Not saying we're Norman Rockwell by any means, but it never came up -- would be about as likely as talking sex at the table.  I'm amazed at all the stories suggesting this is a thing.

I'm sure traditions run deep in your family and that is the spirit of the holidays, but there are people who enjoy discussing current affairs with the people they feel closest to. Maybe not the most appropriate time for many people, but I've never seen it actually drive anyone out. Sometimes it even causes people to rethink their position. Not always a bad thing. 

The winter holidays will soften attitudes a bit, I hope. I remember our discussions about baking on the Winter Holiday Thread last year. Did you ever try those emulsions I suggested? I've got to reorder a few for my baking needs.

The 2016 Liturgical Year is nearly done- Advent starts on the 27th! Funny that after all these years away from the church- I still remember. I know it's early, but Happy St. Lucy's Day!

But e pluribus unum is an ideal for which to strive, and not something mandated.  There are philosophies that are just incompatible.  'Slave to Allah', taken seriously, is not compatible with democratic ideals.  We do best, existing with a separation between us.  Combining these two peoples without an analysis of philosophical differences is like mixing oil and water. 

Many religions in the world have morphed with the times, though they don't like to admit it.  Islam is one of the laggards.  Many of their societies have been stuck in the past, just treading water, not moving forward.  They choose to come here and then experience culture shock.

I didn't at all mean to imply that the principle "out of many one" should be mandated by law, indeed it should be an ideal to strive for (in general I'm for less laws, not more).  It's just that it seems like less and less people are believing in that concept, instead they look out for the best interests of their particular in-group rather than the larger society (this applies to both far left SJW's and far right 1488ers) and it's a damned shame.

Sometimes, though, it's those who have been here for a long time who think of the best interests of the country as a whole and it's the newcomers who are here for financial reasons.  They make their bucks here and send it back home, to benefit their home country.  They get enough to retire and retire back where they came from.  They do all they can to maintain their old culture and do not try to assimilate.  They, or their children, take advantage of our social system's hospitality, yet they seem to feel no gratitude. 

That we see so little of our Islamic brothers posting on forums such as this, denouncing the ideals propounded by ISIS speaks a lot of how far their culture is from ours. 

Yeah, it's sad.  You can't mix oil and water.  The leaders of the West should have had enough brains to see this would be a problem.  I cannot fathom what they were thinking.  In France, Muslims complain of being poor and marginalized, yet they refuse to work under women or Jews. 

Tell me, would YOU accommodate such requests by them, and only offer them jobs that discriminate? 

I worked with a guy who claimed to be Muslim but did nothing that would imply that.  He refused to leave the religion for fear of being killed.  This was a sophisticated guy with a law degree from France and he worked in New York when I knew him.  This was maybe half a century ago. 

While recently attending a lecture on Islam I was told by the presenter that to leave the religion meant death. 

There are certainly some troubling things about Islam that must change if there is to be acceptance by the majority of Americans.  Every religion must be reinterpreted in the light of current times, more so Islam, which is not only a religion, but also a form of government.

This sounds like the debate that some are trying to start here in Canada of requiring would be immigrants to Canada to take some sort of test to show they share Canadian values.  So, first I don't want any government to define what 'Canadian values' are, and, second, in our country any new citizen has to take an oath that reads:

"I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfill my duties as a Canadian citizen."

The allegiance to her Majesty part has been defined to include things like our Constitution and 'observe the laws of Canada' is self explanatory.  For me, the Constitution and our laws are as much a definition of 'Canadian values' that I want.

I wouldn't even go that far lol.  Even if it is only symbolic, the moment I am told to pledge allegiance to an anachronism like a queen is the moment I tell her where she can stick her royal crown.
