Author William Peter Blatty dead.

What a striking gentleman with those deep blue eyes.   Blatty is well known as the author of The Exorcist but most don't remember that he also had a comedic flair writing the screenplays to the best Clouseau film, A Shot in The Dark and What Did You Do In The War, Daddy?, both directed by Blake Edwards.  He was a very devout Catholic and the true 1949 exorcist case out of Georgetown and St. Louis inspired the classic horror film. Incidentally, the Exorcist, IMHO, is the scariest horror film of all time. RIP, Mr. Blatty.  You will be missed.

Animals shouldn't be in circuses.

Whatever.  That is simply your opinion.  My opinion is that those animals were treated far better in the circus than they would be out in the wild.  Sure there were abuses as there is in anything humans are involved in.  That said, in general, the trainers probably cared for those animals better than they cared for members of their own families.  Very likely, the elephants and other animals probably would not be alive if there was no circus.  They were bred for that.  I'm not a huge fan of circuses as I haven't been since childhood but I hate to see the circus disband.

The true foulness of the circus is the manner in which it has promulgated untruths about animal species, such that the great mass of the populace doesn't even consider that feeding an animal that is designed to kill things on its own is an insult.

Concern over animal cruelty is a close second.

33% of tigers and lions did not have access to an outdoor enclosure
Lions spend on average 98% of their time indoors
An average enclosure for tigers is only 5 m2
Elephants are shackled in chains for 17 hours a day on average
Elephants spend on average 10 hours a day showing stereotypic behaviour
Tigers are terrified of fire but are still forced to jump through fire rings
since 1990 there have been over 123 cases of lion attacks at circuses
animals are trained through discipline.

Just think how many people think it is appropriate for themselves to be trained through discipline.

Eugene Cernan. Last man to walk on the moon. He went to the same high school as me. I was a junior when he walked on the moon. I had the chance to meet him about 8 years ago and let him know he was a large part of the inspiration for me working in the space program. RIP.
