that the carbon found in gas hydrates worldwide totals at least twice the amount of carbon in all of the earth’s other fossil fuels, making it a potential game-changer for energy-poor countries like Japan.

I had never even heard of this.
