I do have a distant cousin born during the occupation whose father was a German soldier, everyone in town knows who she is.  She lives a terrible life, her mother was shorn and paraded through town on a dung-cart and didn't last long the poor creature, and the child was for years called kaalraate ("cabbage rot") and pelted with buttons every time she went to town to shop and, when she went to the konditorei for a piece of marzipan-kake the baker would cut a ragged piece out of the middle squash it with a spatula and put his great greasy thumb in the frosting.  She's in her eighties now and still flinches thinking it's a button whizzing past her ear.

Is it okay if a drop a cabbage rot here and there?  I'd kind of like to procure it for special occasions - it has panache.

My understanding is that Rumspringa is a period of time where the rules are relaxed for young Amish and they are allowed to experience the outside world. After partying down they can choose to remain Amish or leave. Almost all stay - leaving means no family, friends or community with no money and an 8th grade education.
