In 1997, Tony Blair's 'New Labour' party won the GE by a landslide, as a direct revolt against the previous years' (since 1979) Conservative administrations. There were commentators saying seriously that they doubted the Conservatives would ever be in government again.

After GW2, the Bush/Blair debacle, and his third successive victory, Blair offloaded the party leadership onto Gordon Brown.

The 2007/08 economic collapse and the bank bailouts secured the probability the next GE wouldn't be a Labour victory; and that came to pass. And as the elecorate had longer memories than anticipated by the MP's (many who subsequently reverted to being mere Mr, Mrs and Miss after losing their seats), the Torys didn't win outright either, having to go into a very difficult marriage with the Liberal Democrats.

So, sure, the Trump is in the WH in january; but a week is a long time in politics, four years is an eternity.. eight?

The Dems screwed up in allowing the SJWs to become their public face. The Dems didn't realize that swinging the social debate towards increasingly smaller and fringe identity topics such as gender pronouns and tranny bathrooms would alienate normal people who are more interested in jobs and the economy which the Dems largely now ignore. The only statement that Hillary said about the matter that stuck in the public mind was that she wanted to put coal workers out of work.

West Virginia was a canary in the coal mine for the Democratic strategists. They missed the fact that it was a solidly blue state that went solidly red. The reason was simple, the party that formerly championed the coal miner stopped doing that and started favoring environmental concerns. That lost them WV through alienation.

But, instead of doing damage control and wondering if other states might be flippable for similar reasons, they went off the rails and alienated even more of the working class. Basically, they've lost the unions now. If that's a permanent thing, which if Trump is able to keep some factories here it will be, then the Dems are cooked as a national party until they come back out of the clouds and talk about issues normal people care about. But, so far, they're still worried about gender pronouns.
