The "I'm watching/just watched *movie title* thread....

Started by PhantasticSanShiSan, September 26, 2008, 04:58:26 PM

Oh wow.  Here is an even more negative review of mother!  Now I'll probably watch it some time because my curiosity is getting the best of me.  I'll wait for pay-per view or redbox dvd though.

Mother, an exercise in torture porn, may be the vilest movie ever released by a major Hollywood studio.

Ordinarily when a filmmaker goes trampling all over your senses with an eye toward maximizing disgust, it’s for the purpose of producing some cheap scares. In Mother, though, the aim is a macabre pastiche of people’s most cherished and deeply held beliefs. Deliberately grotesque and nauseating, and seemingly engineered to outrage Christians, especially Catholics, Mother represents a stain on the reputation of Paramount Pictures, which once produced Going My Way. It may be the most vile and contemptible motion picture ever released by one of the major Hollywood studios.

I hated the film of TTSS, and Oldman seemed miscast to me. I don't see what gaying up one of the characters achieved either, not helped by Cumberbatch being fairly crap too. LeCarre is quite a dull writer but the TV series made it work to their advantage, with long takes of Guinness cleaning his glasses and long scenes that were fairly irrelevant yet somehow intriguing. You can still go back and watch it, even if you know who the mole is.

Right, right, but the title of this thread suggests that you watched something other than gay porn, even I could do better:

Just saw It.  Excellent horror movie.  Along with the first Conjuring flick, it is among the best horror films of this century and one of the best King adaptations maybe only surpassed by The Shining.  A great coming of age tale. It surpasses the tv version though Tim Curry did an excellent job in that adaptation. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

"It’s very simple what happened here: Paramount backed an audacious auteur’s twisted genre film and aimed to sell it to a mass audience. You could say it’s high art and that it’s proper place is in a specialty house, but then â€" would sophisticated audiences like it? It’s obvious why Paramount went wide with this movie and didn’t roll it out: They knew it would greatly divide moviegoers. Going wide was the only means to make any amount of money, especially with Lawrence as headliner. There’s no winning in a platform release, because bad word of mouth would have crept up fast. Paramount’s marketing team was passionate about the movie, worked closely with Aronofsky on crafting something cool, and they knew the best place to tee the film off was the fall festival circuits where it was greatly embraced by critics (70% certified fresh). While we’ve dinged Rotten Tomatoes continually for impacting a wide release’s ticket sales, that’s not the case here. What Mother! is an example of is the disconnect between RT and moviegoers’ habits. RT organically favors auteurs."

In other words, the unwashed masses are neither smart enough nor sophisticated enough to appreciate the "geniuses" in Hollywood.  ::)  Too bad the chosen ones of MSM can't just command the proletariat to acknowledge their greatness.  Sorry, we're not North Korea.  Yet.

Okay I took the chance and watched Mother. I freakin LOVED IT. First off got to say I am a fan of Aronofsky films (Black Swan is so creepy good, Wrestler was really great story of a has been sports/entertainer) Requiem was really messed, I thought Requiem is way more messed up than Mother.

So I braced myself reading 21st selected reviews (I should have checked his source because both were from Conservative sites) because I really was preparing for something really offensive, and pretty much the entire movie nothing remotely offensive of the nature of the criticism happened, near the end of the movie there was a pretty disturbing scene visually and I guess allegory wise, but even that we are putting our own perspective on it.

That's what I loved about it, it was so different than anything I saw. It's one of those movies that I talked with the person I went with all the way home, decoding stuff, both having slightly different perspective of certain scenes. Shortly after watching I went on movie forums about the film to see other people decoding of it. If you take the movie literally, it's absurd but if you pick up on the allegory, I think it's pretty interesting and not nearly as offensive as some of the easily outrage snowflake (sorry if it good for one side, you got to call out the other side) I am still trying to find what religious aspect was so offensive

I will not say if you dislike you are dumb or wrong, it a strange film, it certainly not mainstream and not for everybody. But I do think it's a challenging film and I had fun and enjoyed the challenge. It's a movie that stays with you for a while. There were a lot of great movie that didn't do well in the box office or was mocked and appreciated after. This is one of those films I can see getting an Oscar nom and a Razzie nom, that's how divisive it is. Then again it certainly not vanilla, which gets a thumbs up from me

Rex Reed is not a conservative movie reviewer and he's been around since 1970. He is also rather flamboyantly gay not someone I think of as a conservative.  The other review was from, yes, a conservative source. I thought Black Swan was boring and Noah stupid but to each his own.  The Wrestler was good though. Mind you, I'll probably check mother! out when it comes out on video just because I like many bizarre films. I have quite the subsection of bizarre movies in my movie collection.  Many a conservative would blush just reading some of the titles and no, I'm not talking about XXX porn.  We all have different perspectives about what is offensive.

I like my share of what some may call heretical films but I'm uncomfortable of things that I've heard about mother! I'm sick to death of the Christ-bashing coming from filmmakers. Yes, be critical of the church but don't mock the Trinity and Mary (I'm not a Catholic but I believe she should be respected). It is definitely one of the most panned dramas that I can remember in recent history and it has been panned by many mainstream critics and movie audiences. I read all sources, liberal and critical. So far Aronofsky is 1 for 3 in my book but we'll see.

I do respect your opinion though.  I'm tired of big stupid films and prefer films that are more cerebral. I'll be sure to let people know what I think when I do manage to finally see it.  Seriously, you'd probably call me a bit schizophrenic if you saw my collection.  lol

I just watched  Last Embrace with Roy Scheider.  Walken has a small role in it.   More on it tomorrow.

You are totally right, it was wrong of me to lump the two reviewers in the same category. That was unfair.

I watched IT three  Friday after the release an there was a 7pm showing and a 7:20, the 7PM was close to a sell out so I decided to go to the 7:20 and got decent seats but by the time the movie started that theater was sold old as well. It's really a juggernaut. Like most I thought it was really well done, but at times I think they rushed through each kids experience, but it's understandable in just a 2:15  film.  It's still in the top 3 in it's 5th week, that's just crazy.

I saw "Blade Runner 2049" last week, along with the original, kicking off the package.  I'm glad I got to see the original once again. I wish I could say the same about 2049.  You're right, 21st, Gosling is just not leading man material in my book.  I assume Gosling meets today's criteria with his effeminate and non-threatening appearance.  He looks flat and seems to be sleepwalking through most of the movie, even as a replicant.  For that matter, most of the cast seems to be posing as actors, either over-acting, acting awkwardly, or, damn, I don't know what they're trying to do.  The one that really takes the cake is Jared Leto.  Gads, does he suck.  What a pretentious blowhard.  Pitiful.

The movie drags along until Harrison Ford finally appears.  Ford really shows his age, whether purposeful or not, but he puts the rest of the cast to shame.  At least the guy has some cojones or can act like he does, without coming across as a laughable phony.  The one seemingly decent actress is Ana de Armas.  Ironically, she plays the hologram "love interest" of Gosling.  The hologram acted more human and was easier to empathise with than the rest of characters.

Sorry, I'd never classify "2049" anywhere near the original.  By today's laughable standards, it's passable, with some interesting scenes, but it's somewhat of a slow-motion mess, overall.  No one approached Rutger Hauer's performance, hell, no one even approached William Sanderson's qualities.  The best part for me?  Gosling dies shortly before the end of the movie, before the first pile of dirt is mercifully thrown on this disappointing miscarriage.

I'm watching/reading about the whole Harvey Weinstein stuff. It is fun to see the left turn on each other and also how people change their stories and position on issues. And to see Hollywood, the source of so much ilk and political propaganda, in chaos. I hope it continues and lawsuits aplenty. Maybe they will get back to acting and not CGI? Or new ideas instead of making bad newer versions of old movies or, worse, old tv shows into movies? Also interesting that all these famous actresses are coming out saying they all were "harassed" but none actually did the "casting couch?"

I wonder if Jorch was ever on someone's "casting couch?"  Maybe that explains his C2C "success."  They'd have to be pretty sick but that seems to be the norm for Hollyweird.

Apparently, the NYPD was trying to nail Weinstein on some criminal counts.  Sting, no not the singer, audio included.

Makes you wonder how much influence Tony had on his brother. Tony never got much credit as a serious film-maker, but he was the alpha-male that encouraged his brother to not be such a pussy.

Shudder. I think Norry got his job because it is late night and there, at least until the internet, isn't much competition on the radio and his bosses are likely too busy doing lines, hemorrhaging cash, and hanging out in mist tunnel and music festivals ducking phone calls from investors and board of directors.

Weinstein and Hollyweird is getting even weirder:

I have to smirk, at least a little, at the supposed shock and outrage from the Hollyweird and political crowd.  As much as the PC crowd and leftist continue to push all sorts of minutiae for proper human behavior, while they themselves laugh and belittle mainstream conservative traditions, boys will still be boys.  It's not as if the term "casting couch" was just invented.  I'll bet Willie and The Donald would have made quite the pair on the town, in their heyday.  I'm not sure who the wing man would have been.

Thanks for the review!  It pretty much confirms what I suspected.  Hollywood needs to get some better leading men because many in the current batch are not that masculine.  I like Jeremy Renner and 1 or 2 others but that is about it.

Watched Wind River last week , alas another Harvey Weinstein production but this was very good.  Good performances by Renner, Graham Greene and Gil Birmingham but a rather brutal film.  Elizabeth Olsen was the leading lady and she doesn't do much for me but I guess she's ok.  She's definitely miscast as The Scarlet Witch in The Avengers films.  Anyway Wind River is all about the murder of a young Arapaho woman and the ensuing coverup by the murderers.  Renner plays a tracker who helps Greene and Olsen find the culprits. I give it a solid 4 stars.  Beautiful photography of the Wind River reservation in Wyoming.

You are all going to hate more (well more than you already do  :-X ) but I went tonight and ..... I liked it *ducks tomatoes*

Okay I will say it up front it not an action film, there a fight scene in the beginning and end and maybe one or two in the middle but it certainly didn't feel like an action movie

For me it felt more like a suspense/ connect the dots tight film. I watched it in 3D and I thought the scenery was beautiful, I also thought it stayed true to the original. I got a bit confused at the end (I haven't watched the original in a while) but I liked it. Even though it was a VERY long movie, it went a good 2:45. If you take into account previews and end credits you can be in there for 3 hours.

The person I went with had to go to the bathroom at the end, the last major scene didn't help lol  ;D

Watched Dunkirk last night at the $1 movie theater.  Pretty good save for a few problems.  First off, it drops you into the movie with very little said about what is going on.  Kind of like starting a film in medias res.  I would have appreciated a better narrative structure.  The music by Hans Zimmer was overbearing at times with long, loud dissonant notes drowning out the dialog at times.  However, by the time the movie was over, I pretty much understood what went on. It is not a film for lazy viewers.  You actually need to think a little bit while watching it.  All of the actors were fine and the airplane dogfights were pretty good but don't surpass Howard Hughes, Howard Hawks or William Wellman's work in the 20's and early 30's. I'll give it a 3.5 which is solid enough but I think someone else could have done a better job with the material.

I think that was the whole point of the film - to just present events as they are happening and to make no judgement about the characters' actions or motivations. It doesn't matter too much about the wider context of the story in WW2 either, as it is just following these handful of characters at one chaotic moment and location in time.

My wife knows 2 people that saw it and they felt like they had wasted 2 hours of their life.  She thought it was better than what they said.  I'd have to agree with her. We thought it was a pretty good film but not great.

I thought better. The score was awesome and added to the effect of being sort of, thought, helpless situation and used the Shepard Effect, I later learned by the interwebs, because I was wondering how it worked. Seemed to increase but never peaked. The tension and chaos helped by the auditory illusion. Also being "thrown in" to the mess and the discordant story line was good, we all know (or should if you even had basic history) the story so this showed more of the chaos at the time and from different perspectives at the same, sorta, time.

Nice going, Hollyweird.  Are you getting the message yet?  You suck.

"Almost nothing is “working,” and the studios can’t afford to waste any more money hoping things will turn around. They’re pulling flops from theaters earlier than usual.

This weekend, for example, Warner Bros. is putting out a white flag on “Blade Runner” after three tough weeks. They’ve cut the number of theaters showing Denis Villeneuve’s beautiful film by 855. So far, “Blade Runner” has made just $66 million.  Audiences have not clamored to it. And now, week by week, Warners will quietly take it away.

Warner’s isn’t alone. Universal is pulling Tom Cruise’s  “American Made” from 539 locations after a month in release. The Doug Liman directed thriller has made just $43 million. Good reviews haven’t helped push Cruise fans to theaters. One problem was lack of promotion since Cruise wasn’t available. Also, audiences may have just soured on him after “The Mummy” and other flops. With both studios, it wasn’t for lack of trying."
