That might be the case. I am running a Windows firewall, Avast security and Malwarebytes.

A quick check shows that the WIndows firewall is OFF and the Avast internet security firewall is ON

None of this is the problem. It's the fact that you're using a version of Windows that nothing has supported in years.

You need to go to eBay, buy a Windows 10 product key for $4, download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, use it to do a clean installation of Windows 10, and go from there.

Hell, he could run out and grab a Windows 10 machine this afternoon for probably less than $150 with a little searching. Definitely the easier option, and if he's been getting by with a machine from the Vista era, that $150 Win10 machine would probably outperform it soundly.

Or wipe his machine and install a Lunix "lite" version. Not sure it would work for Skping etc but run faster, free, better and be more a bit more secure for basic operations.

I have seen Windows 10 deals on E-bay.  Some even had 1 Terra of RAM, a 22" monitor, mouse and keyboard for under 500 bucks=and free shipping.  Unfortunately I live in the sticks and there are no computer shops around.  I don't think there is a Bestbuy or anything within 40-60 miles!  I bought this Acer with Vista back in 2014 at a yard sale for 125.00 with a moniter, didn't need to use it until 2017.
