Richard Anderson who played Steve's boss on the Six Million Dollar Man has died at 91.  Rest in peace, Oscar.

He was the baddest suit in TV history. RIP Oscar Goldman.

Sorry to hear about Richard.  One death has been missed during the last week.  Horror director Tobe Hooper has died.  He was responsible for the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as well as Salem's Lot, Poltergeist and a personal favorite of mine, Lifeforce.  He was 74.  RIP to both.

Yeah, he was kind of Spielberg's protege in the 80s. I always thought that the movies he did that Spielberg produced wound up looking like Spielberg directed movies though(e.g., Poltergeist), not that there's anything wrong with that. Bummer. He did something about invaders from Mars that was pretty good too. The title escapes me right now.

Bummer. I've always really liked them but never got the chance to see them live.
And now you never will.

SD only toured for a couple years in the mid 70s anyway as I recall.  They really weren't so much a set band as Becker/Fagen and a bunch of very talented studio musicians who came and went regularly.  Not that they didn't produce some great music, but the make up of the group made it impossible for them to tour.

No, I know they were touring recently, within the last few years anyway because I remember seeing they were coming to one of the casinos near me.  ;)

Duke is right, they toured a bit early on, then concentrated on studio and session work.  It wasn't until they got back together in the 90's that they toured again.   Again, a terrible loss.

Good stuff.

They were really smart guys who didn't want to do what other people were doing. And in the most ironic twist of all, they became staples of mainstream classic rock, and others aped their work. But nobody could write tighter lyrics than Becker.

Oh I see, you mean on the oldies circuit. I wasn't aware of that, I thought you meant in their prime.  I've learned the hard way to skip many of those bands today, they tend to be the band in question in name only.  I saw the Moody Blues a few years back, it was like an ensemble band made up of three original members and four or five other musicians who played most of the music.  They weren't bad, in fact they sounded quite good, but it wasn't the same.

One advantage to seeing these bands today is many do meet and greets after the show, posing for photographs and signing whatever you throw in front of them.  I sat and talked for thirty minutes over a beer with John Hawken after a Strawbs concert in a club outside Cleveland back several years ago.  Had a similar opportunity to talk with Carl Palmer a couple years ago, a genuinely nice man who truly appreciates his fans.

Steely Dan really was just Becker and Fagen and if you check the link I provided it shows they have dates coming up (that I'm sure will be cancelled now).

Ha. Yeah. It is funny how some bands reconfigure themselves. Recently a friend saw Journey with the Oriental singer and said he was awesome. Shut eyes and it was Steve Perry. I think I recall seeing concert of Fleetwood Mac in the 80's or early 90's where only Mick was around.
For metal music it is hilarious and interesting. There are spreadsheets online for various bands for figuring out makeup considering the feuds, addictions, "artistic differences," etc. You go see Exodus, just as an example, and need to check your crib-notes.

Even funnier when former members of a band form new bands, but use the same name as their former band.  There were two bands touring as "Asia" back ten years or so ago, and at least three bands touring as "The Sweet".

Maybe Becker will phone it in.

Ah!  The Billy Burnette era.  That didn't last long.  Billy, son of Dorsey Burnette and nephew of Johnny Burnette, was brought in to replace I think both Lindsey and Stevie.  Those were daunting shoes to fill and then came Clinton and his use of Don't Stop for his campaign theme and the Buckingham-Nicks band reunited.  Poor Billy,  I bet he is extremely talented like his progenitors were.

As for Steely Dan,  the less I say about them the better though I did like a few songs they did ( Do It Again , Reelin' In the Years and Rikki, Don't Lose That Number). I will say they were talented but their music was really not up my alley. RIP, Mr. Becker.

Don Williams has died.  He was one of my wife's favorite country singers. Always a pleasant low-key personality.  RIP.

Jerry Pournelle.

What an interesting fellow, I should look up my last correspondence with the old codger and see if I pissed him off too much.

Lord, someone and many someones do not write to ole Larry 'bout the news.

Good folk often pass in obscurity, history will let us all know if we live long enough which of the worthy were us.

All writers,  caveat emptor that, beware good editors.

Footfall.  Great read.  The Falkenberg series, great stuff.  Project Thor, a great mind is gone.

Casino and Goodfellas wouldn't have been the same without him. His book "A Guys Guide to Being a Mans Man" is hilarious and informative.

RIP Frank Vincent :(
