Random Topics / Movies for 2020 Halloween
September 24, 2020, 12:35:20 PM
When October rolls around, I like to start watching movies appropriate for the season to put me in the mood for the big day at the end of the month.  Halloween is much too big for only one eve.

Here’s the start of my viewing list, to commence on 10/1, in no particular order, subject to change at any time and any bizarre whims that may strike my fashion.  Et tu?

1) Phantasm - For sure the original and maybe the entire shebang.  Special acknowledgement for Cam and his glorious taste.  Praise The Silver Orb.  Praise The Tall Man.  Praise The ‘Cuda.

2) Carnival of Souls - Hey, it’s a classic with atmosphere out the yin yang, plus Utah!

3) Forbidden Planet -  Need some Sci-Fi.  Need me some Honey West in space.

4) The Hitcher -  Rutger Hauer.  French fries.  Special acknowledgement for Azzerae for bringing-up the glorious Blade Runner in another thread and pointing me down the highway.

5)  Halloween III -  Tom Atkins, Mr. O’Herlihy, Stacy Nelkin... yum!  We all need some cheese.  Oh, and that damn song.

My first five, with additions to come.

Have at it, Gablings!

I'll just leave this here.  Don't tell me I don't love you.  :D

"Would Fluffy eat me if I dropped dead?" The answer, according to small but growing body of scientific literature, is a fairly clear yes..."

Somebody else can post it over on that other "poser" of BG, to work them into a frenzy.

Radio and Podcasts / Corsi on with Jorch - December 13th
December 09, 2018, 04:49:45 PM
I'm stunned.  Jorch doing something almost risque, at least for Jorch.  I hope it doesn't upset Ma Noory.

"In the first half, author and conspiracy theorist, Jerome Corsi will discuss being a key witness in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. Jerome will talk about what he has been going through, the plea deal related to his alleged role in communications with WikiLeaks that he refused to accept, and what he believes will be the outcome."

"They'll be coming to get you, Jorch!"

Random Topics / Overused Words
October 10, 2017, 06:36:51 PM
Is there some overlord in the ministry of truth who decides what the word of the day is for the talking head morons?  I've heard the word "palpable" used three times today.  I used to work with someone who's only positive adjective appeared to be "awesome."  Damn, has everybody become Spicoli, with a vocabulary that would embarrass a chimp?  Maybe I'll call into Jorch tonight so I can hear him say "That's true!  Let's go to Bill in West Hartford.  Billy, how are yeeewww!"

With all the usual crap in the World and being completely tired of anything political, enjoy something completely different!  If you don't like this, you must be dead.  Sorry, no Noory sound effects included. ;)

Random Topics / Why I Try to Avoid Flying
March 05, 2017, 12:33:34 PM
Well, it's certainly not much fun anymore.  From being packed in like sardines to this:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-03-03/u-s-airport-pat-downs-are-about-to-get-more-invasive

This week, I had to make a journey from the Houston area to Austin, sans car.  Rather than take Southwest, I thought I'd try Greyhound.  I hadn't used them since my freshman year in college.  Other than being in a kind of sketchy area of Houston, I was pleasantly surprised.  Walked into the terminal, got my ticket, no sweat.  Sat in the waiting area, without being strip-searched, scanned, or otherwise abused.  30 minutes later, I board on time, plenty of room.  Didn't even have to wear a seat belt or set in a waiting pattern forever, wondering how much we were going to bounce around in turbulence.  Got to Austin, on time.  No hassle, no problems, free wifi, all for $16.  Flying, you suck!

These caught my eye recently.  They're certainly cool to look at, with the exposed tubes glowing away.

Random Topics / Send In The Clowns!
September 30, 2016, 04:26:49 PM
"Social media posts stating “clown activity” in the area around Wright Brothers Middle School in Dayton caused enough concern that school security officials initiated a partial lockdown of the school and a one-call to parents of students.
Dayton Public Schools spokeswoman Jill Moberly said “verified social media posts of clown activity” lead to the decision to secure the school. She said no sightings of clowns in the area actually occurred. She would not give detail about what the social media posts stated regarding clown activity."

http://pix11.com/2016/07/08/witness-filmed-dallas-shooting-of-officers-from-hotel-window-it-looked-like-an-execution/

"Officer down:

The shooter is seen standing by a white pillar spraying bullets to the left and right, which Dejesus believes was to draw the police near.

“He was trying to get a commotion going, trying to get cops’ attention.”

When one officer attempts to engage the shooter one-on-one, he is killed by multiple shots fired at point blank range.

“It looked like an execution honestly. He stood over (the officer) after he was already down and shot him maybe three to four times in the back. It was very disturbing to watch.

“He shot without any fear. He didn’t care. (The police officer) wasn’t able to wound him at all. He came around the corner and ended up shooting the officer about half a foot away.”

"This was a tragedy. This is nothing less than a terrorist attack."

I am stunned.  :'(

Random Topics / Anesthesia
May 25, 2015, 09:58:07 AM
Like a number of folks, I've been under anesthesia for various medical procedures over the years.  Maybe it's just me, but the procedure seems to have really improved.  I've noticed two things in particular.  One, once the procedure starts, I'm there one second and completely gone the next.  I don't have any sensation of gradually going under.  It's as if an off switch for my brain was flipped and it's goodbye world.

Second, I have no sense of time, similar to what I have when I've been asleep and realize time has passed when I awake.  It seems as if I've just been transported in time from pre-op to recovery, with seemingly nothing have happened when I awake. They could have thrown me off a cliff and spent a century rebuilding me for all I know, other than my sensation is it all happened instantaneously.  Also, I've never had any dreams under anesthesia.

I'm curious what the experience of others has been.  Here's an interesting older article, touching upon some different things.

Maybe an interesting topic for Art's new show.

Random Topics / Cool and/or Funky Radio Stations
September 19, 2014, 11:24:48 AM
Since Art's left the airwaves for now,  I've been meandering around the wide, wide world of streaming radio stations.  Just by chance, I stumbled upon, of all places, a public station in northern Kentucky, just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati.  A really cool station that broadcasts a variety of alternative music.   When I want to chill, I just strap on my noise-cancelling headphones and get in the zone.   Best thing I've found recently with my pants on.   Check it out at http://wnku.org/

What is your current radio station nirvana?

Even after having heard this song numerous times, I have to think a bit when I hear the first notes to realize this song was NOT done by Asia.
