Sad indeed.  Having a bridge that new collapse means either a design or construction problem.  Considering ground structures like that are designed with a structural margin of safety of at least 2:1, I'd say it was either defective material or improperly constructed.

Sad indeed.  Having a bridge that new collapse means either a design or construction problem.  Considering ground structures like that are designed with a structural margin of safety of at least 2:1, I'd say it was either defective material or improperly constructed.

This details the construction a little bit. The renderings show a cable stayed support structure that hadn't been constructed yet. I have to wonder if this structure was lacking support, unless the cable stayed part on that part of the span was for aesthetics.

I feel for the families of those killed, but I also feel for the designers and fabricators. The rest of their careers are going to be spent in court rooms.

So it was still under construction.  The BBC article Pye posted initially didn't make that clear, the article made it sound like it was completed and operational.  Do you think they would put non-load bearing cables on the bridge for aesthetics?  Seems like a waste of money.

I don't have any. This just happened. I was speculating obviously but given how many tragedies they've been involved in lately I'd say it's an educated guess.
