Fucking hell. That's some serious shit.  :(

I think if I lived in Florida, I'd seriously be packing for a vacation right now.  This is why I don't want to live in Florida.  They have had a nice sabbatical from hurricanes for the last ten years but it looks like things are getting back to normal.

Yep, I would have already headed-out.  I learned long ago, you don't want to wait for government evacuations orders, way before the Rita end-of-the-world-traffic-jam-from-hell.  Government officials are looking at it from the perspective of millions of people.  They're not looking out for your particular ass.

"Gov. Rick Scott on Monday declared an emergency in all of Florida's 67 counties as the projected path for Hurricane Irma moved south and took aim at the Caribbean and perhaps Miami."

Sustained winds of 180mph gusting now to to 220mph.  Still moving due West at 14mph. Now about 230miles ESE of Barbuda. The island of Barbuda has a population o 1,168 people as per a 2011 census poll. Its highest elevation is 38 meters or 125 feet.
Amazing wind velocities, but compared to tornados, not as quick..
The current velocities would be an EF-3 tornado wind speeds of 186-206mph.  EF-4 is 207-260mph or 93--116 meters per second, and the ultimate in natural wind velocities, the EF-5 tornado with wind speeds of 261-316mph or 116-142 meters per second.
Of course the water and storm surges that accompany hurricanes/typhoons combines with the sheer scale is overwhelming.  Tornados are an almost out of nowhere event, whereas hurricanes are tracked with advanced warning measured in days, with tornados used to be measured in seconds, now minutes.  We had seconds to get to shelter, that's the part that stays with me was the sudden appearance of the twister, I'm much more comfortable outside where I can see any on coming events than inside where I cant visualize any approaching storms.

When I redid the roof of the house 3 years ago, I had to replace some "Hurricane clips".  When Dad built the house back in 1971 these clips are installed in between each sheet of plywood that is laid on the roof.   It ties each sheet of plywood to the surrounding pieces.

I'm sure they helped to keep the roof in place when we were hit by the tornados of 1979.  There were multiple funnels with one jumping over our house.  Highest rating was an F-4 for 207-260mph
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1979_Woodstock,_Ontario,_tornado

My Mom and I were watching the corn in our yard blowing over from the wind. I said that We should stake up the corn so doesn't get wrecked. Well when we heard the roaring, Mom, my Bro and I headed down to the cellar. I have witnessed other tornadoes in the distance and always get the same "chilling" feeling.

There's no right answer. If the officials warn people to get out, they're scare mongering. If they don't they're hiding stuff. If they tell people to leave a week in advance, its panicking..if they leave it until three days before it isn't enough time for people to react.  :-\

Interesting.  Thursday seems to be an important milestone of this event.

Stay safe everyone.  A Gravity Sucks mentioned, if you are evacuating with pets, make sure to bring a leash.

Exactly.  To be forewarned is to be forearmed.  I was skeptical the storm would continue west as that has not been happening much in the last number of years.   There is little chance now that the storm will take a turn north and miss the US completely.

The cone of spaghetti tells you nothing.

Sure it does.  The different  "noodles" each represent a weather model and past trends are taken into account.  Most of the models say the hurricane is headed straight for Florida and I don't think you can find a forecaster that disagrees with them.  It could still take a turn before it reaches Florida and if that happens it will make a landfall in the Carolinas.  That seems less and less likely now though.

That's why I don't rely upon government officials.  The only one responsible for my ass is the dude I see in my mirror.

It's the only thing less accurate than pre-election polls. Hell they probably have a model of it hitting CA.

Yup, damned if you do, damned if you don't.
It must be chaos for those who are employed by others.  Hopefully employers are cognizant of people wanting to evacuate early. But of course like anything else, some workers simply looking for a few days off will "evacuate" their position of employment at the mere possibility of a storm.

There were 38 NASA Exceptional Bravery Medal awarded for the NASA and Lockheed employees at the Michoud Assembly Facility in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The MAF has 43 acres or 1,870,000 square feel of building space that is climate controlled all under a single roof. The Space Shuttle External Tanks were built there and in fact there was a roof at the MAF that collapsed thus damaging External Tank(ET)-122.  That tank was repaired and ultimately flew on the STS's(Space Transportation System) penultimate mission which was STS-134 which was flown by Orbiter Vehicle(OV-) 105-Endeavour.

these 38 workers stayed behind at the MAF in order to man the vast pumping systems. During their stay they managed to pump out over 1,000,000,000-1 billion gallons of water, most likely the reason why damage was so light at the MAF.
Due to these 38 employees not a single Space Shuttle mission was delayed cancelled because of delays related to the MAF.  The NASA Exceptional Bravery Medal is NASAs highest bravery award.  The MAF is now being used for building the Core Stage for the new Space Launch System(SLS).  SLS will use 4 RS-25 engines(used to be called RS-25D or Space Shuttle Main Engines-SSME0 on the core stage from the launch pad until they are shut down at Main Engine Cut Off and the core stage and the 4 RS25 engines will burn during re-entry and land in the ocean.
In 2018 the newly lengthened Pegasus barge(which used to be used for transporting the Shuttle ETs fo KSC for launch) will transport the core stage with its 4 RS25(Shuttle) engines and be lifted onto the B-2 test stand.  There all 4 engines will be lit and a "Green Run" will be performed.  This is similar to the testing that was done with the Saturn V 1st stage when it fired all 5 of its F-1 engines at the same time.  After the core stages green run, it will be loaded aboard the Pegasus barge and then transported to KSC for stacking. And eventual launch.

With over 9,200,000 lbs of thrust at liftoff, the SLS will be the most powerful rocket to have ever been launched. And that's the Block-1 version designed to carry 105 metric tons to Low Earth Orbit. The 2nd iteration of SLS will feature an upper stage with some more engines, thus raising its carrying capacity up to 130 metric tons.

A friend of mine just phoned me from a long line to buy gas near Tampa. She had just come from WalMart where shelves were already emptying.

I hope and pray, Irma makes a sharp bankshot to the E.N.E.  If you're able to, let her know she can stay at your place as an option in an emergency.  If you can't, then pray, visualize, meditate, or whatever you do for everyone in harm's way.   Thank you, Lt. Uhura. :-*

I think I would call it a category 6 if the winds went above 200 mph.  I'd also call it doom for any island in its way.

Only 3 true Cat. 5's have hit the US...1938 Labor Day, Camille and Andrew. The deadliest was the Cat. 4, 1900 Galveston Hurricane that killed 8,000-12,000...a time before weather forecasting.

IRMAGEDDON! :o

I get irritated by headlines like "Irma is the Atlantic's strongest hurricane ever!"  How long have they been measuring windspeed in the Atlantic? 50, 60 years?  Sure, probably going back to 1900 for those that actually hit the US but those out in the middle of the Atlantic.  Please just ignore those headlines.  That is a pet peeve of mine.

They also scream about it being a large hurricane when it is rather compact.

The weather like everything else has been politicized. When ice levels in the arctic increase or we have a huge winter, we're told to ignore it. That climate is something that's measured over decades. Every time there's a heatwave, or a hurricane, and we experience warm weather we've recorded dozens of times over a few centuries, were told it's global warming. A 1000 year flood yada yada. And of course the only cure is socialism and big government.

It is a sore point with me.  I also scoff at movies that break box-office records.  It is not how much money a movie makes but how many tickets does it sell.  if you have to measure the box office gross of new movies and compare the numbers with old movies then please adjust the numbers  for inflation.
