Yes.  I didn't work the investigation, but a colleague did.  I also read the mishap report. The failure of what was essentially an explosive bolt did not allow the module to reposition prior to impact.  Instead of landing on the impact attenuation bags, it landed nose down.  Doug Benefield died when his seat tore loose on impact and he went into the instrument panel.

I knew Waniczek, he worked for Northrop when I was assigned to the Special Projects Office.  I worked for Dick Reynolds when he was a three star at WPAFB.  He was a class act. He held a commander's call a few days after 9/11 that was the most inspiring thing I've ever heard.  Good guy, easy to talk to, cared about his people.
Thanks man, it must have been quite a time to be involved.  I bet you've got stories that could fill a book.

The Sea Hawk is another very pretty airplane, in person it comes across as relatively small and eloquent.  They flew combat for both the Brits and the Indians with good success.  The RN's FAA Museum has, or at least had, an airworthy Sea Hawk, but I haven't seen it mentioned as having been flown for several years.
My buddy's uncle owns/flies  a "Hunter Hawker T-7".

He also owns/flies a BAC Jet Provost T4,(pic attached)

The same museum owns a McDonnell CF-101 Voodoo
Here's the link to the collection.

And just a nice pic of an EF-101 "Electric Voodoo", circa 1987.  1 of 2 built

Huh. Those two idiots said last Superbowl that Biden wouldn’t waste money on a flyover like president Trump did. I guess they were just lying douchebags. ???
Never seen that before.

3 subsonic(at that altitude) heavy bombers.

This video is about an engineer who was forced to eject from 1 of the the supersonic capable B-1A prototypes during a test hop.  CG too far aft for wing sweep and about 1/2 way through the video (40:00) there's a CG image of the incident. Nose up 70º+ rocks port and starboard as she falls like a leaf.  Ejection commanded and the minivan sized escape capsule deploys, but a riser fails to shear and the capsule hits hard on the front right nose hard enough to snap the seat adjuster rod(supposedly rated for 40g). The front right and back seater(only B-1 Flight Test Engineer Otto Waniczek-the man in the video) was in 1 of 2 back seats).
Only prototypes 1 through 3 had the escape capsule. Proto-4 had 4 single person more conventional ejection seats, as did the 100 production B-1B variants.

B-1 Ejection test of the B-1 Lancer's Crew Module

Uncle Duke(or anyone else), do you have any realworld memories of that B-1A ejection?

There was a slight hesitation immediately prior to mask application.

I did not watch that video, if it does not outline how McDonald's buys the pork-trimmings from the slaughterhouses and has them formed into a "riblet" shaped patty.  Then it is fake news.  McDonald's buys the pork trimmings (crap from the slaughterhouse floor) after the big pork slaughter for the Holiday Hams.  That is why it is not a year-round thing, and they have that stupid catch-phrase "The McRib is back!"

Gross.

I would not feed that shit to my dog.

They taste awesome though.  It's been quite some time since my last.  2 of them without onions was awesome.

Taking a nice big bite out of a Double Big Mac makes my toes tingle. That's well on its way to being a $10 burger up here.

I've been bingeing on Egg Nog.  Circle-K Premium Egg Nog.  6% M.F.  This year was $2.99/ litre before the holidays, but I just scored a 16 litre crate for $0.99 each.  Froze most of them.  The stuff is like drinking gravy, good gravy though.  If you've got a Circle-K store nearby, check out their eggnog next year.  A few years ago I went around to all the local supermarkets and scored 22 different varieties of eggnog.  The Circle K Premium(pictured) and the with Natrel Eggnog coming in 2nd.

Personally, I think this is a brilliant idea. If they pump enough Calcium Carbonate into the atmosphere, I will not need to keep any on hand in case of skin contact with Hydroflouric acid. I'll just stand outside*

*To explain the (weak) joke... If you are unfamiliar with HF, it is a nasty substance that will penetrate skin and kill deep tissue layers and even dissolve bone for days. And it will do so without any pain (at least for the first several hours.) Deadly crap. But the treatment is a 5 minute flush with water followed by application of Calcium Carbonate to bind with the fluoride ions. And then off to the hospital.
Is that the chemical that was used in series Breaking Bad to dispose of corpses without trace?

Just seeing this thread.  I gotta say, Trebek was a trooper during his battles.  He was on Howard Stern a bit ago and he was stating that during the taping of Jeopardy he was so sick from chemotherapy that he would get back to his dressing room be sick.  He said he would lay on the floor with his face on the cool floor, recover and get back out for the next show.  It couldnt take long to tape a show, IIRC they'd tape a weeks worth of shows in one day.

My brother loves the show, daily watcher, that and Wheel of Fortune. He does well, esp. considering he "listens" to TV as he says.

When we were kids, he would sit at his TV, his face approx. 3-4" from the screen back when he could see but his vision was fading.  He would repeat whatever dollar value was selected and then listen in silence as the actual question was read by Alex, then he would say his answer.  If he got the answer(the question) incorrect, he would say "Nope and then his cumulative score" if he was correct he would make this loud simulated bell noise "ner, ner, ner", then the cumulative number of correct answers for that show and followed by a simulated "crowd applause sound" like the sound  people simulating the sound a crowd in a stadium would make, sometimes cupping their hands around their mouths.

Correct answer="NEER,NEER,NEER- Eight Correct HHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAA"
Wrong answer= "Nope-Eight Correct"

The highlight was when a "Daily Double" was selected. He would bring his face back from the screen, sit up straight, raise and extend his arms upwards whilst making "lobster claw" snapping motions with his 8 fingers and thumbs in precise timing with the oral sound effect of the Daily Double noise.

Yes, this binary way of thinking also happens with the 'vaccine debates' in normal times. Even calling it a 'vaccine debate' starts it off in a wrong direction.  The question/debate should be about a particular vaccine, not all vaccines. Not all vaccines, for all diseases. But for single manufacturer's vaccine for a specific disease (or group of them.) Weigh the risks of the disease. Weigh the risks of the vaccine. Look at longitudinal, and better yet generational, studies. Discuss the efficacy of the vaccine. Discuss the possible side-effects. Discuss the price and cost to the economy and individual. Discuss the prevalence of the disease. The personal risk (for example I don't have much risk of Yellow Fever but if I were traveling to parts of Africa I might get even though the vaccine is not a greatly effective one.) And so on. It is nuts to say ALL vaccines are bad, in all circumstances. Likewise it is NUTS to say that everyone should take EVERY vaccine for EVERY disease.

Great points.

A very entertaining open lines call this morning from a guy named Brent who claimed he is in touch with the spirit of Art Bell.  Seems Bell sustained brain damage during/as a result of his death, so he isn't able to communicate as well as would be expected.  On the plus side, it seems in death Bell gained at least a degree of humility in that he asked Brent to relay his apologies for the way he treated George late in his life.  He feels bad about his behavior.

The caller struck me as a "lite" version of Charles from Elgin, TX; somewhat disjointed and rambling.  The best part was when he told Syratt he really wanted to talk to George, but "he would have to do."  Syratt appeared to take it all in stride.
Shit, I wonder what the Martians do to get high?

Whenever Syrett was on Coast, I imagined his radio broadcast emanating from the CN Tower.  Toronto where he broadcasts from is North Americas 4th largest radio market.

Not yet, physicians are getting it first, at least around here.  My family doc just got his 2nd shot.  My one paramedic friend just got her 1st shot.

I just got my flu shot and this was the first time that I got some side effects.  Nausea, slightly feverish, odd sensations in my fingertips.  Today I feel better.

I remember gobbling tablets of Tamiflu during the 2009 H1N1 "Swine Flu" pandemic which was a Influenza-A virus variant..

My government run Long Term Healthcare Facility(nursing home) covered the cost of the drugs.  My employer couldn't force me to take the drugs, but I wasnt allowed to work unless I had taken the Tamiflu.

Yes. It is wonderful of Justine and Dr. Who to instruct me to use a mask. I know how to use them- I have a video of me standing in a cloud of chlorine gas in full PPE. But it is not an exaggeration to say that my "one time use" mask is on and off over 100 times each day.

Yeah, I could go to the washroom to wash my hands each time. But I have to put on a mask to go there. I could use hand sanitizer 200X each day- but that just isn't happening. I suppose the most obvious answer would be for my government officials to declare that you have to be masked 24/7. You can take your mask off once each day to change it. That would prevent the mentally infirm such as myself from endangering society.

I get that there are people who like to follow rules. I'm guessing that many of them are employed in a profession where they can shout "yes sir." Most people like that naturally follow rules very well. I don't. (BTW- not judging either way.) Not for a virus as deadly as Covid. Now you introduce Ebola to the general population, and I promise to start observing strict protocols. I will also say that if I worked in a long term care home I would. When I visited a hospice (ironically) I did. Day to day? Nope.

But then I think that most people are fatigued. Even those who used to be very strict are starting to slip.
Excellent post.  Clear cogent reasons for not hand sanitizing 200 times a day. NOT a simple "I dont like to follow rules so I dont."  The "black and white" thinking going on in North America is absent from your post.

1)You state that your personal biosecurity isn't at 100% for COVID19 as it's not airborne  If a disease such as ebola was the disease at hand, you biosecurity practices would change.  2) That when you visited a hospice, you adjusted your behaviour. If you were working at a LTCF(Long Term Care Facility) you would also adapt.

You post was a refreshing read in a world of no empathy, from MY side of view only, black and white-all or nothing thinking.  You made decisions based on facts and acted accordingly.  I knew that you were well trained in PPE. The people I interact with make bad choices, mainly out of ignorance, unfortunately many of them are healthcare workers that should know better.

And I agree 100%, people are tiring and are slipping up.   There's one local nursing home that's over 1/2 infected both the residents and the staff.  It's such a sad situation.

I'm in Woodstock ON, IIRC do you live in SW ON, or at least pass through every so often?  No biggie, I'm just curious.

Morgues in South-Western Ontario have had to expand capacity using refrigeration trailers.  Hospital capacities are at risk locally.   We are currently in the midst of a 4 week lockdown.  Only essential services are at work.  Kids home from college are not going back.

The Ontario government was telling us to avoid visiting with people other than ones that you live with.  The high infection rate we are now enjoying is a direct result of the holiday habits of the population.

15,000 COVID-19 inoculations with only 9 reported adverse effects.  There were a few cases of "anal seepage" that did go unreported. Not to be confused with MV's "Anal Fountain" that was a symptom displayed whilst hosting an edition of "The Gabcast" upon his return from Morocco over a decade ago now.

That is all.

I just read in the local newspaper that the families of each of Canadian killed on that plane will be compensated $150,000.  There were 176 people killed, 55 of them Canadians.

"(55 Canadian citizens, 30 permanent residents and 53 more travelers bound for Canada, including many Iranian students, as well as citizens of Britain, Afghanistan, Sweden and Ukraine)"

Here is Global NEWS' take.  Apparently the $150,000 per family offer has been rejected.

I have a question. Being as mandatory masking helps so much- how come the cases continue to rise where they put laws in?

Now, they tell me (and common sense dictates) that touching your face is not good during a pandemic. However, masks force me to touch my face probably a minimum of 50 times a day. Every time somebody comes into my office, I have to mask. Every time I leave it to talk with others, the mask goes on. Every time I get back to my office, sit in a truck (by myself) or walk outside the mask comes off.

Hell, it is probably closer to an additional 100 times each day that I'm touching my face. And this is their solution to "help" me NOT get it?*

*The above is hypothetical, and would apply IF I were not presently sheltering in place in my basement.
It's your decision to improperly use the fixes your gov. is instructing you to use.

If you combine PROPER hand hygiene with proper mask application.  Everytime your hands go to your face, they must be clean.  As in just cleaned seconds prior.

Fuck the masks, if everyone would just wash their hands we'd be good.  Masks increase transmission in those who arent trained or fail to follow established mask/PPE donning and doffing.  Yes guys, after you pick your nose, you should wash your hands.

Here is 4 test shots of the AIM-9X from F-15 and F/A-18 fighter jets.  The High Off Boresight Shots(HOBS)  are part of the Sidewinder to attack from "all aspects", not just from the typical tail chase scenario.
The first Sidewinder with an "all aspect" shot capability was the AIM-9 variant "Lima" for "L".  then came the "Mike" variant which kept all of the Limas capabilities just expanded upon them.

https://youtu.be/4g4_jzqBJnA

AIM-9M-4/5 was in use for Desert Shield while AIM-9M-6/7 which was rushed to the Persian Gulf in order to deal with specific threats to be fund in the area.
AIM-9R was started by the Navy, but was cancelled in favour of both the Navy and Aiforce jointly developing the AIM-9X which came into force on November 2003.
By January 2013, the AIM-9X Block II was about halfway through its operational testing and performing better than expected.
As of June 2013, Raytheon has delivered 5,000 AIM-9X missiles to the armed services
In September 2012, Raytheon was ordered to continue developing the Sidewinder into a Block III variant, even though the Block II had not yet entered service. The USN projected that the new missile would have a 60 percent longer range, modern components to replace old ones, and an insensitive munitions warhead.

The need for the AIM-9 to have an increased range was from digital radio frequency memory (DRFM) jammers that can blind the onboard radar of an AIM-120D AMRAAM, so the Sidewinder Block III's passive imaging infrared homing guidance system was a useful alternative.  The 2016 budget killed the AIM-9X Block 3, but its insensitive explosives warhead will be retained for future Sidewinder variants.  Sound slike we need a longer alphabet though.

Agreed, and a person like that should have their innoculation performed via subungual  injection.  The rich blood supply underneath the fingernails will aid in vaccine distribution throughout the body. (UN)fortunately extensive innervation is usually involved within areas of rich blood supply.

I'm willing to go as high as 100% of people collect it in some form or another. Though I will admit that it is nice to be able to look at those collecting direct government money and to be able to judge them as inferior.

If your working, you are just putting off your collection of a pension (that you have not contributed as much to as you will be taking out.) The government gives subsidies to corporations that benefit you indirectly more than they do somebody who is "poor" and collecting welfare. Hell, even the food stamps are just a way of getting money to the shareholders and owners of big agriculture and chain supermarkets, that in turn allows your groceries to be cheaper. (And has the added benefit of increasing the value of your 401K and portfolio.)

Don't get me started on government workers making 80,000 for a 30,000 a year job. While the government has been bribed by their unions to pay them an extra $4000 per month more than the worker is worth- that worker feels free to pretend that they are superior to the welfare mom pulling in $1200 a month.

Do you live in a new neighbourhood where the government just paid tens of thousands to connect your driveway to the interstate road system, your water to the treatment plant, and your storm to the river? Yeah, some places charge the developer a small portion- but the rest usually comes from the government. Single family detached cost a lot more that Casa Senda and the usual subsidized housing.

If you don't believe that you are collecting government money in some form or another, you are a moron.
Hear hear!  Though I disagree about it being nice to be able to look at those collecting government benefits and  to be able to judge them as inferior.  Eventually, hopefully, every single one of us will get our government cheese once a month.
